    The option for the mirrors when folding them on my M3 through a narrow bridge, tight roads with cars parked on both sides of the road, Starbucks drive-thru: ‘Always fold at this location?’ And there doesn’t seem to be any limit on the number of locations that the car remembers. Flippin’ brilliant!

      wow. so you have literally told the car to fold in specific places. That’s a great idea. I’ll have to try it

      @@TeslaTorque Yep, tap the car icon on the display to access the option to ‘fold mirrors’. When you fold the mirrors, another option appears in feint blue font offering to ‘always fold at this location?’ We seem to have many rather narrow streets here in Cheltenham and various Cotswold villages so I’ve set the option for loads of different locations plus the Starbucks, McDonalds and KFC drive throughs of course.

    My Number 1 ‘thing’ on our Tesla Model 3? Pre-conditioning! The cabin is warm to pre-selected temperature, whichever seats you and your passengers will be using are warm plus front and rear screens clear - before we need to drive. Similarly the car will be cool to preselected temperature in summer. What makes this even more awesome is that you have the choice of switching on pre-conditioning remotely from the app on your cell phone or setting pre-conditioning to turn on at a scheduled time every morning, evening or whenever you like. So difficult not to look smug driving off immediately while my neighbours are scraping ice off their windscreens.

  • @Macfilos

    Great assessment and I can't fault your logic. I've now had two EVs and have just ordered a Model 3 with a March 1 delivery date. Just over a year ago I ordered and then cancelled the Model 3 twice. My main concern was the lack of a speedo in front of the driver. In the end I bought a Jaguar I-Pace, an excellent car and probably better in some ways than the Tesla, and it did have a HUD which was absolutely brilliant. However, after experiencing the indifferent charging infrastructure, I sold up and ordered the Tesla. For 2021 Jaguar introduced a completely new infotainment system (badly needed, by the way) and my car, from 2019, was left high and dry, never to be updated.
    Now I totally understand Tesla's login in adoption of soft controls. Wishing for more physical buttons and knobs is akin to the arguments used against the iPhone when it was introduced in 2007. No one would give up their Blackberries with physical keyboards. But they did, and I think the same will go for cars, once people overcome their prejudice. Sure, I would like a HUD with navigation display, as you rightly point out, but I accept what's on offer and will try to adapt. The Model 3 is a glimpse into the future. And did I mention Superchargers? After a year with the I-Pace, I realise that the Tesla is "road trip" ready. The Jaguar and all non-Teslas are not.
    Keep up the good work; this is one of the best Tesla channels on RUclips.
    Mike

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад +1

      Cheers Mike. I mentioned this in my review video I think. I firmly believe Tesla to be the Apple of the car world. Like you said, Apple came in and re-thought the phone, others scoffed at the ideas, then spent years trying to catch up when they realised Apple had it right. A lot of mainstream phone companies disappeared, I think unfortunately that might be true in the car world. Going forward I see Tesla building a strong Eco-system of app sales for their cars, subscription services and income streams from a variety of areas, not just the initial car sale. The supercharger network, is very good, if they open that up again another income stream and if more expensive to non-testa owners, helps people think in the long run, better off switching.
      Tesla have the bonus of they don't do things because that's the way it's always been done, as they never did it before. Legacy automakers have a lot of organisational culture to change, which is difficult to overcome.

    • @Macfilos
      @Macfilos 3 года назад

      @@TeslaTorque I totally agree with all this. I too believe Tesla is the Apple of the car world.
      As an aside, I understand from chatting to customer support that my new Model 3, with a March 1 delivery date, is part of the first consignment of right-hand-drive cars to arrive from Shanghai. Apparently, all RHD cars are now going to be made there. Even more like an iPhone-Designed in California, Made in China. I will be interested to see how the car compares with California-made M3s, particularly on panel fit and paint quality. I believe the MIC cars have a heated steering wheel and a revised front door panel, but there could be other minor changes. I assume the battery pack (at least on the Long Range I ordered) will be the same as that in the US models.

      @@TeslaTorque I think this thread is great. One thing though- do we really want to sacrifice the ‘exclusivity’ feeling pulling into a Supercharger point by allowing other EV’s access, even if they pay? If this were the case, would there be more congestion at these points with longer queues waiting for a stand which then impacts on Tesla owners..? The Tesla network infrastructure was the main USP for me…(aside from the brilliant car of course!)

    Good video.
    Sadly with the latest interface you have even LESS space for Sat Nav. Would be good for you to do a video of things that it should have but doesn’t. I’ll start you off:
    1. No blind spot monitoring (looking at the screen to see grey blocks around you isn’t a substitute).
    2. No Android Auto/Apple Car Play.
    3. No surround view cameras - three cameras on screen is not a substitute.
    4. No guide lines on rear view camera.
    5. No recognition of EVERY speed limit signs - only those on so-called major roads.
    Most of the above are on cars costing much, much less and have been for some time.
    Also, Tesla owners learn very quickly to carry a key card with them because the Bluetooth phone connection is not 100% reliable. You are among the exceptions if it’s worked 100% for you and if the phone battery goes flat, you’re stuffed.

      I have got the follow up of 5 things that don’t make sense planned, but might have to make it 10 with your list now 😂
      I think I must have been lucky with the phone. The actual phone connection when speaking can be temperamental, but lock. Works every time. I have back up of friends with it and iPad. So they could start it if need be from anywhere.
      Good list though....watch this space 😬

      There are guidelines on the rear view camera display when reversing. Two of them in white. They’re just not ideally positioned to indicate exactly where the edges of the car (i.e. your rims) are. You sort of have to guess. I think that explains why so many Tesla owners park so badly in reverse at the superchargers. The guidelines on the display in our other car, a Ford Focus Titanium, put those to shame in our Model 3. Guidelines coloured red yellow and green in the Ford show near exact position of the edges of the car while another two lines in white show exactly where you are steering and a broken line in black indicates the centre of the car.
      And where is the ‘birds eye’ display when parking? My sister has that on the display in her BMW when she parks. You’d think the Tesla would have a similar ‘birds eye’ display with all those cameras wouldn’t you? At least there’s hope! A tweet to Elon on Twitter should do it! Next Over-The-Air software update!

    I’m getting my M3SRP at the end of March, am nervous about using airport parking when I fly to Finland in July for 3 weeks. I’m thinking I’m going to have to be specific about my requirements with the company I choose. What are your thoughts on this situation? What advice could you give please?

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад

      Sorry to took so long to reply, I think if you can aim to leave it near fully charged when you leave it there you will have no problems. It's expected to lose about 1% a day, so in theory you are only looking at 21% drop in 3 weeks. If you use a service that charges your car when you return, no problem, as it can get down to 20% and you'll still be able to drive home, as the company will charge it. Just make sure you have over 50% when you leave it and I don't think you'll need to worry. The more you have the better piece of mind. Key thing is make sure you don't have any third party apps that access it and keep the Model 3 from going into a deep sleep, and don't be tempted to check the app to wake it up all the time, as again that will lead to more battery drain. Hope that gives you a bit of peace of mind

      I did get ceramic coating, and I'm glad I did. Even with that its picking up chips. Probably PPF would be the better option to protect the paint work, as I think that's what its more aimed at, but I was going for easy clean and shiny look 😂, with a bit of extra protection. On the upside, but the looks of things the Berlin plant is going to sort out all the paint issues, which I appreciate won't sort out your car, but going forward that's a great thing, as its a real problem.

      Forgot to say that on most of the cars we worked on, the customers had disabled it, similarly I suspects that most Tesla owners don’t use it as it rather undoes the advantage of keyless entry, if you’re going to have to type your pin, you’d probably be quicker having an actual key

    The raised lump in the back of the car was a legacy is for the drive shaft for a rear wheel cars which is still there on front wheel drive cars as a stiffening component for the chassis of the car and is now sometimes used for the exhaust pipe - but sometimes it is there for nothing, cos that is how they make cars.
    The auto-update is nice for the things you don't know about. Legacy car manufactures charge anything up to £1000 for a sat-nav update (Audi...). This goes for the key too, you can get a replacement for £20 from Tesla, while some manufactures (fiat) charged up to £1500 for the coded key. There is a hidden issue here, the legacy manufactures used a old style security system with rolling encryption keys - and these can roll out of sync if you accidently press the key fob about 20-100 times outside the range of the car (maybe a few years). You then need to recode it at £100's - that's you WV group. The Tesla security system does not do this, it uses the same technology banks use for touch and go credit cards and is significantly more secure than the rolling key used by key-fobs - remember you can capture the key-fob signal/amplify and open/start your ICE car - normal way of stealing a car these days.
    1) Mobile car servicing
    2) No sales people at the Tesla service centre - trying to sell you a new car when all you want is them to fix your current one.
    3) No spam through your letter box cos they know you need a MOT - so they might as well tell you you are a VIP and should visit their show room and buy a new car with lots of advertising.
    4) Heating my car before I get into it. (Yes I know you can go out and start an ICE car and go back in doors, and some ICE cars have remote start), but this is pretty much universal on EV's now. Second like related to this, even if I get into the car without a pre-heat - the heating works immediately, I don't have to wait for the engine to warm up first.

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 года назад

      I wanted to say drive shaft, in fact I did to start off with as that's what I always thought was there. But then I thought that makes no sense as the engine is in the front and they are front wheel drive 😂. That proves the point even more then I think with legacy automakers being lazy. Sounds like the lump serves very little purpose. Good knowledge on the car keys, I'd forgotten about the cost to replace car keys, I was terrible at losing them. My Tesla key is kept in a faraday cage in the kitchen....I mean lounge....I mean bedroom, don't break in!! 👀
      Not that you could do anything as I have pin to drive 👌🏻
      Good other points though, I hate sales people (no offence sales people out there). I like to make my own decisions based on my own research, and I've never found anyone trying to push stuff on me with Tesla, in fact normally, like the service, pretty much steering me away from it.

    • @Tom55data

      @@TeslaTorque Reminds me of another one. If some steals your car, you can tell the police exactly where it is/where it is driving. It comes with its own tracker device you spend £1000's for in any other car.
      For the OCD out there, I can check if my car is locked from anywhere in the world. I can also open the car and then lock it again for someone else from anywhere in the world.
      Just found another one today- my wife was sat in the car and I walked off to get some building materials, but the car did not auto-lock as it knew there was someone in the passenger seat. How many of us have been roasted by out better half for walking away with the car key and locking them in the car.... followed by the alarm going off ;)

    I heard the floor is slightly raised to accommodate the battery pack which can annoy the long legged folk in the back! I'd use my frunk for VERY little!! Coming from a very basic 17 year old car, it had no features, let alone buttons!! Pin2drive and Pin2glovebox are genius!! I actually will prefer using the card key and would always have one on me. I expected you to mention the dashcam, should have made it a top 6 or top 7! When I go to collect my car I'm gonna take an old Nokia 3310 and see how they react!

      Yeah, I forgot the dash cam to be fair, someone else mentioned that and its a very good point should have made it in there. I think why I didn't is because I was thinking things that other car manufacturers could do, but haven't, and all the cameras are pretty unique to Tesla, so not everyone could do it. but it definitely makes sense to, so did sentry mode as well.
      Seriously, try the phone out, you have to get the key out your pocket or wallet and put it on the side of the car ( I don't think it works like a normal contactless key - I maybe wrong as genuinely, never used it). As I have a smart lock and use Apple Pay, I only go out with my phone, rarely a wallet and defo no keys. Yep, I'm screwed when it breaks - I just can't wait till I can get it all on my watch. Then I leave my phone at home :)

To be fair I've got one of those phone cases that has a couple of card slots so it wouldn't be any more of a faff!! I might actually be the least "tech" person to actually buy a Tesla!! Pin to drive on other cars would sure be a good idea (I think some Renaults had this option at some point) but with a physical keypad. Also where done on the screen there should be a backup that can be done via the phone. Take golfs (mk7 at least) the screen tends to go bonkers in very cold weather and sometimes its non responsive (common problem) . Time will tell with the tesla but if such thing was to happen on a regular basis out of warranty, there would most probably be a recall since it fundamental to the cars operation.

      I think its got better since you can now access wipers from the main screen on a single button. Volume is on the scroll wheel, so that's easy enough, but can see that a simple swipe up on the stalk was easy for a wiper than finding a button. The auto function is pretty reliable now to be fair though. I think that's why the buttons are not as important, most of it is automatic, so you don't have to turn things on

      I think that is where other EV manufacturers have gone, with the front wheels be right near the front of the car. Which has left little space for a frunk. But as Richard said, it leaves little space for a crumple zone. There are images of Teslas driving head on into posts and it wraps around the front end with no intrusion into the cabin on the Tesla which is why safety is so high. I think it allows more scope for aerodynamics as well, to improve efficiency, so there are benefits to having a bit of a longer front end. But if the i3 can have a frunk, I'm sure the other smaller EVs could have done it too

    Don’t agree with #3 Buttons, I’m afraid. Some things in the car you rarely change (mirrors, seats), but others you tend to change frequently AND while driving (heating, ventilation, volume), and so to have easily-accessible physical buttons is quicker and safer than trying to navigate through a number of screens to change.

      @@jsouto77 We probably agree to differ. In my experience, we tend to change the heat levels, direction and strength of the system fairly regularly, depending on the climate and our own body temperatures, so I agree with a number of other RUclips car reviewers who also say that physical and easily-changed controls for the heating is just better, and imho safer, as you’re not having to divert attention off the road.

      See you are same as a few people I’ve spoke to who change the ventilation often. I never touch it so it doesn’t bother me. Yep, I'd agree the Tesla range hasn't changed much, but its market share didn't really kick off till 2017. Between the data ranges, I'd say the smaller range models had the greater market share for the majority of the time. Tesla got over 50% market share in 2017, prior to that it was around 30% or below, either way it would be good to see some up to date data as think things have changed quite a bit.

      Glad that BMW had pin to drive in 1998, any ideas why it wasn't continued? Proves the point, it could be on every car, seems like such a good idea? Every car I've driven from Skoda, Vauxhall, Ford, Volvo, BMW, Nissan, Fiat to name a few don't seem to have it or at least isn't advertised or highlighted?
      You are right, I did limited research, because the video was about things that made sense that I wasn't aware of was in the mainstream, and wondered why? As I mentioned, I wasn't making claims Tesla invented these, I just didn't know they were a thing before I got my Tesla and these things I think should be adopted on every car.
