- Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin has been getting a lot of flack for it's cringe story and overuse of CHAOS! But beneath that is a really fun game! In this preview/ review I share my thoughts on this action RPG and if you should bother with it.

When this was first announced, i was like "what the fu..." but im strangely drawn to it, its just so cringe but also so good at the same time. There have been so many triple A games recently which have just been a dissapointment, this one isn't trying to be and it's actually a breath of fresh air.
It feels original in its cringiness.
When Jack cuts off Lich mid boss intro screaminy "I DONT GIVE A F*CK WHO YOU ARE" is hands down the best moment I've seen in this game so far
It is bruhhh very funny I don't know what they were attempting for the story but I like it in a comedic way
Jack: the only FF protagonist to skip cutscenes in real time.
@@ultimamage3 the accuracy of this comment 👌 when he talks to astos for the first "time tell us about the crystals" he didn't want to hear shit else
Soyjack: Nooo this game doesn't even look like Final Fantasy!! The franchise died with Square Soft!
Chad: Haha punching chaos go brrrr!!
LOOOOL exactly!
We've got to kill chaos! xD The gear system sounds a lot like xeno one, with a lot of gear being stupidly rare, with one piece of armour only being available near the end of the game, without any other matching pieces, but it was also the highest defense gear in the game, so naturally you put it on your tank, but that game was really hard for a jrpg as well.
Yeah we do 😈
I mean lets be honest... How many games out there can be cringe and impressive at the same time??
Right!? 😂
I mean who plays a team ninja games for the story? The action and customization has me excited.
Exactly!
What?! I played every Dead or Alive because I didn't want to miss any story elements! Also, what about the story line in Ninja Gaiden when you jump from a Skyscraper and float into Paris full of werewolf lords? Remember these before you say stuff next time!
@@sreaver4306 Dead or Alive is my favorite fighting game series of all time, but he's right. Nobody (meaning very few people) care about the lore.
Stranger of Paradise is the perfect Souls but not too hard challenge I enjoy, but its definitely not about story quality here. Lol
@@ComboDamageTV Oh yeah. I was definitely being sarcastic on this one. Their gameplay always seems to compensate for the lack of story or cheese though, so I keep buying them!
Why everyone keep say "poogalist"? 🤔 pew-ja-list is how it's pronounced. This game is super fun IMO. So many aspects to the battle system. I don't care much for critic reviews either way.
I've been Playing the Demo in the Past Few Days and Really liked it. Nioh like combat with the Job system is really Fun. Jack is definitely the most "interesting" protaganist ive seen😂. The Story is actually a Really Good take on the FF1 lore and has me invested on figuring out why chaos happened
Right I’m buying this game because of your opinions on the game I really liked what I saw here and most other people just diss the game but for me this is perfect Eldon rings is not for me i just don’t have the patience for it lol but this I can play and enjoy 😉 thank you for the great video and making me change my mind I would have never played this game
Happy to help! I hope you enjoy 😄
@@TheGamingShelf thanks will be making a video with a mention of your epic channel
It's made by the people who made nioh. That's enough for me
Considering Nier exists (Square Enix x Platinum Games) I'm glad to wait for the next mainline FF game 🎮
This is one CHAOS filled review. But I enjoy CHAOS even if he dose not pay his share of the RENT.
I know plenty of people say it is bad. I just don't know what Final Fantasy is anymore.
If you don’t think of it as a final fantasy game it’s easier to want to play.
Jack "Cringe but free" Garland is my MC
For real thoe Stranger of Paradise for me feels like a middle ground between GoW PS4 and Nioh
Its a souls style camera and button layout for the most part but gameplay revloves more around abilities and combo finishers and typical souls gameplay
Great comparison honestly! Combat is shockingly good compared to have bad the story is.

For sure! Looking forward to trying it out.
Playing it single player and it plays fine. Definitely better if you have friends, but AI get the job done, as long as you're not expecting support spells or abilities.
A lot of reviews took the story too seriously
Agreed! You have to know going in it was going to be dumb.
In a night of drinks, final fantasy, bloodborne, nioh, vagrant story had an orgy and this video game was born!!
Haha I love that! 🤣

I m surprise this guy didn’t compare it to team ninja nioh games but I mguessing he never play those amazing games, the voice acting isn’t as sily when using the Japanese voices like I always do and prefer but the dialogue is still silly and they still say chaos alot
I played the demos for both of those games but not enough to really have an opinion.
I can't wait to try the poogilist class, j/k

NME 2/10 Review didnt even finish the game. Said Garland was the only good boss and the rest were trash. A garbage review which is why metacritic is a joke. Even a pc reviewer exposed his review and laughed at him on Stream.
Stranger of paradise is a fun time. Sit back laugh and chill with its combat which is deep.
Exactly! Also, what’s NME?
I'll give this game a look because I find reimaginings interesting and it's made by Team Ninja even if my main experience with the latter is Ninja Gaiden, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Metroid Other M.
It is nice to know those guys still can't write stories. It's almost endearing like how Capcom and their action games try and fail to tell a compelling story.
Thank God the games are still fun!
@@TheGamingShelf
Yeah, but apart of me wishes they learned from John Carmack when designing the original Doom when it comes to, "gameplay first, story second".
@@civilwarfare101 Honestly, I think gamers care way too much about story that they forget that what makes gaming unique is that you are living your own story through the gameplay and it's mechanics.
Even in DOOM, there is a story being told, not just the ones that pop up in texts and cutscenes, but the story of the player going through these locations and worlds rife with demons and slaying them one by one.
But then you have games like FF XVI, games that focus SOOO MUCH on the story that they forget they are a video game, especially since in the case of XVI, the game is mostly just cutscenes and dialogue and the combat is FAR LESS satisfying and challenging than Stranger of Paradise.
There are even people saying XVI has more depth in it's combat system than SoP when XVI has practically no RPG elements, not even status ailments or elemental weaknesses (In a game centered around elements, no less). SoP has all that, plus more.
@@TheCyclicGamer
I haven't played FF16 but I do agree that gamers give way too much of a shit about story. The big problem with 95% of all story driven games is that gameplay is just means to an end. The best parts are the story bits and the gameplay is just filler to get to the story.
I bought it for the story, but kept playing for the gameplay and variety thereof.
Sounds like a game I'd try during black Friday when it's going for $20-$30.
To me it's the best modern FF game and unlike Nioh, it's story, level designs (Mostly), and pacing is a lot better, Nioh was barely understandable compared to this and got way out of hand after the first two missions, I just think a lot of people went into SOP for the narrative and not the gameplay when the latter was the core of the experience and not necessarily the former.
Even then, the cringe and dumbness of the game isn't a bug, it's a feature, and storywise a lot of the criticisms I see regarding it's story are attributed to the lack of knowledge of FF1's world, story, and lore. I mean people think Nomura wrote this story (he didn't, Nojima did) and put a lot of his "Kindgom Hearts bullshit" into it when in reality, Kingdom Hearts got most of it's bullshit from Final Fantasy since FF1 was a light vs darkness story involving time travel. If SOP were set in the world of FF7 or FF10 where these themes weren't prevalent at all, then I'd be shaking my head with those people but it isn't.
That being said, SOP is a game that has a lot of heart and soul put into it, and Jack is very refreshing for a FF protag as we had been stuck in the 15-year old femboy rut for too long.
Jack is no nonsense! I love it too! xD
Thanks for the review. I was on the fence with this one after the first demo and will try the second one this weekend. Either way will probably pick this up (maybe on sales)

When you did the comparison with the ps3 game, apart from the skin and details of Jack, it was the same
Using My Way by Frank Sinatra as the ending song is perfect for this game. I really loved the story, unironically. Breaking the chains of fate and becoming a monster to save the world was really good. I really bonded with Jack and company that by the end I felt bad for them. I platinumed the game because I enjoyed it so much.
It’s basically FF for the football team?
HAHA that’s the PERFECT way to describe it 🤣
I'm feeling so so about this. Playing elden ring myself so pretty much get that I'm tarnished in a battle royale.
Been deciding between this and ghost wire for my first ps5 game. The yokai lore interest me more so I think I'll go with that. Might pick this up during a sale.

Perfect! Thanks for your seal of approval 🙏
I'm only grateful that, as a society, we seem to be moving away from "I could care less" to the proper (and logical) "I couldn't care less."
The improper use of whenever to describe a singular event baffles me as an English major, and I unfortunately reflexively correct it every time I hear it.
Was this reviewed on PS4 or PS5? The criticism regarding the graphics might be from the PS4 version. Also, that broad sword is crazy fast! Why use a knife when you can swing that sucker almost as fast?
I played on PS5. And yes it is fast! Very welcomed surprise.
I am playing on Series X and it doesn't look bad, but you can tell it is running on the old Nioh engine from PS4 even in 4K with HDR. In fact, I would argue this game basically is Nioh with a lot of combat tweaks and it is wearing FF skins and music.

SPOILERS!!!!! WARNING ABOUT WHAT ENDGAME COULD HAVE BEEN!!!
SPOILERS!!!!! If anyone reads please just know I had to post this somewhere I came up with most of this at work today... i was bored :P
So the end you find out you are Garland the main antagonist of FF1 and it was pretty obvious but as well as who the 4 bosses at the crystals were especailly when you meet one due to you beating one of the bosses.
I THINK the endgame should of been slightly different though. Instead of this weird ending they had where you now just replay missions... because... i dunno
they could of made it so you're playing through Chaos Difficulty of passed missions with the help of a Crystal that Jack took from the Lumerians before he left. It's how even though the world you're now in is reset your group is still able to go to these places and replay your memories of them but in this amped up difficulty and the reason is to make you all stronger to prepare for the true warriors of light that will come many years down the line.
The Season Pass (if anything like Nioh) could have three parts
Part 1 - Due to their increased power the team need stronger enemies and the Crystal Jack took takes them to Chaos corrupted memories of their passed lives before the "main timeline" there you maybe helped Bikke more in one of those lives so you have missions on new coastline maps with more water based enemies. This is also the part of the expansion where we start to see small changes to the cast, Ash becomes a bit more ashen but is still just as strong if not stronger, Sophia starts growing scales and her hands look a little like claws etc
You unlock an Ash and Sophia only class that are based around what they become, for Jack you unlock the Blue Mage; Takes more uses of monster abilities and makes them stronger also has an ability like Theif where he can take them off a monster before it uses it.
You also pick up the first rendition of the Garland Armor that looks similar to the Chaos Armor Neon had
Part 2 - The team need to push themselves even harder if they're to push themselves even further, we now have Chaos rifts that we have to close to keep Cornelia safe and growing these take place in places we have been but add many new monsters to places they weren't before things like Chimera and Iron Giants are now normal enemies instead of bosses.
We get an upgraded suit of armour for Jack but it's still not like the one we see in the cutscene (similar to DLC btw this armour can't be destroyed but it greatly increses the Cyclic class)
This time Jed and Neon become more like their future selves (this is why for the most part we can't see them properly after we beat the bosses) and the two classes unlock for them.
Mechanist job class is unlocked similar to the FFXIV job it's about shooting enemies and using turrets, we know there is high tech stuff left in the world of cornellia so this isn't that hard to imagine.
Part 3 - 20 more levels are added to the Cyclic job along with the full Garland Armour and the Sword ( Slightly different one than the DLC one we get)
It's time for the 4 companions to go to their crystals so you choose which to go to first and two missions similar as before take place the journey to it but it's obviously not the same, rifts abound this time and which ever you leave for last will be just you and whoevers crystal is left as you actually leave them there (story mission wise you get them back for replaying other missions and on multiplayer) ie. you leave the wind crystal for last then it's just you and Sophia. Also added for end game is a Chaos Tower (Or this could be added in part 1 or 2 )
you go up the levels testing your strength against Chaos better armour the higher you go but if you fail you go back down to the nearest 10th level OR take on Infernal Tower it's full on you die you go right back down.
Don't understand your idea of DLC tho
Nice video, glad you liked it. I know your footage is probably early game. But the biggest hint I can give is: parry. Parry more. Dodging is fine, so is blocking. If you go off on Souls-like games it's what you will do most of the time. But parrying is better as it gives you MP in exchange of your Break Gauge.
Personally, 3/4 into the game, and honestly loving it. It's fun, engaging, level design is a little simple but it's fun. Also while the story isn't amazing, it does enough to be interesting that you want to know where it's going. The bits of lore and story you find scattered around is great and adds to the intrigue. Characters are simple and not the deepest, but their party banter is fun, and you feel like you are with friends. No where near as good as FFXV or VII Remake, but servicable.
Also, people call it Soulslike, but it's more Nioh (there is a difference). Also, this IS an Anniversary game. And it feels like it. A good deal of throwbacks to the series' history, and the callbacks to FF1 is amazing.
Definitely! I lost my footage with the first Chaos fight, but I parried a lot just to survive. Plus you get to steal enemy attacks which is so cool.
@@TheGamingShelf I made the mistake of only parrying moves you could absorb from. Until I fought Tiamat and got my ass beat. That was the boss that taught me how to use parry and the game got a lot better for me then (and it was already good before then).
Reminds me of sekiro if you lose your posture you’re dead

I love the bullshit comparisons people come up with until they play the game and then suddenly they stfu and try to act like they liked it the while time.
For me the story is meh at best but the combat is a blast and all the jobs are a great replay value engine. Also gear grinding for those loot jockeys.
I still hate that zombie dragon on chaos difficulty. Fug thar lol

Im not big on souls like games but this one i really enjoyed. Its also much more forgiving than other games in its genre
Easy mode and casual mode for the win!!

I can't believe they dont have a glamour system
That would be nice!
I really liked your review and i'm glad to find an honest view of this game, but I chuckled when you compared it to FFXIII, since it's one of the few PS3 titles that actually hold up AND look better than Origins
It’s fun
I like that they use Item levels instead of normal leveling but I wish they would have a button to check which when you have max items (500) it would automatically dismantle half of it to be set to (250). I didn't like dismantling after every mission run. Also, I wish they had an overworld or a hub you could walk around to each mission and might have mini-games and other extra content.
Respectfully the game looks trash and I love final fantasy
If you squint and pretend it’s not a final fantasy game it’s much more tolerable. But if you just skip it too I totally understand 😆

Gameplay is fun, but damn do I feel ripped off by paying full price for it.
Why is that?
@@TheGamingShelf It seems very.. shallow? Like there is little variety in enemies, the item progression system is really grindy for no reason. There is no real challenge either in higher difficulties, besides that everything just hits way harder with the benefit being just slightly increased loot tables. Like.. I can definitely recommend it as a fun coop rump, which I felt like should've been a way bigger selling point for this game. But overall quality in just things like level design, enemy variety and how phoned in side content is. I feel like this should've been priced like an AA title. Like don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good trashy action RPG and this game feels closer to a Dynasty Warriors than a Nioh 3. Not in scope but in terms of overall vibe I guess? I would feel much more comfortable recommending this, and getting people to play with with me, if it went for 30-40 bucks. I hope this goes on sale, finds and audience and gets more content though, cause I liked it. But I didn't like spending 60 bucks for it.
Just incredible how good Nioh 2 actualy is

One correction. You do drop something when u die but only on Hard mode. (Almost missed it tucked into one of the many tutorials). And what u drop is i think max mana? its weird and not really that punishing but a correction none the less. Also i respectfully disagree on the music point (I realize it comes down to taste) but the World map theme is SO good i have had it stuck in my head for awhile and i find myself sitting on the world map for a bit between missions just vibeing too it (Its also a super chill track). Also the first stage chaos shrine had some banger moments too it (Also a couple of the FF track remixes were quite nice)
Oh interesting! I didn’t know that.
@@TheGamingShelf Yeah the game had so many pop up tutorials i nearly missed it. It was in one of the ones that covered difficulty i think. (Might have been after 1st death on hard mode)
Still have to finish the demo. Haven't quite got used to the combat, but it's still pretty fun. On PS4 the game doesn't always render very well.

@@nunyabusiness69 bullshit
Good question 🤔
Jack Garland aka Chaos himself.
I love the combat on hard mode in this game. It’s actually really challenging, which is not surprising since this is the team that made Nioh 1 & 2, and has a good level of depth, with some weapons even having minor input commands.
That being said, they use A LOT of environment assets and animations from Nioh, which is mad lazy, imo. Also, while the graphics are definitely not PS3, they’re definitely early ps4, which if you look at 2017s Nioh, it has some of the same looking caves.
Horrible FPS and performance on last gen Xbox too. Wouldn’t recommend on last gen at all.
The story seems pretty bad so far, and I don’t find it too funny, just disappointing. Dialogue is…very anime, and the music is horrendous. Terrible attempts at trying to mix up ff1 themes with, w.e the hell genre they threw together.

@@lupefiasco653 You sound mad stupid rn. Nioh 2 reused tons of bosses from past games, hell my bad this game doesn’t reuse animations from Nioh 2. Nah, instead it uses animations from Nioh 1.
Hell, elden ring improved immensely in terms of graphics, and new mechanics in combat, meanwhile here’s strangers of paradise using caves from Nioh 1 and combat that actually regressed from Nioh. Try as hard as you might, there’s no defending this flop.
I have never understood this argument at least when it comes to reusing Assets (Some animations i perhaps might differ on). I mean who stares at some random Barrel or something long enough to even realize its from a previous game? I know i dont. I didnt even notice the reused stuff at all (Even wtih the animations although it been awhile since i played Nioh/Nioh2). And ultimately if it helps the game come out quicker who cares. Also its a common tactic in game dev to do such things, i mean why make a new "Barrel" when you have already made one its just a waste of time/$$$. Like would someone literally sit there and be like "Hmm, this barrel feels like a Nioh Barrel not a FF one" just seems dumb to me (Also the example of Barrel is random i just picked some random item). Unless the asset is like out of place like "Why is there a sci fi PC here in this Medieval world" then i just wouldnt notice.

I played the demo for over an hour. I did not like the combat of the game. I know I might be in the minority here, but it just felt too fast and sloppy. I am playing Elden Ring currently and do feel that is a masterpiece. It's hard not to compare the two.
Elden Ring is probably a better game no doubt.
Personally I'm not a huge fan of Elden ring combat it always feels so slow I prefer something more faster pace and combo orientated.
I wanna fully support this game because i want SquareEnix to let the FF franchise be expanded more and let other companies give a try with the franchise.

It's not like a cared about the game anyways. I just gave it a chance and the demo crashed. I'll go back to play Final Fantasy 1 for gba and nes. While I play FFXV Comrades multiple
I would buy it but on PS5 it runs very poorly in my opinion. Many fps drops and no 60fps on 4k with pretty meh graphics and lightning in many locations is straight awful, maybe it is a demo thing but I won't risk buying the game:p. Returnal looks waaay better and runs on solid 60fps in 4k no problem at all. I was very surprised when you said solid 60 fps because even with hdr off and on performance mode it has some fps drops below 60. Not to mention that on performance mode it looks like horse shit.
Meh game... Combat is also meh.
I’m super struggling with the combat in this game. I didn’t hit a single wall across 100+ hours of elden ring but basic enemies in this are crushing me.
Finding it super hard to read enemy attacks and work out when to block/soul block. Kinda finding it super frustrating ? Would love tips

I agree with the vid but to add to game's cons, the dungeon layouts are awful. Everything in each of them look too samey, very easy to get lost. No full map or mini map at least either. Plus they'll have narrow pathways fighting. So 3 members fighting 3-4 enemies in one its a clusterfuck being able to see whats happening especially as the camera zooms being knocked against a wall.
This game takes various places from main title FF games as dungeons. Cavern of Earth is from FF12 with the slow moving demon wall bosses. There the dungeon has wide as hell pathways which arent needed for FF12 stand in place combat but Stranger Paradise version of the dungeon its the opposite being dodgey action focused combat.
True. Dungeon layout isn’t great and a map of any kind would have been nice.
@@TheGamingShelf coming from Elden Ring absolutely superb layout dungeon designs its even more noticable
