It may be a dissapointment to you but some 'Northerners' do actually speak correct English albeit with an accent. Steph Mc G is minimally decipherable but is often grammatically wrong which should certainly not be allowed on the BBC I've heard Londoners' say:... " them what comes from Pinner" ..etc or similar - but they won't be reading the news!

Personally, I don't think BBC Breakfast pretentious, its been dumbed down to complete with the lesser serious commercial news channels and aimed at a certain segment of the viewing public, such a shame, I agree with you re concise and serious newscasters i.e Bill Turnbull, Sophie Rayworth et al. This is all part of the BBC trying to get down with 'Da Youf', Steph McGovern irritates the heck out of me, for serious news and analysis I now listen to radio 4, wise up BBC revert to doing what you used to do best, or lose out completely.
