The playing in this video is just ridiculous. The amount of accuracy and musicality in your “jamming state” is unreal. Also that snare sounds incredible. Time to practice!!!
Ginger Floof it's mostly pressed double stroke rolls, your drum has to be super tight to get to his speed, the weak hand has to be somewhat worked to do it
Bill Mint if your head is loose the stick won't bounce, that's all I'm saying I'm a Rock drummer and my tuning is loose so I can only do those type of pressed rolls on my snare,Tom's are not tight enough, that's all
So much control. Your technique is nice, so efficient, not over-playing or hitting unnecessarily hard. This is what I like to see. Clean, well-versed, different approaches and just pure drums no flash. That ending roll was insane as well
The sound of the kit, especially that snare, is mind boggling superb. Playing, as usual is nothing short of stellar. But man, that snare...that snare...that snare.........😰
Even, if those drums would sound like a crap, you want to buy these, after listening him playing on those drums. My kit sounds horrible. One my friend, drummer, visited me and played on my kit. Now i believe, everything is possible.
Me: "I play guitar, bass and drums...." Me after seeing this: "I play guitar and bass" Me after seeing Davy 504 "I play guitar" Me after seeing Igor Presnjakov "Fuck this i'll just listen to music from now on"
You play like the way I’ve been aspiring to play. No joke. I’m 45 years old next week and about 4 years ago I fell out of love with metal drumming and gravitated towards blues funk rock and Fell in love with John Bonham’s play. I started taking lessons in 1984 and that went on until about 1987 from there I just took what I learned and enjoyed playing drums. But now I want to reallylearn retrain my brain to play how you’re playing I love it it’s got so much rhythm and soul and funk it Hass to feel good to bust out those rhythms and I want to know what that feels like as well I guess enough practice and I’ll get there I’ve made improvements but I’m nowhere near the level that you’re at thank you for this video I will watch this one often and subscribe of course. Could you give us a breakdown of that beautiful kit? Thank you!
God damn, the way you play really makes that head sing. And don’t even get me started on that monstrous bass drum sound, this is just great all around.
Whenever I want to relax now, and want to dream of what can be done on the drums, I watch a Carter “demo”. In no way do I ever expect to have this kind of feel and skill, but that doesn’t bother me anymore. This is just pure love for and enjoyment of the task.
These double strokes is something that I wasn't able to master until today. Like I am able to play double strokes in different velocites with different techniques, but I can't smoothly transition between them. It's about time and I'd feel very honored if you would do a Carter McLean technique tutorials series :)
Killer playing... The key is always play relaxed, fluid, precise and confident... It's what's gotten me through and my rules of thumb I've learned through my lessons when I was young... This is just incredible, Cheers to you, Sir
New viewer here....am loving your channel. I so dig your chops. Your mastery of the fundamentals/the rudiments is what makes your playing so refreshing. You’ve put all of your time and energy into making a great “cake”. No need for “frosting”...esp the kind that you want to scrape off with your fork. That’s what makes your playing so dynamic and refreshing. I love your fluid style, stick control & dynamics. You had a damn good teacher and you are a damn good student and player. But then again you already know that. No need for smoke and mirrors. You have the soul and playing ability of a pure drummer. You continue to inspire me to work on my skills (rudiments!) and I’ve been dreaming for a very long time. This is great energy you are bringing forward.into the Universe.
I love Carter playing jazz. So unbelievable Smooth.i love those Elvin Jones style Fills off the ride cymbal. A little like Bill Stewart to. Carter is incredible. Luv those Beautiful sounding Ludwig's
Mastery of many dynamic levels of rhythm, tone, attack, color . . . . . Reminds me of one night back in March of 79, when I witnessed Tom Brechtlein play in Whitman's basement pub at Stony Brook SUNY. Beautiful, I hope you go really far!
Mr. Mclean your rolls are very clean!! beautiful heads ,they sound really great. But your playing is doing so much to make it sound like this! Killing vid/demo...respect.
Perfect, oustanding and beautiful snare sound! Absolutely in tune , sensitivity and protection. Your a master tunner! I can play whatever with this snare. Wow
Hey Carter, not sure you see this given the number of comment you have, but I give shot. I think your 'sound aesthetic' is one of the best I heard in a long time ... It really resonates with my ideal drum sound. It's subtle, rich, and we can hear many nuances. The drum sounds good, for sure. But all drumers know: the drumer makes 90% of the sound. Well, just I love your sound man, that's all :)
Head responsiveness and tone on the snare is amazing. Toms sound very pleasing with harder hits and resonates very well. Toms have full tone and seems to have the same responsiveness as the snare. Overall great sound my only complaint is the tuning of the base drum sounds very flat and seemed to carry the echo when the snare was on. In my honest opinion that snare sounds amazing and you are truly a technically sound drummer keep up the great work. I did notice the set as a whole did not seem to be mic’ed and thus impressed me even more. When I played it was all remo heads and even then I never had the quality I hear from these. Ps just side note I watched this on a crap iPhone and still was blown away.
Came for the drum head demo.. stayed for the drumming
Came for the heads demo, stayed for the musicianship AND the cymbals.
Same thing with me 😀... (I just came up for the drumhead demo and stayed watching and listening to the playing).
Leon Drawbridge me too
No kidding, great playing
THANKS YALL!!! Had no clue this many people would dig this. I would have dressed up if I had known ha ha
The playing in this video is just ridiculous. The amount of accuracy and musicality in your “jamming state” is unreal. Also that snare sounds incredible. Time to practice!!!
Bro he sounds even more amazing when you are in the room with him, love your content as well
Ayeeee Brandon Scott, your drumming ability is also really good, and yes it is time to practice
Word. Jazz cats are the dopeness. Ive been playing close to 20 years now and that quick jazz still blows my mind
Jesus christ your rolls are out of this world
JMM
YES!
Incredible
I read this in the wrong context and I'm now dying
JMM the rolls are the least impressive it doesn’t take much to roll his rytheme sorry for the spelling and choice of fills are amazing
Seth’s Life no the rolls are really impressive
sorry but anybody who practices a lot can do this. im not far from this and i never practice. the thing i never learned was hi hat on 2 and 4.
Non-drummers: can you play a drum roll?
Me: of course I can play a drum roll.
(Watches this video)
Me: man, I really can’t play a drum roll.
Ginger Floof it's mostly pressed double stroke rolls, your drum has to be super tight to get to his speed, the weak hand has to be somewhat worked to do it
@@scottsmothermon63 it doesn't need to be SUPER tight if you have good technique, but it helps
Bill Mint if your head is loose the stick won't bounce, that's all I'm saying I'm a Rock drummer and my tuning is loose so I can only do those type of pressed rolls on my snare,Tom's are not tight enough, that's all
@@scottsmothermon63 I do these rolls on my floor time 😈 jk
@@scottsmothermon63 i can do these things on a floor tom. But its easier on a tight drumhead
So much control. Your technique is nice, so efficient, not over-playing or hitting unnecessarily hard. This is what I like to see. Clean, well-versed, different approaches and just pure drums no flash. That ending roll was insane as well
hahaaaaaa, THat was the first thing that came to my mind tooo, :D soooo much controool!
Bass drum is insane, everything this guy plays is amazing!
And the snare, and tomss..the cymbals are increíble
Yeah, it's my first time here and OMG with the sound of his bass drum.
No damp on it that's why.
It has no dampening, that's probably why

Drumhead demo? I'm outta-this-world inspired by your playing.
I’ve literally come back to this weekly for the past year to be inspired and motivated. From a drum head demo... 😂
Cleanest drum video ever, but still doing it dirty 🐒🐒
This comment right here yo
Yes I'm buying me one the sound I been looking for it got a lot of reverb
The sound of the kit, especially that snare, is mind boggling superb. Playing, as usual is nothing short of stellar. But man, that snare...that snare...that snare.........😰
It sounds SO GOOD.
Is that the 20s ludwig you demoed. NOB ?
Carter McLean... more like Carter McClean
They.....sound the same.....
Carter M. Clean
Arter McClean
Okay Michael Scott
The C in Carter also stands for clean
That’s more than just drumming, that’s finesse
Nice to hear well tuned drums. Love the tone.
Even, if those drums would sound like a crap, you want to buy these, after listening him playing on those drums.
My kit sounds horrible. One my friend, drummer, visited me and played on my kit. Now i believe, everything is possible.
the greatest youtube recommendation ever. hands down
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
You may THINK you can snare roll,
But this man can, too.
My god, those rolls.
Honestly, I’ve been playing for 3 years since 5th grade and my rolls are about the same
Yes, his rolls are so good
@@whacktom8190 prove it
A jazz Drummer highly doubt it
This has to be transcribed and turned into an exam piece
Playing a musical instrument should never be turned into an exam of one's playing ability. That's why too many people quit.
Benjamin Kelley that’s crazy bro but im pretty sure it was a joke
Love that wide open kick, dry cymbals and overall sound of this kit. Just a thing of raw beauty.
A haiku:
Wow, that snare sounds good,
I was not expecting this,
Dear god, that left hand.
yes
Geez.... that's one of the nicest sounding kits I can even imagine... somehow I can "hear" that they feel fantastic too.
Yeah man well tuned jazz kits feel so nice to play
Perfect tuning and perfect touch, this is drumming.
if anyone asks me what "beautiful" drumming sounds like, im straight up just sending them this video. amazing work
Me: "I play guitar, bass and drums...."
Me after seeing this: "I play guitar and bass"
Me after seeing Davy 504 "I play guitar"
Me after seeing Igor Presnjakov "Fuck this i'll just listen to music from now on"
Nah, just learn from em. It'll work.
Love it man, that tone is really something special and your playing accentuates it perfectly.
came for the head, stayed for the drumming.
wow so good
I know your playing is everything, but this is really well recorded. Honestly one of the best snare sounds I've ever heard
How are you not a famous drummer? I love your style and I always end up going down to my basement to play drums after watching your videos.
dude he plays Lion King in broadway
He just did a week as guest drummer on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He's pretty famous. Haha.
We're all here watching him aren't we haha
Joseph Smith IG if I was “famous “ would it make a difference? I’m just here to play that’s it. No infomercial
@@cartermclean True musician mentality right there

The snare is amazing and the kick is punchier than usual, sounds perfect
That short groove at 6:12 is just exquisite 😍
Sounds unbelievably good. Tasteful rudiments!

And this is how a random drum head demo video became one of my fav drum videos on YT...
One year later, still jams. Love that snare, the second you let the snares rattle is when it gets special
now that's how a snare should sound. i love those older snares with single-flanged hoops. lets the drum sing.
Holy crap. Such a gorgeous sound. Warm, resonant, dark, breathable, ... they all SING!
top of the line drummer, one of the cleanest and most spectacular demos I've ever seen!
the sound of the bass drum and the snare drum are out of this world.
Your playing is so clean and crisp it's like ASMR
Magnificent sound; magnificent technique; utterly musical. A inspiration to us all.
This thing got me hypnotized
The dynamics of his playing and the quality and sweetness of the sound. OMG!
I mean... it's perfect. Technique and art. Great sounding kit too.
What a control over the drumming bro!😍😍😍
That's the cleanest roll I've ever heard holy shit
Your grooves are like pillows. So goddamned soft and comfortable, It's very kind on the ears!
I love metal, the tuning is different I know, this was an awesome demo of control and top level skill, 10 out of 10! Loved this! Wow! Sounds great.

Paper tearing slowly on those press to double rolls. Good god, man. Love those new heads. Must have.
I love the style and stick buzzes on the outer part of the snare. Awesome !
That snare sounds amazing!
Overall great sounding kit
Echoing all of the other comments but you have some of the best and most consistent rolls I’ve ever seen, I had the biggest grin watching this.
