You can tell Tony enjoys the free open format of Letterman. All he has to do is make his stories funny which he does. You can see he’s like a child he enjoys the attention. No movie or commercial plugs or yammering on about current events or personalities. Just regular life stories and thoughts and silliness. Miss those days. Before computers and greed.

Hilarious from start to finish. That guy always added a unique seasoning of hilarity like Alan Kalter did, enhancing the shows he was on. Even his facial expressions would make a joke sometimes.

They became a "guest" and Tony sat in the audience. Looking for this as my brother was there, sitting right next to Tony in the audience! He is/always was a huge fan of Tony Randall and the look on his face was priceless when this happened. I think PeeWee Her an was also on thus episode. I checked - no Pee wee and Tony on the same show. I found a Who Asked for It from 2-17-87, where an audience member (actually staffer Brian McAloon) asks if Dave will have guest hosts, and Dave says no, but the show has guest audience members, whereupon Brian is tossed out, and Tony sits in his seat. Sitting next to Tony is an elderly gentleman (slicked-back white hair, glasses) who shakes Tony’s hand. This was 32 years ago, and I doubt this man would still be alive today. So unlikely your brother. That’s the closest I could find that matches your description.
Actually, the guy directly behind Tony is another staffer. But the guy next to _him_ might be your brother. I'm fairly certain it was Carl Reiner. As a gag, during his segment at home base he went and grabbed a random from the audience and had him come sit at home base instead, and sat in the audience cracking wise while Dave interviewed the random civilian. I want to say it might have been the November 1986 episode with Drake Sather, as I also have a strong recollection of watching that episode, but I'm really not sure about that.

If you have "all" of Letterman ..can you post the video of the Song Paul Shaffer sang about all he guests who refused to ever come on the show..it only aired once...CBS was NOT happy
It was on the Late show during a period when Letterman was just going very "independent" in thought..and not yet a shill for Les Moonves so between 1994-2004 lol...10 years of shows... if I can recall anything more....I will post. I dont rememeber the guests on that show..sorry. The song was scathing. brilliant.
It has to be around 2004-2008 now that I think back..Dave starts a segmenttalking about Pacino, Deniro, Nicholson, and others who said NEVER to coming on lol
Not sure about the years here, but he seems to be referencing his future wife. (Not sure if he is already a widower here.) He says, She asked to marry me, after the pinch. He was very hesitant to marry his wife because she was so much younger than he was, but she was determined and kept asking him to marry her. Cute story about an unlikely relationship that actually worked out well. I do however agree that pinching would NEVER work today, thank goodness.

I thought that Tony Randall was one of those guests that Johnny Carson forbade Dave from having on his show.
