The audience song selections were perfect. They show off everything he's good at. Strong piano, impeccable lyrical style, somewhat obscure. Love it. I would have added a suggestion for selfless, cold, composed.
I love this guy. I feel theres something about him that anyone could understand. Also love his disheveled look and welcome personality and the respect from everyone is unwavering
If you have this a thumbs down, I don't want to know you... Ben Folds offers insight and a a level of introspection that I've rarely heard from any other artist
I've been listening to Rockin The Suburbs in the car this week. His stories are breathtaking, sad and brilliant. "Carrying Kathy" "Still Fighting It" and "Not The Same" are just stunning.
The late 80s early 90s Greensboro/UNCG band scene was very vibrant. It produced a number of artists. Ben is certainly at the top of the mountain, but a lot of creative souls. The stories that Duck Key studios could tell!
I love how Ben clarified what the question was about artists from North Carolina. I'm from Scotland and maybe I picked up the premise of the question incorrectly, but Ben seemed like he knew what the interviewer meant and wanted him to make it more clear for people outwith the states. Such a cool interviewee.
Such a cool career he’s had. He recognized he was past the peak at 33, so he did other things that were equally cool. And had the talent to do it really well. Think of how many artists either stay in their lane far longer than they should or try to venture off into other directions and disappear.
I pulled this interview up because I just read Ben Folds' memoir and loved it. It has the same thoughtful inspiring feel as this interview and he narrates the audiobook himself. Highly recommend.
I saw Ben at Cat's Cradle (you must know where that is) on his tour to support Rockin the Suburbs. Both Darren and Robert performed, so it was basically BF5 doing the current album plus all of their best. One of my best concerts ever...
Thats interesting that Ben talked about having memories of 2 years old and playing records all day because that echoes a similar experience I had, and like him I remember the floor plan, where we put the christmas tree, everything. My earliest memories are from almost exactly 2 years old, when my sister was a few months old, and I accidentally dropped her, trying to pick her up. At that time, I also remember figuring out how to load 8 tracks in my dad's stereo, and listening to The Beach Boys over and over. Some of my earliest memories, are of playing 8 tracks, and listening to music with my dad.
I tell ya...someone saying they are not a singer, but able to hit those insane high notes on Satan is My Master astounds me (I think that is the song on NBP I am thinking of).
Ive always thought, would love him to do .. scenes from an Italian restaurant, can imagine it would be epic .. except perhaps just for fun he does scenes from a Turkish, indian, vegan etc.
Interesting, the conversation about the Sing Off...I remember being slightly pissed about his reaction to Sonos, a favorite acapella group of mine...but they were just not made for that show.
I had to slow it down to 0.25x but this is it: It starts with an E and G together, with a grace note E flat right before the chord. After that, it's one note at a time descending: C, B flat, G, G flat, F, F again, C So it's one chord plus seven notes, then all of that is just repeated in each octave going down. Not sure the best fingering though, wish the camera was showing his hands when he explained it!
www.deezer.com/en/album/6511817 Here it is. This guy BLATANTLY stole Ben’s music and rewrote lyrics in a different language. He should be thrown in jail for fraud.
@@oranjuly I listened to it and I didn't hear anything libelous although the first track sure sounds like a Ben Folds song. I didn't hear all the songs all the way through though.
I’ll watch anything Ben does. It’s rarely anything but a fascinating conversation when he gives an interview. That said... holy crap, Google. You’re Google! Why would you put your name on something this poorly produced? Is this series someone’s pet project? Hire a team for chrissakes. Was there even an audio engineer? Why was Ben’s mic completely blown out during “Army”... like… No one ever fixed it. That’s inexcusable. I won’t even mention the lighting or the direction or the fact that no one even bothered to take a lint roller to the velvet curtain and I certainly won’t talk about how you should maybe find someone slightly less awkward to host the interview. It’s just a bummer when you use the Google name to pull in a brilliant artist of this caliber and then the whole thing looks like you dropped about 50 bucks on it.
@@JorfdansFilms1 correct, tried to find Tom's initial tweet but it looks like he's deleted it since. the song was Phone in the Pool and it was compared to "perfect" by Rob Cantor
crappy interviewer. North Carolina has MANY main stream artists....especially in the jazz realm...John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone. Ben takes it easy on this guy
Seriously, this guy is killing me...duh fuq is wrong with him? Hope this guy is an uncultured software engineer...but sadly, this is probably Google's "Media Ambassador" or some shit.
Ben Folds made me wanna play piano and my life has been significantly better ever since. Thank you, Ben
Same here man! He literally changed the course of my life, wouldn't have it any other way

Ben Folds. One of earths absolute gems.

Wow. To whomever suggested Landed. Thank you for that. That's my new favorite recording of that song. So raw. I absolutely loved it.

I admire this man so much for his amazing music
That 3rd album is actually his greatest work.
remi moses Reinhold Messner FTW
100%
Hated it at first but the more I listened the more I loved it. Definitely a top album.
14:52 thought for a second that the dude was about to ask Ben Folds if he thought Rockin' the Suburbs was reponsible for 9/11
Hahah same
Hmm...now this is a 9/11 conspiracy theory I could subscribe to.
Same lmao
Neil Gaiman and Ben Folds collaborating would be incredible, bring in Tori Amos and Regina Spektor too
with a sprinkling of Sara Bareilles
12:00 He starts talking about his drama with TomSka lol - glad I found this

Neil Gaiman and Folds is a dream.

I'm surprised people knew who he was. I thought I was alone.
when you're the 69th like on a Ben Folds video. Nice.

I was hoping he would say regina spektor was his favorite to work with
I know nothing other then “rock this bitch” about Ben but this man is a genius
Can someone figure out what he's playing around 1:07:00 when he's explaining that riff?
I don’t think it’s anything specific, just a riff of his own. I found it really interesting also, especially with his story.
It’s a standard blues bass line
I had to slow it down to 0.25x but this is it:
It starts with an E and G together, with a grace note E flat right before the chord.

Isn't Bruce Hornsby a NC guy?
Anyone know the Brazilian artist that he is referencing in terms of plagiarism?
In wich part?

Funny he talks about being able to let people know they are flat or sharp because he is flat so much. But he holds a piano.
cual es la cancion que le fusilaron en brazil a ben folds??
Does anyone know the english comedian who tried to call ben out?
TomSka
would have been nice to know what ben's more immediate music plans are other than "Maybe i will do a musical sometime"
Wow, to insinuate that music originating in North Carolina is mostly Bluegrass and Country is sadly misinformed.
