Can confirm that the Makita 18v X2 doesn't overheat. I've used it more or less all day nonstop in 100°F (38°C) weather boring out a big tree stump. It hardly even warms up. Although it can get the batteries pretty hot when the torque light comes on.
Yeah, on the fence. I'll probably end up picking up the Makita - their battery powered skill saw is a beast
You are the man I've been looking for! What style and size bit did you use and what was your intention?
I'm really trying to find a way (if at all possible) to completely turn a tree stump into mulch via drilling not a stump grinder (to get all the way down to the roots) so far it seems impossible without a tractor
See "rotor speedy stump grinder - katsanis".
I want to do that but on a slightly smaller scale. Sorry for the rant
My super hawg will have battery trouble after just 4 or so 4" holes. Very annoying when I was doing an apartment job and had 180 holes to drill, but I quickly found a solution. Using the regular batteries will cause problems, but if you use the High Output version you will drain the entire battery before it has overheat potential. So for all you Milwaukee fans out there make sure to invest in a couple LARGE high output batteries for this tool, it's a lifesaver on long jobs. x2 6amphr high output seemed to work great, I would be able to drain one while the other charged and almost could keep up.
@@AldenPez Sorry for the late reply. I used self-feed forstner bits of various sizes with an 18" extension. 2 9/16 to 3 5/8 bits were probably the fastest for material removal. The Makita drill can handle bigger bits but the feed screws are too small and snap too easily. The 2 cutting blade type work best and try to keep only 2/3 to 3/4 of the bit in the wood. This let's you cut faster and helps avoid getting the bit bound up in a hole.
If you start having to fight to get the bits to dig in, stop and sharpen. I found out that my 1 big tree was actually 2 smaller trees squished together with lots of sand and rocks. Dulled the blades really fast.
The 2 holes are there to attach a drink holder.
I would like to buy a right angle drill for the specific purpose of driving a 6” (154mm) earth auger to drill fence post holes. I am already on the Milwaukee M18 platform and would therefore like to buy the M18 2809-20 (what you showed in your video). Do you think that the 2809 has adequate torque, etc. to drive a 6” earth auger? To be clear, I’m okay with the Milwaukee being inferior to its Makita (or other brand/model) competitor. I just need the Milwaukee to be adequate for the job as I want to stay on the Milwaukee M18 battery platform. Thanks
Another great test! For pure grunt, the Makitas obviously win. The clutch on the Milwaukee is a wrist saver, but will probably be a big problem with an earth auger. I have the Gen 1 Super-Hawg and it's little brother. With those big bits, it takes a few holes practice to really dial in the feel of when the tool will cut out or the clutch engages. Once you have that down, it's pretty easy to keep the tool cutting. I haven't used it with a hole saw that big, but I have used a 6 inch hole saw to cut 2 holes through an old growth 8x12 beam in a house built in the late 1800s for pvc vents on a big high efficiency furnace. Had to go until the bit bottomed out, chip out the cookie, lather rinse repeat. It took a full 12ah battery but it never cut out. The clutch will engage with self feed bits if you hit a hard knot or nail when going for speed. But that's a good thing, especially when you are on a ladder. It's really amazing what these tools can do running on batteries. I haven't used a corded handheld tool in years now. I don't miss them a bit.
That Milwaukee is pretty good for a single 18 volt platform. My experience is limited with Milwaukee, only mains powered tools and they certainly run hotter and are no where near as durable as a Makita. That said for a right angled drill the tell is how stable the chuck is after a bit of use. Using the auger and leaning side to side will pretty quickly make the chuck wobbly. Not a big deal for most things unless you are trying to drill a hole for a deep thread in steel and then it makes all the difference. The XGT already looked like it was loosening up couldn't see any of that in the red brand but it didn't have a handle worth using. I have made a fixture for mine that I can apply drilling pressure with a screw jack in tight places. My 1st gen LXT will still do a 12mm hole no pilot and it is parallel enough for a good thread .
That is why I still use my plugged milwaukee tried the cordless hawg wasn't as powerful plugged hawg still going strong 20yrs
These tools are insane. Lots of power.
Damn! I wish I needed one of these! Because I definitely want one.
You can’t go wrong with any of these, the 18x2 is great, never overheats, is balanced even though a bit big in the hips, decent on battery life and the handle is superb although a bit bulky is some spots. Great tool nonetheless, I’ll get the 40v only if this one kicks the bucket….. which will probably be never
Those of us invested in LTX18 platform, I see no reason to consider jumping to 40V. We have 18 batteries between 2 crews, 3 of these drills, 2 X2 skilsaws and 2 compound miters. It would cost too much and for what benefit? My guys love the X2 drill, I as well. It’s got the power of the old Hole Hawg yet I’m not worried of injuries & liability from guys having power cords snaking all over jobsite.
I would add for this test, I don’t think these tools are ever operated in high speed gear. I can guarantee if they are drilling w/1-1/2” spade, they are using std Hilti drill, not a massive rt angle drill. We use rt angle drill for longer auger bits and big speed bits roughing in plumbing and some electrical
@@MichaelM-to4sg totally agree! Love all my 18 volt makita tools. But, but, the only 40 volt makita i want is the miter saw. So nice, fixed a lot of the 36 volt miter saw issues. Too handle, shadow light, better up front bevel adjustment etc. but super expensive
It's interesting because in New Zealand at least the Makita's are cheaper and seem a lot more powerful + made in Japan.
Luckily I don't have to worry about choosing which one to buy because I can't afford any of them
There's yellow in the thumbnail... but no yellow in the video... (aside from a battery/charger in the background) I was excited to see if dewalt actually sells a right angle drill :(
I think they sell 3 full sized right angle drills
I was hoping the Dewalt 60v Joist drill would show up on here! I have one and it is more powerful than the milwaukee but I'm curious how it compares to the Makita.
Looks like a recip in the thumbnail. We've been clickbaited! Time to rename the channel "VCG & Stuff"
Thank you for this video. Now that I've seen the size of these drills closeup, I realize they are much too large for my needs, and I will resort to a right angle drill attachment on my Milwaukee and Ridgid drills
Im a plumber and this milwaukee super hawk with high power baterrys are a beast using then since come to market 2 generation 3 years ago
Hi mate I’m thinking of buying the Milwaukee for drilling out on new build houses, could the Milwaukee handle a core hole as I know people on site use the makita for core holes but I’d prefer Milwaukee as I have the batteries for it
Test the super hawg with an auger bit in the ground please
love the viewers engagement hahahah ur wife must be confused upstairs
Just curious, was the super hawg gen 1 or gen 2. Not here to contest results or opinions, I’m personally on the M18 platform, I’m no fanboy it’s just what I got onto years ago. I just want to know if these tests were indicative of Milwaukees latest “innovation/performance” so I can decide if this is a one off tool I buy from makita should the need arise.
Another great video! 👍
It is the latest model M18FRAD2
Milwaukee can't escape the fact that it has half the voltage of the Makita tools and therefore needs twice the amperage to hit the same wattage. More amps = hotter.
Joist hook on a joist drill, brilliant.
2 holes? Rafterhook? Meatpie warmer?
@Tools & Stuff, I wonder if you have access to the Makita, Milwaukee or DeWalt mud mixer and how they are compared to these when using as earth augers.
What's the diffrence between a right angle drill and an earth auger? They look identical.
The difference is the thing at the end of the video.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL That's literally it? A handle...
Yes. And a small adapter to go in the chuck to hold the auger.
Last year I decided to buy this sort of drill. Let’s first look at the landscape:
I was upgrading from a Chinese copy of the traditional corded HoleHawg. This classic, very boxy tool had a reputation for breaking wrists. With the clone, it was something inside that broke - perhaps a good thing, as who wants a broken wrist?
Milwaukee never did make clear why you might choose a “SuperHawg” over the original HoleHawg. Nor has Milwaukee ever been clear regarding the choice of models with their various speed ranges.
Then Milwaukee came out with a money nester 7/16 hex drive impact. Perfect for driving selfeed bit - but disastrous for hole saw arbors.
So, when I needed to make holes for drain lines, I was in the market for a hog-type drill, preferably cordless.
For me, Even though I have many Makita tools, Milwaukee got the nod. I chose Milwaukee because - though Milwaukee doesn’t push it much - they sell a less powerful, single battery version. I don’t need the extra size and power of the models looked at here.
I use it strictly for hole saws. For most drilling I use an impact. For holes smaller than 1” it’s a regular 1/4” hex impact and Irwin Speedbor Max bits. Larger holes are the larger impact with Selfeed bits.
Another Milwaukee advantage is the 7-16 hex chuck. No more fumbling with a key; bit changing is a snap.
The Makita also comes in 7/16"
Yeah, i just got a super hawg brand new for 300, with quick lok, saves so much time, plus Milwaukee has got the best pex expansion tools so staying with the red makes the most sense
Hey champ, love your content great work, do you think there’s any xgt lawnmowers on the way? Wanting to buy new battery mower and have both lxt and xgt batteries platforms, everything xgt is just better hope there’s something coming
Mower not far.
I have an old dewalt hammer drill that I was using to drill holes in 1/4" steel. I mustn't've been supporting it well enough and the damn thing fucked my left arm up. For a week and a half my arm was a limp noodle and work was excruciating. It's been a couple but I get these little reminders in my wrist occasionally to lmk how jeezless powerful these little things are.. I can only imagine what these enormous machines could do to me!
Use the clutch setting on your drill! Hopefully you healed up and learned your lesson!
I am in the market for one of these drills, mostly deciding between the super hole hawg from milwaukee or the 18x2 from makita. I need one for roughing in buildings, and I am on both battery platforms, I'm just curious as to which one offers the most run time and charges the fastest and you said the 18x2 is more powerful than the milwaukee correct?
Thinking of buying....
Not sure, what to buy ...
silly question probably but did you just remove the whole auger handle assembly from the Makita drills?
I was looking for the blurred dewalt n didn't see it. Not sure if I'm crazy or I smoked my lunch. I've been using the superhog for a while. I can def lean on it and bog the hawg, but I can get it in between studs a lot easier than the makita, in low gear I've never been able to bog the hawg. Itll go through a 12ah pretty quick considering the same battery on my circ saw lasts days but I'm still happy with my choice to keep bleeding red
I just use my little dhp485 for 190mm holesaws...
The chuck does have 8mm radial play now though.
I have the Gen 1 Hole Hawg which is the smaller one and I know other plumbers who have the Super Hawg have problems drilling holes that I don't have. Also I don't like using fortsner bits as they vary in performance and efficiency constantly. And they are expensive and time consuming in trying to maintain sharp. I always find hidden nails when drilling holes and those nails will mess up the forstner bits immediately. That's why I only use hole saws when installing the waste systen. Maybe it's a Super Hawg thing?
I don't really see the point of angle drills any more. The brushless motor saves on the length and the XGT impact drives those threaded spades rapidly through joists, which is the only place I used to need an angle drill. The XGT combi handles those big hole saws really well. Great vid as usual though to show them off. Cheers
If you're drilling with large bits that frequently bind up you'll be very glad you have the long body of the right angle drill. The top of the line hammer drills can handle maybe 70% of the bits that right angles can, but they are miserable when they bind up. They can even break your wrist if you don't let go fast enough.
Do you think the XGT version would struggle with 6inch whole saw bits? I've killed 5 corded drills drilling holes for drain pipes in plywood.
Watch the video.
I'm not sure I saw it mentioned, but the Makita website states the 40V has a torque limiting clutch while the 18Vx2 does not. I noticed the Milwaukee hitting the clutch during the drilling but not the Makitas.
Did you notice any difference between the Makitas when they got bound up?
They both have torque limiters.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL That's good to know. Makita are usually pretty good with their specs. Now I guess I shall patiently wait for you to reveal that pixely yellow thing and how it compares...
The two holes are for a rafter hook
Do you think for this tool the keyed chuck is better to buy then the keyless 7/16 quick release chuck?
Yes. Because you can put anything in a 3 jaw chuck.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Good point
Just imagine if milwaukee come out with a 40v platform. Or even just lithium pouch battery 🤔
Milwaukee have too much power for their bodies. The break apart in your hand.
Will still need replacing in six months.
Milwaukee goofed. They didn’t make the MX batteries big enough. Had they gone bigger, say 90 or 120v, they could have introduced a smaller form factor higher volt battery platform i between the two.
@@RaggedsEdge exactly, mx fuel is basically an oversized DeWalt Flexvolt competitor or oversized Makita xgt competitor. Stupid idea. MX fuel is a dud and the only way it'll survive is if fanboys/contractors keep buying it
milwaukee may have the most powerful tools but they just don't last. you know its true 👍🎣🎣🎣
Explain
@@brynnond.6952 Well they just don't last the reliability of them aren't great most of the people I'm working with doing form work. So they are getting a lot of use the Milwaukee gear seam to break more often then the makita.. I've seen it first hand im not just making up bullshit for the hell of it..👌
Never had a problem with any of my fuel tools for years, I’m sure they have a few stinkers out there but I’m a mechanic and the tools I use for that line of work have held up well.
I like Makita but the don’t offer much in the states and of what they do they never have any deals so it’s hard to justify paying twice the price for the same tool. Being Makita is more popular in Oceanic regions it’s probably more obtainable to get them at more reasonable prices.
@@HardwareHank02 That is interesting maybe it all depends on how much and how hard you use the tool i guess..
Makita is great but Milwaukee still makes long lasting tools that are usually less money. If they ever break on me though I’ll certainly be purchasing more Makita tools to try out for a bit. Love the ergonomics of most of their tools.
Hello do all 3 drills have clutches
For the leg bar when used as an earth auger
Seem like the XGT had more power at higher speed.
Sure did.
I hate the power switch on the Makita. I have other tools that have that and it is a pain, since the tool turns off after 20 seconds of non use and then I have to press the power button again and again. I'm lined up, ready to go, and.... nothing. power went off again.
Stays on for about 5 minutes.
Bolt holes are to attach it to your bar for stirring ya drinks? :D
Does Makita have the jam safety feature?
Yes.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Thank you. 😊
Tool & stuff, you tricked me. I thought I was going to see makita. Milwaukee and dewalt 😢
Please add dewalt to the mix, might give 40v a challenge.
Exactly this. The DCD470 from DeWalt. I need to make a decision but I need a Tools & Stuff video to help me decide first 😅
@@Muscon01 the 470/471 beats the super hawg. Haven’t run it against a makita.
Keep up but never last as long as the makita like All dewalt. Well newer stuff anyways. Build quality in hand alone keeps me away from dewalt

Kiwi
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL sorry for the mistake. They're pretty decent folks too though lol
That's OK. You Canadians always get it wrong.
Nothing like comparing Apples to a Mango. But as far as brands go I’m blessed to own both Makita and Milwaukee platforms among 3 others. Makita js by far normally builds the more quality tool with the most features! Milwaukee’s are decent and usually have more power in some tool applications but I’ve had more tool and also battery failures. But still love them both, along with Bosch, Hilti and Metabo
how are these compared to the dewalt DCD471? I wonder...
Dewalt one is literally twice as much torque
No offence at all great video but……. I can never find any reviews on hard wood. I would with solid oak and exotic hardwood beams in my industry repairing ships jetty’s and can never for the life of me find any tests in hardwood. Would love to start seeing some hardwood reviews from creators.
What amperage does the various xgt packs run? 20a i presume.. Now im no genius, but wouldnt the x2 platform run 40a?
no the amperage would be the same as they're both 36v. some xgt batteries have the newer cells so that is where the extra power comes from
The cells used in the 2170 xgt batteries can theoretically do 35 to 40 amps continuous
Big holes in wood = use an impact wrench with a hole saw
No.

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Guffaw! Hope you didn't take it as an insult.
Ok the question is, will Makita make one XGT x2? I know they are doing that with some hammer drills.
Rotary Hammers... Not hammer drills
@@travisjazzbo3490 yes you are correct. I interchange the terms all the time. (Wrongly so, I know). I just never think of hammer drills as something I would use to make holes in masonry unless I’m too lazy to go to the truck. So in my mind, rotary hammers and hammer drills are the same thing. Again, I know that’s wrong.
@@RaggedsEdge 😎 Definitely not uncommon as you said
Given the shortness of the Makita 486 combi drill, would you really need a right angled drill rather than brushless combi . These right angles drills seem heavy and cumbersome.

Milwaukee super hawg is a very overrated tool. It jams up constantly and I hate Milwaukee.
how well do the Makita drills work using diamond core bits in comparison to the Dewalt angled core drill?
So, where is dewalt?
Now you need to compare to De Walt
MAKITA 18V BABY IS ALL IM HEARING LALALALA

Where is the Dewalt that is in the thumbnail of the video?
not sure why you didn't match the Milwaukee against the Makita XAD05Z 18v vs 18v
Well they do cost the same, at least in the US the kits are $699
Because it wasn't a video about the Milwaukee. Would have been a somewhat pointless Makita 40v review... without the 40v tool...
It is pretty clear the Milwaukee would have outperformed a single 18V tool by any manufacturer. It really was a good comparison to the X2 and 40V!
That looks like their auger

The cut outs at high speed had nothing to do with safety features.
The super hawg with the 7/16 Collett quick release is a lot better than that truck brother and Makita doesn’t make that
Makita DO make a 40v 7/16 Collet actually.
