Monsoon is such an interesting character. Unlike Sam, Mistral and Sundowner - Monsoon makes his first appearance *right* before you fight him. And while canonically he is apparently a soldier from the Khmer Rouge, I had seen a theory about Monsoon that he was actually the consciousness of a Dead Patriot, given that he knows a bit more than everyone else about Armstrong's master plan, his Nihilism and his focus on memes carrying over through generations being an aspect of the Patriots controlling the world through wars for generations. Also - while a random chance during the fights end Monsoon is left pleading for his life against Raiden's onslaught "Stop, stop it!" Meaning that Raiden was so horrifyingly violent he put the fear of death BACK into a Nihilist
I dont beleive Monsoon was a soldier in war, but rather grew up in a place of war (I dont know much about Cambodian history though so forgive me if my assumption is wrong). He was associated more with gang organizations than that of military ones, Its said he was involved with drug trade and human trafficking. Plus, He lost his body in a gang shootout. He also comments on the way gangs work to Sam in the DLC. I think there's a bit of depressing irony to his life, that even after Desperado saved him, he was turned back into a tool for an organization to use. Desperado is literally *written* on his body in big text. I think his memes ideology stems from his hatred of soldiers, who ruined his life from the beggining. How people have no free will and just do as they're told, hell you can even see what he's talking about with people like Khamsin. I think him begging for his life is like a realization to him, he laughs like a madman when fighting, but once he's devastated like that his facade drops. He's probably belonged to Desperado so long it had an effect on him that Raiden broke, even if just temporarily. Fearing the fact that he'd just die as a tool, never reaching a peaceful life.
@@zackool It's implied that he saw the worse: "Phnom Penh taught me that," "you aren't the only one who grew up on the killing fields." Both of which was were some the worst atrocities took place. I love how monsoon keeps roasting raiden about his hypocrisy and that his actions are thoughtless, but then when he pushes him too far and reawakens Jack, he immediately backpedals like “shit, okay this dude is actually a psycho” lol
Then he begs him to stop (he can also say, “Do as you please!” under other conditions). Yeah, it was just brief, and he does face his demise with his nihilistic/Socially Darwinistic dignity somewhat intact, but still, too little, too late.
@@thebigf0m I don't think so. I died to him idiotically during his qte and got a B rank, but he still begged Raiden to stop for me, so something else triggers it. The poster of this video was also at max hp when he said it, and when I died to the qte, I was also reset at max hp, so I'm inclined to believe that's the case.
I love how they keep taunting Raiden by constantly calling him Jack the Ripper and yet Monsoon seems shocked and disgusted once he shows just what his Jack the Ripper side is.
@@Gamer88334 I'm pretty sure he did. It's obvious after he's beaten 17:09 that he's 100% cool with dying, and he isn't hypocritical about his survival of the fittest motto as he freely and unashamedly accepts Raiden was stronger than him. Even when Raiden tries to throw his "it's only nature running its course" line back at him, it completely fails since Monsoon always acknowledged that it goes both ways way before he ever met Raiden. Even during the fight, it's not like Monsoon gets crushed like Loki against Hulk since he holds his own enough to warrant disappointment at "getting what he wished for" 14:11
@@jarrettkelly9646 Not really. When Monsoon taunted him by calling him "Jack the Ripper" he didn't actually expect Raiden to decide "yeah, you're right, that's who I am". He intended to kill Raiden without even a fight, it's made obvious by 3:14 when he says "you can *die* with a clear conscious" with his sais ready to stab Raiden to death right then and there. Then, when Raiden says a second later "You're right... about me, I mean..." Monsoon actually lowers his sais in surprise. He isn't shocked at what Jack the Ripper is, he's surprised Raiden actually agreed with him and let loose the Ripper at all (otherwise he wouldn't have said this with a smile 6:30). And... "bead for paragraphs"? What does that mean? I've never heard "bead" used like that in a sentence, and I've had several English classes through college. Al R-e like the idea that might makes right, or that cultural differences like how in some countries you do certain things because that's just what everyone does. The new meaning of memes still kind of applies to the old meaning but the old meaning is more expansive.
Only in Metal Gear Rising can you find a white cyborg African man fighting a nihilistic Cambodian man held together by magnets who talks about memes with an electrically powered katana fueled by spine fluids attached to his heels.

+Unknown Unkno, You mean what a cheesy fight. Everything that wa said during this encounter sounded like it was made by the writers of Resident Evil 4.
This game's boss designs are bloody brilliant, imagine fighting slenderman that is a woman and also has like 50 hands on her back, a dude who uses self dissection for a method of dodging and can break the 4th wall at the end of his battle, a bald scissor man with ERA that SHOULD HAVE GONE ON TANKS, a Brazilian samurai who is somehow stronger without his sword, and a senator who can become tungsten at will
The most favorable thing in this whole scene is how Monsoon attempts to do one of those "oh YOU are the bad guy" manipulation speeches, only to realise he was telling lies that were actually the truth, in the end he regretted it
Monsoon made a horrible judge of character. He thought Raiden would be an easier kill if he reminded him of his past as Jack the Ripper. He thought Raiden would never be able to make peace with that part of himself. But he did, and the rest- as well as Monsoon himself- was history.
This is my favorite moment in the whole game. The introduction is grandiose, that opening line "How pleased you are to chop away Jack the Ripper" is one of my favorite pieces of dialogue in gaming. The hysterical philosophical debate about memes, to a younger me, seemed like it was about funny images of cats with captions, but as a man, I understand that it refers to cultural DNA. How fitting it is that the term Meme has two different connotations, but has ultimately remained the same. A meme like hatred is passed on by victims of war and genoice, and a meme about minecraft creepers is passed from one person to another. Back to the game, after this cutscene, chock full of heavy dialogue with lots to read into, Monsoon prepares to fight you, and that guitar riff that leads into the fight is just fucking sick. It gets me pumped every single time. The music in this game is absolutely incredible, I love it so much that if I struggle with a particular fight I just turn the music up as loud as I can handle. Monsoons theme is particular fantastic to me, the lyrics paint Monsoon as a victim of a particularly harsh meme. Adrenaline. The constant blood pumping tension and excitement of war leads his normal life empty and meaningless. This is a very common thing for veterans to experience, and this song captures the mental anguish of that so well. The fight itself is also wonderful, and after hurling cars, helicopters, giant spinning wheels of random metallic junk, and a marble pillar at you, you get to slice him to ribbons. The song ends just as wonderfully as it starts, and just as suddenly too. I love this game so much.
@Chandelier Mirage Yeah but then you can get that annoying thing where his hand keeps attacking even when he's stunned, like I kept having happen.. Screw that crap-
12:15 As soon as those vocals kick in, whoever is playing the game just got their ass kicked for a straight TWO minutes without even touching Monsoon once. Absolute brutal beat down
I love how he poses all cinematically when he gets to 40% and his theme music fully kicks in, just for him to start poking Raiden from across the field
Monsoon: Let me explain to you the concept of Meme, the little actions o attitudes you were taught to blend in society, something like society's genes. Simple things like saying "thank you" are memes, but how much of your normal behavior is conditioned by you and how much is conditioned by those memes? Since everyone uses them to be part of our social system built by those mere memes, are you really being yourself?? Everyone's reaction: Huehuehuehue he said "memes"
Personally, I don't think it's "disgust," per se. But rather Monsoon is making a literal observation: Raiden has slipped from his superficial moral juxtaposition, and now has truly embrace the Ripper.
@supersoniclegend Monsoon doesn't fight because he likes to, he does because he believes it's an unavoidable truth about life; to him, trying to stop killing is akin to trying to stop a thunderstorm. You have to remember that Monsoon is a nihilist; he believes that nobody believes in anything, that we are products of memes (basically people embodies ideas/experiences/actions from other people). Morality, to Monsoon, is just a fancy that people say they adhere to. To him, caring for someone is no different than saying "thank you" to someone who held the door for you: Reflexive, mindless, and, ultimately, shallow.
Let's be real, Metal Gear Rising Revengence awoken the 10 year old edge lord inside all of us I mean what the hell does revengence even suppose to mean
12:14 literally my favorite part I love how the music changes with lyrics is just so satisfying. Like literally monsoon has the best theme which makes the boss fight so much better and enjoyable and the best part the fight is long
When I fought against Monsoon for the first time, and I saw his ability, it made me realise how OP Buggy The Clown from One Piece could actually be if he just took things serious for once.
12:14 And it will come Like a flood of pain Pouring down on me And it will not let up Until the end is here And it will come Through the darkest day In my final hour And it will never rest Until the clouds are clear Until it finds my dreams have disappeared My Dreams have disappeared!!!!
That would be me. All I have seen are the Armstrong, Sam, and Monsoon boss fights and all I know about jack is that he is a hypocrite who likes stabbing people for no reason and thinks trying to put an end to war is madness I'm sure he is alot more heroic in context but I just thought it's funny.
I know nothing about it, and I already know the fact that he was already a villain by heart in the beginning anyways. I mean, his real name IS Jack The Ripper after all. So it wasn’t that hard to guess dude. However, If I do remember correctly, is that he’s an Anti-Hero, not technically a villain because It’s his suit that’s been making him driven to combat and doesn’t realize it. Also, stop being such a gamekeeper
@@Angel-bz5jm You raise some fair points, but Raiden does have a good reason for stabbing people. And Sundowner’s fight...yeah, you thought Monsoon was bad, but at least he had some justification (suffering under Pol Pot). And then there's the whole child brain-harvesting/turning-them-into-child-soldiers operation they’ve got going on and suffice to say, Raiden has some good reasons for killing people here.
This game is the equivalent of having a good reason but going about the worst way to handle it. Its still completely badass and I still think jack is a hero. Being traumatized as a child led him to being one of the best killers on earth and he has to fight Armstrong in the end which is more of a conflicting set of ideals. Raiden doesn’t really disagree with Armstrong but he still wont allow Armstrong to create conflict.
I wouldn't say Monsoon is insane or has lost his mind in any significant way. It seems more like he just has twisted ideals, such as "kill or be killed" and that "memes are the DNA of the soul", which basically means that people embody the ideals and beliefs that are passed to them either from good/bad past experiences and/or other people. Raiden, in Ripper Mode at least, actually does love cold-blooded murder and lives to see bloodshed and pain, whereas Monsoon simply sees fighting and killing as a part of life, not good nor bad. It's just like how he views the cherry blossoms from the Jetstream Sam DLC, when he says that he thinks they weren't beautiful nor ugly, just existing and a part of life, nothing more and nothing less. He sees bloodshed and fighting the same way; not good, not evil, just sorta there in our lives, and that just like rain falling and wind blowing, there's nothing anyone can do to stop or change it.
0:06 There’s just something so funny about Monsoon introducing himself while striking such pose. The way the camera zooms in as he doesn’t move a single muscle along with the way he says: _"My name is Monsoon of the Winds of Destruction."_ is just so amusing.
I am Halfway through the video and I'm so happy that he eventually sings. I didn't understand why there wasn't someone singing and just music. guess I forgot he joined later lol.
16:41 Let this sink in: a dude that just spent an entire cutscene mocking you for wanting to save lives, sees to it that you’re psychologically injured enough to reawaken the side of you that you tried to get rid of, and basically sees people’s lives and their values as meaningless, a guy like *that* is terrified of you killing him. Just for a moment, you scared a hardcore, sociopathic nihilist into valuing his own life long after he stopped valuing other people’s lives. Too little too late, though. Should have known that provoking someone as infamous as “Jack The Ripper” would have…less than pleasant results.
Hilariously, he only does that if the player does a good enough job beating him. Otherwise, he just says "do as you wish". A nihilist to the end. Either way, he dies in comfort knowing he passed a meme onto you.
In the beginning, Sam said Jack denied his weapon its purpose. But Jack The Ripper would give the sword purpose. Sam was probably looking for a better fight.
This is one of the best cutscenes in metal Gear history! Monsoon knows about his death yet his words will remain in Raiden's head forever and he know that. Thank you for the likes I really appreciate you all
Monsoon is probably my favorite character in MGR:R. He isn't a warmonger like Sundowner; he isn't in love like Mistral; he isn't bloodthirsty like Sam or Raiden. He is but a nihilist, pure and simple despair. He doesn't believe in anything because he believes that nobody does, that everyone is controlled by memes.
The gameplay is based on Raiden's ability to cut things in pieces. But here they put a boss already in pieces, so you can't easily damage him with your weapons. I love this contrast for some reason. An iconic gameplay's dynamic having its nemesis it's a really cool concept
if you ask me, the good boss fight in TPP was with Metal Gear Rex (the nick name I gave however-you-spell-it's-name because he looked like Metal Gear Rex from MGS1)!
04:54 "uhm, boss? i stabbed him and now hes laughing, i think i fucked up" - quote from some random comment on a different video with the same cutscene.
Reminds me of the quote from SAO Abridged: "Uh, boss? A thought occurs; this guy thought he was going up against Laughing Coffin, yet he still only brought himself and a small child... Still think we can take this guy?"
11:02 i like how the player was looking for monsoon while grabbing the loot and once he finds him too close he goes back quickly, scared, to throw him more grenades ahahah
He was mortally wounded during a fight with a mob gang and decided to convert himself into a cyborg. That and his body was built to channel/harness the Earths own magnetic force

You raise some fair points, but Raiden does have a good reason for stabbing people.
Monsoon telling Raiden he's lost his mind... clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.
SonicStar917
Its what makes this game interesting.
mental man
I wouldn't say Monsoon is insane or has lost his mind in any significant way.
Monsoon is a nihilist, but he's rational. Raiden is not.
Hello pot meet kettle.

Let this sink in: a dude that just spent an entire cutscene mocking you for wanting to save lives, sees to it that you’re psychologically injured enough to reawaken the side of you that you tried to get rid of, and basically sees people’s lives and their values as meaningless, a guy like *that* is terrified of you killing him. Just for a moment, you scared a hardcore, sociopathic nihilist into valuing his own life long after he stopped valuing other people’s lives. Too little too late, though. Should have known that provoking someone as infamous as “Jack The Ripper” would have…less than pleasant results.
