HRC didn't immediately put Rossi into the Repsol team, but he still got the factory spec NSR 500. Honda even made the 2001 bikes according to Rossi's wishes, which is understandable since he was the best man to bid for the last 500cc title

If you were ten seconds behind the rider in first, you would restart ten seconds behind the rider in first and would have to beat them by that margin after the restart in order to finish ahead of them. Rossi won by aggregate timing (Times from the 1st part of the race + the 2nd one). It was common on deciding the red flagged race. It was abolished at the end of 2002
Aggregate timing. The race were being counted as two, before and after the red flag. Then both results were combined into one. The rule was scrapped in 2003

Because they took the times from the first race before the rain. Rossi had like a .5 second lead and back then if a race was delayed the second race would include the first races time gap between the racers... If that makes sense

Rossi won by aggregate timing (Times from the 1st part of the race + the 2nd one). It was common on deciding the red flagged race. It was abolished at the end of 2002

Aggregate timing. The race were being counted as two, before and after the red flag. Then both results were combined into one.
The rule was scrapped in 2003

It went off combined times from the red flagged race and that race back in those days
