This is an immensely powerful scene. Pope is wrestling with himself here, the good man and the monster battling. All we know for certain is that he makes a decision at the end but we don't know what it is, we can only speculate because he's interrupted before anything happens. Maybe he was going to walk away or maybe not. Does that interruption tip him into being the monster? Ben Mendelsohn is totally unreadable throughout this, he's an actor of prodigious talent and adds something to every film he's in. And this film itself boasts several fantastic actors with Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton and Jackie Weaver among them.
He's terrifying. Out of context, it seems like he's maybe a pervert. But in the context of the film and knowing what happens, good God - he's a monster. This movie made me a fan of him, Jackie Weaver, and Joel Edgerton.
Yep. This film is awesome. Theres another similar crime related film called Cedar Boys that I think deserves praise. Also a movie called Candy which stars Heath Ledger in one of his had films ever made. It only came out about a year and a half before he died and in the film he plays an opiate/heroin addict which makes it all the more eerie giving the way he died from opiates and he also went to rehab for opiate/heroin addiction.
Ben Mendelsohn is one of our national treasures, Bloodline, Place Beyond The Pines, Star Wars, soon to be Captain Marvel, and another Aussie one, if you havent seen it please do - Idiot Box. we love him.
Actually, we make a lot. The problem is they rarely get seen beyond festivals. However, that is changing since a lot of them end up on streaming services eventually. Do you also know most Marvel movies get made here now?
@@dav00sshe was utterly wasted in Captain Marvel. Loved him in The Dark Knight Rises as John Daggett though. Favourite role of his is still Gosling’s partner in crime/best friend in The Place Beyond the Pines.
This is the point in the movie where my perception of Pope changed, prior to this scene I thought he was a bit of a funny, down on his luck guy, I kinda felt sorry for him, but this scene showed that he was a sociopath.
This was the most memorable scene to me in a movie filled with memorable scenes. I picked this movie up some years ago after watching the Rover and reading the recommendations on the back about Animal Kingdom. Such a great movie. The TV show was pretty good too
i cant help but think this is the reason Ryan Reynolds used this air supply song in DP 2, Ben was his Co-Star previously and i know actors watch each others movies. i don't know i just imagine him watching this and being moved and thinking about using this song somewhere.
This scene is cinematic perfection. His friend just died yet he is consumed with a dangerous uncontrollable lust (note his heavy breathing and menacing stare). for his nephews sleeping 17 year old girlfriend, showing what a callous impulsive driven psychopath he is. The song resonates perfectly, pope is all out of love (or perhaps never had it). The song being from the 80's is also a hint at the era these events took place in. A truly menacing haunting but perfect scene.
It was based on events from the 80's, but it wasn't set there. The flatscreen tv in this scene is a good indicator of that. The cars and phones they use too are from recent times.
smh nothing in this film indicated he had a lust for her, his heavy breathing is because his mad as hell because she knows to much and is a potential rat. Which is why he killed her.
I don't know why but I always got the vibe that he was impotent. The way this scene is composed, scored & acted it gives off a far more resonating and complicated energy than simply "he wants to kill her" or "he wants to rape her."
I was blessed to be able to talk to Ben about this scene, back when the film came out. I compared its power to that very scene in Taxi Driver. He wrote me a note the next day which of course I saved.
Oh my god did that scene creep me out. Like 1000 times more so than when the similar thing in the series happened with different actor who was alright but no where on that level of acting. i only saw parts of season 1 and am not sure i wanna invest that much time into a show i never cared about but it does seem pretty decent.
Eerie foreshadowing, Pope being not only all out of love, but ready to take it away from everyone else. The cast uses these long silent shots like the pros they are, even novice James Frecheville.
Epic film 👍 Ben Mendelssohn f'#king top actor, great in Killing them softly as well. About a million times better than that lame yank tv series 😄 👍

Yet, that stupid, stupid teenage girl kept going over there, even after her boyfriend told her not to go over there. She had no business hanging around those people.
Ben Mendelsohn could read the phone book and make it riveting. Terrific actor. His performance in this film is off the scale.

Greatest scene in the movie. I love that menacing soundtrack coming through just barely audible.
It is truly brilliant.
Love love love this film. Ben Mendelsohn is so menacing in this role especially in this scene

How the hell Ben Mendelsohn did not get atleast an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Pope is beyond me!
@Reginald Wilson Supporting Oscar really deserved
I think the Americans didn't realise he was acting.
I can’t ever listen to this song and not think about this scene. Ben is so menacing here!!!
He didn't blinking, the role of disturbed and sick mind was professionally played, bravo 👍
This film, especially this scene has helped me so much as a filmmaker.
This film is utterly outstanding!!Brilliant script, perfect acting!
Great movie with this incredible scene. I remember watching this scene for the first time and getting goosebumps thinking to myself: "Wow!"
One of the best use of music I've ever seen in a film
he is just vibing
Powerfull scene(one of many). What an incredible film this is, very intelligently constructed.
Underrated? It won Sundance and had standing ovations at Canne that year.
@@te22a True 😉 I shall ammend my original comment accordingly.
You Aussies don't seem to make many movies but when you do they are a force to be reckoned with.

I will never ever hear this song the same way again, I swear!
never had a clinical psycho stare at you when you sleep?
Ben Mendelsohn's performance brilliantly depicts how unreachable and dangerous Pope is scene after scene without having to say a word.
I like the soundtrack's swelling underneath the song. Very effective.
Greatest silent acting ever period. For loneliness can trully kill a man, or make him want to kill !!
Chilling watching Pope and knowing what he does next
Make's grown man in his 50 's shed a tear this scene, dealing with a recent break up and dealing with such loneliness. !
One of the best crime / ganster movies of all time. On the level of Goodfellas.
The movie is better than the tv series
Jason Paulin agree 💯
Well yeah, the movie has Edgerton, Mendelsohn, and Pearce
That is for damn sure!
I mean of course. But that doesn't make the show bad. This movie is a rare example of cinematic perfection

This character is based on a Melbourne criminal named Dennis allen. Just an all round great guy
Masterclass in mood.
great film
He had made his decision.
It's like watching the birth of a psychopath. Brilliant film.
Great scene with a Taxi Driver's taste(late for the sky)

Michod perfectly shot this

Similar to Wahlberg scene in boogie nights.
Yes, completely hypnotic.
i have always wondered . how did he kill her ?
Didn't he shoot her up with the ron
""She's beautiful, mate" ...... So damn sketchy.

Is Ben Mendelsohn a good actor?
Have you seen this movie, if you haven't, go watch it, it's worth it and you will get your answer too
He's a great actor
He is as good as any of the great actors out there, yes that includes deniro and pacino in their prime, Also JACK
Duh
Is the sky blue?
