I remember this moment as being "historical"! The voice Marlon Brandon gave to Sacheen that night, "spoke volumes" & she did it "elegantly", "bravely" & "matter of factly"! What a beautiful woman!

Le Lee I agree. I think the Oscar award represented to Marlon Brando a bribe to shut up about the unethical treatment the American aborigines were receiving in the movie and television industry. So he rightfully rejected it.

Hi. I'm a white european from Ireland. That said, your comment mirrors that of so many of my county men and women. We were once a proud Celtic race. We built massive stone calenders before Egypt and in the dark ages we were a becon of light for scholars to retreat to. Then we were colonised by England, stripped of our land, language, culture and education. We suffered a holocaust now refered to as 'The Great Hunger'. So many of my ancestors left this hell to seek a better life in what was your ancestors land for which I humbly apoligise. We fought many rebellions over hundreds of years all ending in failure until we gained independence in the early 20th century. Though my ancestors struggles I see many parralels with the natives of the Americas, particulary the Sioux and the Chocdaw. The Irish or Western Celts have lost their ancient languages and all but lost our national language. We have ben assimulated into the Capitalistic Europe idology and given up our identity for western convienence. Keep sacred what you have from the past and pass your culture onto your children. Stand proud for you have a richer heritage and culture than those who belittled you.

The greatest victory is over oneself, for even for the spiritually enlightened ones who know of the Wheel of Reincarnation, to give one's life for one's country and culture is a great sacrifice, and against such long odds and superior firepower. Yet, these people oft knew that they aligned with Natural and Spiritual laws, and therefore stood on good, solid, moral ground, and so were prepared to give their all for the cause of the Great Spirit, for nature anf their culture.
Thus, the native's were victors over a ruthless, merciless white man, who brought the ways of the coward and coyote upon our Lakota lands and people, by fighting like women, and thus mutilating women, and defenceless children, along with massacring the huge herds of our food source, the buffalo. So the white man never won, but cheated on every level, through treaties that he wrote so as to break, with superior arms, killing women and children, then sending these to boarding schools, for he feared an uprising from the young, as cowards do.
Now, the spirit of Lakota not only lives on, but rises again like the Great Eagle that majestically soars on the high prairie winds, with its ever alert eyes watching over our people, as does the Greqat Spirit, for now the prophecies will unfurl against the white man and his ways, for he hath made s sty out of this earth, rather than a Temple of God, and so he must pay, for waht hath been sown, must be reaped!
And for those who valiantly and courageously gave their lives to protect the ways of the spirit, and Mother Nature, a blessed time comes to you once more, just as your lands will be given back to you to make into a Temple, so the Great Spirit can smile once again when he looks down upon His Lakota children, and blesses them for upholding His ways, amidst the direst and darkest hours.

"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before; I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our Chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Ta Hool Hool Shute is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." Chief Joseph - Thunder Traveling to the Loftier Mountain Heights - 1877

Six guards had to hold John Wayne back...he was going to beat her! If you know Sacheen, she's not a very big lady. She's actually read the entire speech not too long ago on a podcast. She is currently battling cancer.

This is what the song Pocahontas by Neil Young is about! "Marlon Brando, Pocahontas, and me"

@Mark Ehrlich Listen to it. I kinda does relate. I do like Redbone. They had that hit "Come and Get Your Love"

@Mark Ehrlich Thanks for the info Mark. I'll see if I can find that CD. My dad and I played Bobby Bare's "Detroit City" and "500 Miles Away From Home" in one of the several bands we played together in. Neil's song is about the plight of Native Americans in general and specifically about Marlon Brando rejecting his Oscar for "The Godfather". I remember watching it on TV when I was pretty young. Neil Young is my favorite music hero. I play many covers of his. He has been a friend to Native Americans for decades. I lost my wife a couple years ago. She was 1/2 Chippewa and 1/2 French from Sault Ste Marie Michigan. I miss her every day. Peace and love to you...Jim
