🐶 WOOF WOOF! Managed to get another review in before the end of Ima(y)ge! This time, I went for the big one: East Of West, but unfortunately my opinion didn't line up with the masses. However, I wanted to bring my honest opinion, and hopefully you guys respect that (it's the internet, so it's never guaranteed, but still!) . I hope you guys enjoy this, and it's been talking with people on both sides of the fence when it comes to this book. If you're interested in picking this, or any other book up, I'd recommend our sponsor: OrganicPricedBooks, and if you use code WOOFWOOF you will get $2 off your order! . Give this video a thumbs up (it'll probably need it) subscribe if you're new, and share this video where you can! I'm reading Paper Girls currently, but the next video should be my haul! Until then, stay Mad, Doggs! WOOF WOOF! 🐶
I like you are being honest Maddogg. I have read loads of Overhyped books in the past cough Kraven last hunt cough Arkham Asylum but love books like AvX and yes even parts of tom king batman. Different people have different opinions and thats why this makes this hobby fun. Don't matter your age or background we all unite over a common love of these books.
Im sooo glad your critical in books. Too many people youtubers love every comic. I love to hear the positives and negatives. Keep up the great work and content! Woof woof!
Just finished reading the series yesterday. I loved the beginning, got lost in the middle a bit, and enjoyed the last third. I can’t say this is the best image series of all time but it is definitely one of my favorites. The world design and the characters were awesome. The one thing I’d say is that I don’t really know who I’d classify as the “hero” in this story. No one is really a “good guy.” The art by Dragotta is probably the real star here, as it was solid through the whole series. I can see where you’re coming from with lots of your arguments but I definitely enjoyed East of West more than you did. Great video!
Finally, the haircut that has been promised for weeks! 😂 Great review! I sold my two HC’s a year or more ago as i just couldn’t get into in, i read it twice as i thought i might have been in a bad mood first time round but it was not a great story for me, there were great moments but overall it wasn’t for me.
I liked this video and narration format. Good to know your views without spoilers. I sampled a chapter digitally and I found it fascinating. So, bought all three books from FP in early May. This will be my first Hickman read and looking forward to it. :)
I always felt like I had to study about the world of east of west before reading it. So for a first time reader it might feel as if you missed about 10 years of previous content. However, having that knowledge really pays off imho. Loved the intrigue, the betrayals and looking forward to doing a full readthrough now that Year 3 is on my shelf.
Ive got the first trade of this to read but got a feeling i won't like it. The art is nice though. Ps very smart with the new haircut marcus. You 've taken the mad hair out of the maddogg now.😉 But seriously ive had a bit of a crap week, its nice to sit back, relax and watch some good content.
The only thing that disappointed me was the ending. It felt very abrupt and underdeveloped, which is my main criticism of Hickman's writing as whole, despite really loving his stories. As far as the characters speaking philosophically, I'm a man who loves Cormac McCarthy novels, where everyone, including the narrator talks like that, so I loved that aspect of it most.
You saying if this was a BLV story and Babylon would be the first issue is spot on. I stopped reading for all the reasons you were uninterested and I’m glad I sought a review and found yours before rereading. Excellent synopsis!
Appreciate the honest review this one never did sound for me I think Hickman always tries to do this massive world building but dose so little in the finale result making for a confusing read
I think you nailed the review. I enjoyed it, but found like i was always racing through to get to the next death/babylon section. The world was interesting, but never gave me enough story, and just felt like a bunch of interesting concepts never really fully explained/developed. Can see why people would love the open world feel, and the theory crafting and the different elements that were going on. One day I will re-read and I'm almost certain I will take more from it on the second read through. Anyway, thanks for an entertaining video.
Just got done reading year one hardcover for the second time and am reluctant on buying year two. No character sits well enough to care. The art is good but the writing is lacking IMO.
At the end, is there a connection established between Death’s pursuit of his son and the Great War? I could not find it. This is my biggest problem with this work. I felt like I was reading 2 stories in parallel, and they did not come together towards the end.
I think if you read the series in monthly format, the tension and monthly bits of story were good. But undoubtedly, in whole, there are parts that don't matter or were sidelined for other parts.
I think a lot of people make the mistake of not realizing that some of the main.characters of the story are not really people but places. Each of the 7 regions are basically characters with the people who come out of those regions being an outgrowth of that place's overall philosophy. All the human characters are basically manifestations of where they come from. I think the real reason that the books are not perfect is that we are almost always seeing everything from the top down. We see the world leaders but rarely if ever see how these systems affect their populace. Basically we are seeing tje storyline play out at a very macro level but rarely if ever see how the regular person on the ground would see things. The few instances we do see are fairly memorable, take for example the rebels of the Union or how the first Ranger was born. Those are all great stories but they are few and far in between. There is a huge world that Hickman built but we never really see any of it.
sounds like if they made the story several times longer and further broke down all the characters (without adding any/to many) this could be better because it seams like you said so many of the characters had so much promise but few got the time to truly bear fruit Visually it looks like an amazing world for shore.
Who are you and what have you done to Marcus hair? Gotta check it out myself someday and see if it's good or not, the art doesn't seem to be the problem so hopefully the story is compelling enough
I felt East of West was the most accessible and least convoluted of any Hickman story I've read, and that's a good thing. Typically you need to learn several diagrams, maps, and a made up language in order to understand what's going on in most of his series, but this one just felt significantly more accessible.
Glad it wasn't just me, Andy! Although I feel a bit hypocritical because I give the prose in Watchmen a pass, but then again that's actual story and not just endless poems haha! Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF!
I *am a connoisseur of high-brow (at least within comics,) and I had to drop this book after the first four story arcs. It just wasn't getting to the point. There was a lot of positive, but it was just too meandering and listless.
it's a little bit overrated imo, i've read a few of the volumes, it started really good, but the writing starts to drop after the bar fight where death gets the list of the people involved, you can slowly see the immature dialogue and overall mediocre writing, but this is a problem with most of the comics out there, we are still to see a mature author, making an unique comic that's giving you a special feeling
EAST of West is overrated. Took me years to read it. Should have stayed away. Brought the first 8 volumes. Got into it at first but then it got really boring. Did not care about anyone or how it ended. Deat and his son were boring. Horsemen were boring Hickman has good world building but find his work to be really overated. Fantastic Bore. Not a fan of the Fantastic Four. Hie ruined the X-MEN. Art in East of West is good. Ranger and Bell fight was cool. Freeman was interesting. So good action scenes. It is nowhere near the greatest book. Hype. Do not read it again. Sold my paperbacks You are a good reviewer. You do not like everything

Definitely eating carrots during my next intro sketch.

Stopped at the spoilers part because I've just read the first year book but great review !
I was enjoying the read but that final panel of volume two really sold me.
At the end, is there a connection established between Death’s pursuit of his son and the Great War? I could not find it. This is my biggest problem with this work. I felt like I was reading 2 stories in parallel, and they did not come together towards the end.

I’ve started reading saga, I’m on vol 3. I’ve heard about this comic. I’m might get it
Great video bro. Nice haircut too, although I am sad to see the mess go haha
The new hair looks great! 👍🏼😉
Ive never actually read this series but ive been interested in it for a while. Also, nice cut😅
Great review Marcus!
I should probably start reading this comic
I find those prose pages infuriating, so self indulgent. Glad I'm not alone on it.
Glad it wasn't just me, Andy! Although I feel a bit hypocritical because I give the prose in Watchmen a pass, but then again that's actual story and not just endless poems haha! Thanks for watching the video mate! WOOF WOOF!
Oh damn, you got a haircut. Wasn't expecting that

It's such a great series.
Nick Dragotta. Hype met!
Rip finding year 3 at cover price :( especially on amazon
As you mention, feels boring on a first read but upon rereading you see all the connected threads
do u have any recommendation for anything is classical wild west? thanks.
Not “classical Wild West” but American Vampire has some pretty great old west style, at least in the beginning chapters.
It's the best image comic imo idc what anyone says
Nah
IMHO, Hickman’s use of prose/charts/timelines = lazy comic book writing
it's a little bit overrated imo, i've read a few of the volumes, it started really good, but the writing starts to drop after the bar fight where death gets the list of the people involved, you can slowly see the immature dialogue and overall mediocre writing, but this is a problem with most of the comics out there, we are still to see a mature author, making an unique comic that's giving you a special feeling
People who say it's overrated are dumb idc 😤
It's not my kind of scifi action. I'm over Earth based stories.
