+John Vanyo Sr, I can see why he called it that,, it does look like a barrel. This knot is actually the single improved-clinch knot. There is a double improved-clinch knot where instead of taking the single tag end of the line through the hook, you double it over and tie the same knot. Not really sure if it is stronger. Thanks for watching!
59 and just started using slip bobber for fishing the deeper water where I live... that plastic tube was a mystery to me so I never bought them just used some of the wife's yarn lol
One of the most important video I 've ever seen. I'm 74 and I never seen anything like this. Going to town tomorrow and get rigged out. Thanks for the video !!!!!!
5 years later, here I am watching your video, Davis. Thank you for the nice tutorial that actually shows it works. I don't have a boat; I can't afford one BUT I appreciate that you catch some good fish I am salivating right now. Scale, gut, make a few slits on both sides and smother them with turmeric powder and sugar and deep fry them. Oolala! Now I'm going to watch your latest video to see how you look and sound like fast forward 5 years. 😊 Happy fishing from Warren, Pennsylvania, Davis!
Just found your channel. This video is absolutely the best ive seen on correct way of tying on a slip boober. No music , very cleat voice , wonderfull. Im a new subscriber now.
I used to bobber-fish for Northern with my Dad. We used the round bobbers held on by wire loops and turn the wire to the side so the bobber would slip but I could never figure out how to use those thru-the-bobber type. Back then, 1960's, we didn't have pre-tied knots we tied on tiny rubber bands. It worked. Now I know this way, thanks so much 60 yo Daddy's little girl,
I have a tip that might be beneficial. One of the best lessons I had learned with crappie fishing (especially using jigs) is using jig heads that are made of light wire. The commercial jig heads (RR and such) use heavy wire. If one is fishing for crappie in brush, light wire jigs are absolutely the best. If the jig gets snagged, you can gently pull the jig loose, without disturbing the crappie gang hanging out down there. Light wire will bend and come unsnagged exponentially easier, resulting in fewer lost jigs, while minimizing the disturbance of the brush pile one is on. Look for some independent jig makers in Texas for those with light wire jigs. I hope this helps, because it worked for me!
Better to use a swivel to attach a leader with jig. Round swivel won't get stuck in bobber stem. The jig will. Also if you use a lighter test for the leader, when snagged and have to break off the leader line will break and you won't lose your bobber and have to rerig the whole setup.
Wow...259 dislikes by idiots commenting on his vid telling him how to do 'better' what he just showed us how to do. All of these "experts" giving him advice and thumbs down probably couldn't catch fish if their lives depended on it. By the way, good video brother 👊 I enjoyed it and appreciate the time and effort you took to try and teach others a skill you have learned.
I like the way this guy talks etc. Not like the other nitwits. I caught my first 2 crappie ever last night. At 44. No bobber etc as I was in a river, but I will watch you teach anything regarding fishing. Thanks!
I've tied thousands of improved clinches and your method blows my mind. No more fumbling, trying to thread the eyelet loop and getting my finger stuck on the improved loop. Thanks man!
Recommendation - use a smaller pencil bobber to minimize the tension the fish feels when it get's on the jig and easier for you to see bobber movement.
Hi Bryan - check out your name and mine! And now 2 yrs later, I am 51 and learning how to do this! Maybe it’s a glitch in the matrix or something. All the best to you!
Man.i can remember when I was a kid.my dad use to take a piece of fishing line & tie it in knots above his bobber & slide it up & down.i never really payed much attention to it.bug I guess it was the old-school way of making a slip cork.i like this better.but he used to catch em
Check out Gapen bobbers, they have a hook on device using a simple plastic stopper to create that hole for the line to slip thru. Someone is then able to attach and detach their bobber in certain situations. Works nice, tons of sizes, Gapen.
Super helpful. I'm new to crappie fishing so this helps! You can tie the improved clinch super fast with forceps. Make a loop with the line like normal, but insert the forceps through the loop. Turn the forceps 4-6 times to create the wraps and then grab the tag end with the forceps and pull it through. Then just insert tag through upper loop. Takes 2 seconds to tie it with forceps when you get the hang of it.
huh how do you set it up so that the float sits horizontal on the water without your jig touching bottom? very very lite jig or juts hook n worm with no weight?
Have you ever had a problem with your jig eyelet getting stuck in the bottom of your float ? When it happens your jig doesn’t sink . I use thill bobbers . I can do a bobber stop on either side but that’s a lot of trouble.
Good video but might I add using a swivel between your main line and a leader. I like using small diameter braided line on my spool (hi vis) that's between 8-10 lb test. The line works its way through the slip bobber much quicker than mono, getting to depth faster. Then tie a swivel with a 6lb fluorocarbon leader. I also like to put a slightly larger bead above the swivel so it doesn't jam into the bottom of the slip bobber. Your jig head (or sinkers and Aberdeen hook) gets tied to the 6lb fluorocarbon. Then if you do get snagged and have to break, you only lose your leader. Your slip rig stays in tact. One last thing, I usually like to double or triple tie the yarn slip and cut the tag ends short to ensure it don't have a chance to jam into the bead.
You sure have get my attention. What rods are the beat for crappie and walleye perch sunfish. Is middle light good? I see hock setting is so light . I checked out CCV , but 1st didn’t have any idea what is good for me. And messed rods were sold out now and lack of skill has broken 3 nice rods at my cottage this season. Best Regards John
Thanks for the tips guy. I'll be fishing at night ASAP, from a yak pa14. The jungles didn't kill me, so maybe the lakes will. Appreciate your time, I can only hope I catch some like you had so easily done so here. Later Ty
What's the difference between using the slip line and just putting a bobber stop above the actual bobber? Seems like the bobber stop would be just as effective.
Good job. It was understandable, and I now know how to use a slip bobber. Was wondering why you had to redo the rig and why you emphasized using artificials and not having to go get bait when at 12:00 minute you clearly have a live minnow.
Kenneth Garrison my bobber stop was slipping so i re-tied a new stop on the line. And the 12:00 minute mark was not a minnow, that a really small crappie that fell off the hook. I can see how you though it was a minnow though. I didn't have any live bait in the boat with me when I filmed this, but I have used minnows on this type of rig. It's just cheaper to use plastics since live bait is sometimes hard to keep for days.
you don't need the bead, nor the thread stopper. Just tie on a piece of line to your main line with a uni-knot, the stopper should stop there. My only gripe with the slip bobber is when i fish from shore and drag/jig the jig to shore it gets stuck in the bobber hole. I'm sure the slip bobber technique isn't for shore fishermen, but I like that the bobber can be used as a weed guard when fishing in tullies/reeds.
I’ve been fishing a lake once a year and do well early and late trolling with jigs twisters tubes etc. it’s usually hot during the day and lake is mostly 6-10 ft. Any suggestions for those conditions? I’d like to be able to get some mid day :) or more in the morning or evening.
During the summer months, fish may move to slightly deeper water during mid-day from their early morning or late evening feeding spots. Since the most active feeding times are early morning or late evening, downsizing your jig/lure during the middle of the day may help get more bites.
Flopping Crappie thank you I’ll try that. It’s a small lake and there is one 15-18 ft hole. I’ll try that mid day. You think that slip bobber jigging would work ? Or just drop them over? I watched your video with the live scope. Holy cow. That’s insane. I want one. :)
it will go into the reel fine, but it may get caught in the eyelits of the rod. also when casting, the line may catch on the slip knot when coming off the reel.
Thanks for this video! I did not know how to use those slip bobbers mainly because I always cast and retreive or straight line jig over the side. That is just a really great effective way to get suspended fish. FYI: when I was a kid fishing back in the 60's they would have a knot diagram on all types of product packaging called the "fisherman's knot." It was the "clinch knot" which is now "improved." It always said to make 7 winds around the main line. I still do it. Putting the tag end thru that last loop is the "improvement." Appreciate the time you took sharing a great technique!
Thank you for watching, i'm glad I could help explain the slip bobber. I still see the knot diagram on some hook packages, but not all companies do that anymore. I wish they would because it does help quite a few fisherman out.
@@dmund222 i always cut my to about a half inch and the most important part is to melt the tag ends quickly with a lighter to melt the nylon. They will frey apart in 5 casts otherwise...
I have found the fused braided lines work every bit as well as monofilament in a spinning rig. And the knots hold better and are easier to tie. I haven't used mono in years. It doesn't tend to spin off the reel in a tangle either.
No, I forgot to do that in this video. I mostly use the rubber bobber stops now, the same kind people use to peg bullet weights for punching cover when bass fishing
I dont think I mentioned the polamer knot in this video. The two knots were the improved clinch knot and the loop knot. The loop knot will provide a more lively action to the jig were as the improved clinch knot will give you a better feel of a bite ( I usually use this knot when fishing live bait)
Using the bobber you used means your pole is dedicated to bobber fishing. I prefer the spherical bobber with the button you can push to extend the shepherd's crook (hook without barb) on the other end, and turn it so the tip of the crook (where the barb would be on a hook) is NOT where the hole is, preferably, 180 degrees opposite the hole so the bobber slides along the line. That way, if you want to fish without a bobber, you can just remove it and slide the stop and bead all the way down toward the hook, or what I prefer is a swivel snap - so I can quickly change to a lure, or a different jig (color, hair, plastic, etc).
danny662001 the idea is the yarn knot will reel through the eyelits of the rod and onto the spool without slipping down the line with allow you to reel up as close to the jig as you want. This way you're only casting with a foot or so of line out. Now, I have tried braided line, mono line, and this yarn for the slip knot, and nothing is a guarantee. Occasionally the knot does slip and you will have to reset it or tie a new knot. Also you might want to put a small split shot or rubber bobber stop about a foot above the jig. This is to make sure the fish doesn't use the bobber as leverage to get off the hook when you're reeling it in. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
im trying to figure this out and try it but its super hard with no line on my fishing pole. ugh. guess ill just go play catch with myself instead. ttyl :)
Interesting. I have never used this type of float. I normally drop straight down now that I have Livescope, but I can see the advantage of this. thanks for sharing.
With the slip string knot intended to act as a stop , wouldn't it lend itself well to clip off the excess tag ends? To avoid snags when casting out of the reel, such as in the video experience. ••• better option stopper probably the gizzmo plastic 3 or 4 hole variety imo.
Shawn Scott ice bee. Using the rubber bobber stops lately. They seem to work better. They are the same stops bass fisherman use to peg a bullet weight to a hook.
If you trim some of that lead off the bottom of that jig and then wrap the shaft with dental floss, and then put some gel glue on the dental floss, and then you slide your jig up on there and hold it for a second. Your jig will stay on much better, and last a lot longer.
I put the line through the jig eyelet twice then tie the knot the way you describe. You are spreading the pressure over two loops of line at the jig eyelet instead of one. Much stronger knot.
thank you for the informative detailed explanation,,i would think to avoid getting snagged you need to cut the tag ends of that slip knot shorter,,i would also use a swivel between the float and the jig to act as a stopper and less tangle say about a foot away from the jig but i suppose your method works fine so long at the bobber tube dont get inserted in the jig arbor,,but i prefer to use tooth floss to make my own slip knot, forgot how to do it properly though,,been a while but the fishing and crappie season craze is catching on me lol have not been out there in years
Split shot lead weight is alot simpler and faster setup..bobber rests against weight, just big enough to not go inside bobber.....just pinch on and slide up n down to depth you wanna fish.... never moves
Thanks for the tutorial. I always just drop the jig, and follow it down with my rod tip, but in deep water, this gets a bit tiresome. Having a slip bobber seems the way to go. I seem to remember there was a way to make your own stoppers with braid and a small coffee straw, but I've never tried it. Again, thanks for the video!
I thought you did a good job making this video. Those who never used slip bobbers before, can now. It's a cinch knot but I grew up calling it a noose knot. Thanks for the vid.
My frend, let me suggest a better, more efficient set. When you put the first slip and bobber on the main line, put a larger bead on the line below. (bigger than the bottom hole of the bobber tube). Then install the next slip. You'll probably ask why? Well, when you lose the jig, the bobber will stay on the line. Later, a good quality swivel should be tied to the fishing line and at the very end you will have to tie the jig. This is a very important operation that will protect the main line from twisting.
This was a combo by Shakespeare. Crappie hunter I believe it's called. I switched over to a few different other brands I like, but any 1000 or 2000 size reel is great for pitching slip bobbers over brush piles.
I've been looking for a really clear and close-up video for this and you showed me exactly what I needed.Thank you! I can't wait to go crappie fishing in Ontario now!!
My Grandpa used to use a live minnow and tie a sinker about a foot above him. He'd throw it out and let it sink to the bottom and just tear them up. It worked in the 80s and 90s but today I can't get it to work for nothing lol.
In this video, I think I used Southern Pro Crappie tubes. There is a link to it in the description. Black and Chartreuse was the color they were biting on that day. Thanks for Watching!

This young man just showed us how to tie a crappie rig, do it cheaply, - and to top it off - he catches fish. NICE JOB Davis.
My dad used rubber bands as a stop on slip corks, it worked but you needed to keep the rubber band and line wet when you slipped it up or down.
That’s a cool bobber type.
I need to say this again as I prepare for the fishing season.... This is THE BEST video I have seen on tying slip bobbers!!!!! Thanks again Davis!!!!

Do you put anything 🤔 in the middle of the jib&Bobber to keep the bobber from constantly hitting the jig head.
You can put a bead between the bobber and jig to prevent this from happening
I'm new to crappie fishing. I'm curious about the bead. what are they for and what do they do
Check out Gapen bobbers, they have a hook on device using a simple plastic stopper to create that hole for the line to slip thru. Someone is then able to attach and detach their bobber in certain situations. Works nice, tons of sizes, Gapen.

Good crappie rig. Everybody wants to add their own little variation. Good stuff !
Hey what’s the bead between the cork and the stopper for? Thanks!
Do you ever glue your lures to your jigs or use a loop knot for your jigs....
I use a loop knot quite a bit, and I've seen others glue there plastics onto a jighead but haven't tried it myself.
What about just putting a really small split shot weight above the bobber as the stopper?

Hey man! Great video! Question How does that stopper not get caught up on your reel when you are fishing pretty deep?
I have a fluorocarbon leader at the end of my braid. The stop will not go through the knot tying both lines. What should I do on this set up?
I'm in Louisiana and we start catching em on the bank around February. Thx for video

Cut the tag ends of that stopper knot leave about 1/4" at each side and it will not get tangled "I'm just saying"

That way, if you want to fish without a bobber, you can just remove it and slide the stop and bead all the way down toward the hook, or what I prefer is a swivel snap - so I can quickly change to a lure, or a different jig (color, hair, plastic, etc).
They also make split bobbers so your rod is not DEDICATED to slip bobber fishing
Its called a "SLIP" bobber for a reason.......
How do you cast when the bobber is set 15 feet from the hook (like in this video)?
I was replying to Phil using a fixed round red/wht spring loaded J hook style bobber.
TBL.....Gotcha......he's using that bobber as a slip bobber also
What is the Bead for ?
What happens to the yarn when you reel it in? How do you cast with 15 ft of line out?
danny662001 the idea is the yarn knot will reel through the eyelits of the rod and onto the spool without slipping down the line with allow you to reel up as close to the jig as you want.
I have been using this set up for 40 years.
Subscibed from Idaho, l love crappie fishing here there's no limit. The crappie you are catching are big, enjoy watching, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Agnes Currie Check out 3 pound crappie fishing. Awesome crappie content with drone footage.
i wish my state had no limit!
One should also put a bead on behind the bobber to protect your knot.
im trying to figure this out and try it but its super hard with no line on my fishing pole. ugh. guess ill just go play catch with myself instead. ttyl :)
Nice video. What boat do you have?
1998 Fischer f18
Excellent! One single video and you know all you need to go fishing.
Interesting. I have never used this type of float. I normally drop straight down now that I have Livescope, but I can see the advantage of this. thanks for sharing.
Can you slowly retrieve the luer to give it movement or do just let it sit there till something bites
Yes, I have filmed a number of other videos with the setup using the technique you described.
I always double up my jigs about a foot apart and when the bit gets hot ya catchem 2 at a time
With the slip string knot intended to act as a stop , wouldn't it lend itself well to clip off the excess tag ends? To avoid snags when casting out of the reel, such as in the video experience.
••• better option stopper probably the gizzmo plastic 3 or 4 hole variety imo.
Shawn Scott ice bee. Using the rubber bobber stops lately. They seem to work better. They are the same stops bass fisherman use to peg a bullet weight to a hook.
Thanks for the tips. Can this setup be used for sea fishing?
I'm sure it could work for sea fishing. I have never tried it though.
@@FloppingCrappie thank you. i will try it and will let you know if it worked. cheers!
If you trim some of that lead off the bottom of that jig and then wrap the shaft with dental floss, and then put some gel glue on the dental floss, and then you slide your jig up on there and hold it for a second. Your jig will stay on much better, and last a lot longer.
if you have trouble cinching the knot it can also help to spit on it.
I put the line through the jig eyelet twice then tie the knot the way you describe. You are spreading the pressure over two loops of line at the jig eyelet instead of one. Much stronger knot.
What part of Wisconsin are you from? I'm in Appleton and just getting into crappie fishing... looking for some pointers on where to go.
Erik Conradson west central. Twin cities area.
thank you for the informative detailed explanation,,i would think to avoid getting snagged you need to cut the tag ends of that slip knot shorter,,i would also use a swivel between the float and the jig to act as a stopper and less tangle say about a foot away from the jig but i suppose your method works fine so long at the bobber tube dont get inserted in the jig arbor,,but i prefer to use tooth floss to make my own slip knot, forgot how to do it properly though,,been a while but the fishing and crappie season craze is catching on me lol have not been out there in years
Split shot lead weight is alot simpler and faster setup..bobber rests against weight, just big enough to not go inside bobber.....just pinch on and slide up n down to depth you wanna fish.... never moves
Great idea
That's some nice speckled perch.
How did you know how far down the crappie were?
I went over the brush piles with my Humminbird sonar and saw the fish were suspended around a certain depth, which is where I set the bobber depth.
Flopping Crappie thank you!
Thanks for the video. Been wondering how to rig this up.
Glad to help
Thanks for the tutorial. I always just drop the jig, and follow it down with my rod tip, but in deep water, this gets a bit tiresome. Having a slip bobber seems the way to go. I seem to remember there was a way to make your own stoppers with braid and a small coffee straw, but I've never tried it. Again, thanks for the video!
I thought you did a good job making this video. Those who never used slip bobbers before, can now. It's a cinch knot but I grew up calling it a noose knot. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for watching!
Waldemar Reczydlo thanks for the tip. I'll try it next time.
Ok, I highly recommend it
I'd like to see a video of this rig.
What real are you using
This was a combo by Shakespeare.
Dolban Outdoors thanks! Hope you catch big slabs!
Should wet it with spit si it doesnt heat up when you tighten it and compromise the strength of the line.
yup my pappy taught me that
Awesome video appreciate all your expertise.
Thanks for watching!
In Australia they call it a blood knot. I have also been told by my father it is a fishermans knot. It is the knot I always use.
It's the first knot my dad taught me as well. Thanks for watching!
In Utah they call it the "What" knot!
My Grandpa used to use a live minnow and tie a sinker about a foot above him. He'd throw it out and let it sink to the bottom and just tear them up. It worked in the 80s and 90s but today I can't get it to work for nothing lol.
good catch of crappie. what kind of artificial bait do you use again?
In this video, I think I used Southern Pro Crappie tubes. There is a link to it in the description. Black and Chartreuse was the color they were biting on that day. Thanks for Watching!
