At one point the screenplay for Fury Road focused heavily on Max being an older guy. Not elderly like Indiana Jones, but still old. It was a huge focus early in development and if you look at the storyboards for Fury Road you can see clearly Max is drawn to look old. It was only when Tom Hardy was cast in the role that they shifted focus away from that a bit, although even in the final product there are some small details that seem to be holdovers from before Hardy's casting.
Meh, older mad max? How about start by having Mad Max actually in the film as the lead and not chaining him up doing nothing but playing second fiddle to some girl boss? I'm sure they could find a great actor to play Max. The furiosa films look amazing, but it's meh without Mad Max. It's Mad Maxine! Blah!
People need to go to the movie theatre and see furiosa to experience that world and support this man, this is just another chapter to the story and the world deserves the final film. Mad max is a life changing movie experience
That was a different George Miller, he was Scottish ...not the same Dr Miller we are talking about. However that director also made the Neverending Story 2 for the record.
I don’t know. Personally, I think Tom brought a unique sense of ‘madness’ to Max that Mel lacked in the previous movies. Sure Mel has the cool bravado of a wandering outcast but I think Tom’s feral approach to the character brought a much more vulnerable aspect to the Max that I thought was very good.
George Miller did want him to return when he wrote the first draft of the script, but Mel Gibson said: "no thanks", because this was during the time when he made "Passion" and the success got into his head.
@@doublep1980 Did he ask him again though? Passion came out in 2004, Fury Road in 2015. I'm sure it had more to do with him getting blacklisted in 2006. I'm sure his attitude would have changed.

Have you seen the movie yet? It's really good. She's not a girl Mad Max, this is a side story about a plucky underdog just trying to survive. Very interesting direction to take a film.
Mel Gibson looks fantastic for his age and his acting ability would bring Max back with a bang. Real shame Fury Road wasn't written for an older Mac following Thunderdome. It's obvious that the Gibson controversy at the time when Fury Road came into being was the reason for him not reprising the role as it may have jeopardised the potential reception of the movie and all the hard work.

I still love the theory that Tom Hardy in Fury Road wasn't the real Max, but that he was the feral kid in the previous film grown up. With him having the music box thing that Max gave him and the fact that he hardly talks. I think George shot down that rumor, but I think it works out better that way. Making it where Max is more of a mythic figure. The feral kid looked up to Max, and I think at the end of Fury Road when she asks for his name, he paused before he says Max. He was adopting the name, and taking on that wasteland desperado image

Shame he isn't 15 years younger as these modern Mad Max films seem to have so much story to tell and if he is to do another one please don't make us wait 9 more years
I think Mel Gibson could take the helm if he wanted to, if he were allowed to. It would be a slightly different film but Mel is a great director. Knowing Miller's directing style while adding his own style to a "Mad Max" film would be awesome.
George Lucas showed the world how to create a lived in universe (galaxy really). But George Miller took it to another level. In Fury Road George Miller had created back stories fro not just the characters but for the vehicles and weapons. The two George's have shown us the way. Let's not nitpick and be assholes. They both have given cinema an amazing opportunity to tell stories in a new way.

Max's age is pretty irrelevant in the story, and Mel Gibson could very easily have been swapped out for Hardy and the movie would not have suffered at all. In fact, it might have even improved it, since there is a lot of history there.
@@DarthBuseyYeahhhhh because Mel Gibson at like 65+ is really going to have that energy required like Tom Hardy, the movies pace wouldn't suffer at all... Yeahhhhhhhh... and fairy's are blue and fluffy too.
Not that Mel Gibson couldn't be in a Mad Max movie but he'd be better playing as back character in a side story TBH.
@@Archline2 Max *was* a side character in Fury Road.
@@DarthBusey So what has that got to do with anything?
The point was how are you going to make Mel Gibson perform at the same level as Tom Hardy without impacting the pacing of the film?
@@DarthBusey What I'm saying is Mel would be better off probably playing as an aged Mad Max in a spin off movie as like a side character, that way he's not required to go balls to the wall physcially. I don't think doing a Logan like they did with Hugh Jackman works for this kind of Genre, I might be wrong I just don't see how it would work and appeal.
Wow, what an absolutely lovely person George is. So friendly and enthusiastic, I could watch him talk for hours. Didn't expect that from an auteur such as himself. I love the Mad Max movies and I can't wait to see this.
Your enthusiasm for George Miller makes me very happy
What a sweet and thinking man who looks and sounds more than a decade younger than he actually is! I love the energy he took from being fanboyed quite this hard :D
If Mel Gibson returned to that role, it would generate enough money to pay off the national debt.
Agreed
Now that is an excellent interview. Thoughtful questions, honest answers, and genuine interest shown in the material. Well done.
People don't realize just how hard it is to be a good interviewer, between having done your homework to be able to analyze the interviewee's previous work and be able to come up with interesting questions that haven't been asked before and can challenge them, all while keeping a playful and friendly tone. Jake has always been a master at this craft.
Jake, killer interview! Congrats. Amazing questions!
We ❤ You Mr. Miller!
Totally dodged that question. He's not allowed to hire Gibson again. And that's the truth
Why is he not allowed?
@@arturius9715 because he's been black listed from Hollywood for antisemitism. The major studios won't allow him to hire Gibson so he makes dumb excuses.
@@arturius9715 Hollywood blacklisted him for saying something silly while being drunk. I doubt Miller cared but movies are expensive and you need to get cash from many sources.
@808GT if he's "blacklisted" then why is he still in movies? 😂
Why not? Gibson is still doing movies. Yet another supposedly "cancelled" actor that never stopped working. 😂
Such a great interview!
Now that you've mentioned an older mad max I want one now. Gibson is close to his 70s. He needs to return for this one.
I'm with you. I don't care if Mel Gibson is using a walker and has a hearing aid, he is Max.
Old Man Road Warrior!
Blah!
@@rickdeckardbladerunner2049, I agree with you. George Miller doesn't understand what makes Mad Max.
People need to go to the movie theatre and see furiosa to experience that world and support this man, this is just another chapter to the story and the world deserves the final film. Mad max is a life changing movie experience
Another treat from George Miller is the 4th segment of the Twilight zone movie 1983... I won't spoil it but that scared me to DEATH as a kid lol
That was a different George Miller, he was Scottish ...not the same Dr Miller we are talking about. However that director also made the Neverending Story 2 for the record.
@@gimmeaslab55672no it's not, it's this George Miller who did Twilight Zone the movie
What a humble man and a great interview
Mel should have played Max in Fury Road
Yes he should have
I don’t know. Personally, I think Tom brought a unique sense of ‘madness’ to Max that Mel lacked in the previous movies. Sure Mel has the cool bravado of a wandering outcast but I think Tom’s feral approach to the character brought a much more vulnerable aspect to the Max that I thought was very good.
no
George Miller did want him to return when he wrote the first draft of the script, but Mel Gibson said: "no thanks", because this was during the time when he made "Passion" and the success got into his head.
@@doublep1980 Did he ask him again though? Passion came out in 2004, Fury Road in 2015. I'm sure it had more to do with him getting blacklisted in 2006. I'm sure his attitude would have changed.
Jake, thank you sooooo much for this amazing interview. I feel as you do regarding Mr. Miller. He is a genius, plain and simple. I have been a fan of his work since I saw the Road Warrior on VHS as a fifteen year old in 1982. Your exuberance for Mr. Miller and his work seemed genuine. Heck, I could listen to Mr. Miller talk about his experiences in regard to filmmaking for hours. Mr. Miller seems like a genuine likable man. Thank you for the question about his medical career in relation to his filmmaking career. The Road Warrior is my favorite film of all time and this series of films is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to see Furiosa. Lastly, I am still bummed that we never got to see his version of Justice League. Very interesting cast choices for this proposed version.
Have you seen the movie yet? It's really good. She's not a girl Mad Max, this is a side story about a plucky underdog just trying to survive. Very interesting direction to take a film.
Mel is the only mad max. Him coming back would really put the series over the top.
That was a good interview with George Miller. Who happens to be a very nice bloke.
Nonsense, this is a director who’s vision is clearly specific and didn’t involve him because he didn’t want to make a movie about an older hero
@@davidb9531 Gibson was hardly a dinosaur when this released and still looks good in movies. I'm of the opinion that George would have naturally concerned himself with Gibson controversy at the time, especially considering he was essentially blacklisted from Hollywood for years!
@@Tube2097you're dead right also Max 4 was planned 2 times before Fury Road. Originally it was 1998 then again in 2005 both times using Gibson and Ledger (feral boy), Miller knew after Gibsons controversial statements he wouldn't be provided funding with Mel.
Great interview, can't wait to watch Furiosa.
It sucks Furiosa underperformed I thought it was a great movie. Really dark and cerebral and not just pure action. I hope he’s still able to make more films in the future one of my favorite series ever
What a nice man !
Even after all his phenomenal success the guy is so friendly and humble .
The guy's a legend and still so down to Earth and approachable as a person.
Humilty is one of the traits of wisdom and he has it !
I hope we see Mel as Mad Max again, even as a cameo into the future.
One of the greatest interviews I've ever seen!
If Mel came back that movie would surpass Fury Road.
Mel Gibson is MAD MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great interview. You genuinely love these films and George Miller really appreciated your kind words.
Seeing Mel Gibson as an old Max surviving the wasteland would have been so appealing, but I still very much enjoyed Fury Road
Such a treasure of information jammed packed into a ten-minute interview. Great job Mr. Hamilton, I love your energy and enthusiasm!
Id rather have Mel back
Miller is oozing Max vibes, the gritty voice and accent, the hair, the face, the 'look', cool man.
George is so well spoken
Great interview. You can tell the interviewer is really a fan.
Fantastic job by the interviewer
Yeah, that was a great interview and really exposed the wonderful cinematic mind of George Miller and some of his experiences.
An absolute MASTER film director.
Incredible interview. What a genuine, down to earth and thoroughly interesting guy George Miller is.
BRING GIBSON BACK AND IT WILL BE A BLOCKBUSTER.
George is very humble and kind, a great and respectful interview you did, great work, I really hope he gets to do more movies in this awesome Mad Max universe.
One Mel one max
Once again, Jake takes the gain !
All the great questions and you can tell Georges really appreciated your insightful questions.
The first questions about how his experience as a doctor influenced his career as a filmmaker was one I've been wondering for a while and I'm so grateful that 1/ You asked it for me, and 2/ that he gave such a fascinating answer.
Also, that last part teared me up. You made that 80 year old man feel seen, and that is probably something he doesn't experience every day, despites his treasure trove of a career. Kudos to you, man !
Mel is Max. Just bring him back. It’s only right.
Great interview Jake, fantastic questions Sir.
Bring back Mel…👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌👌
I love the way the interview closes with appreciation & the reacting from George Miller was wonderfully authentic
I think it's safe to say a Mel Gibson led Max movie would crush the box office. For the love of God George, find the story and then convince Mel to do it...
Fantastic interview!
Shame he isn't 15 years younger as these modern Mad Max films seem to have so much story to tell and if he is to do another one please don't make us wait 9 more years
He can write and others can direct.
I think Mel Gibson could take the helm if he wanted to, if he were allowed to. It would be a slightly different film but Mel is a great director. Knowing Miller's directing style while adding his own style to a "Mad Max" film would be awesome.
@@daviddarko5837 Wow that would be badass. I really hope that happens. Once George decides he's done, of course.
The Fury Road sequel is literally in development. Stop crying about wanting another one soon. Rushed movies are shit.
@@joewas2225 In development? 😂 Are you from the past?
George and Mel had a huge falling out back years ago. I do not think we will ever see a Mel version of Mad Max ever again. Sad but true.
Good interview, meaningful questions. More power to you. Stay up!
What a gorgeous interview, thank you!
I can't accept anyone else in the role, other than Mel Gibson.
Absolutely. Tom Hardy is good but his Max didn't cut it.
Agreed
Hardy ruined Fury Road for me it's only redeeming feature was Theron
@@Irishesbox11😂 Hardy was a great Max
Tom did great. The next movie explaining why he doesn't talk will explain more, I believe, to let George fulfill his vision.
Hey, you did a really great interview, so I subscribed. Nice work! 👍

Thanks!
great interview!
You're giving far too much credit to Lucas. His wife deserves a lot of that credit as do the effects crews, specifically John Dykstra. Remove those factors and you get the awful prequels.
Lucas copied dune. George Miller didn't
George Lucas is on another level entirely. Episodes 1-6 are masterpieces all. Wonderful
All the backstories were useless when you make Mad Max a bitch. The the furiosa films look amazing, but without Mad Max, it Mad Meh!
amazing interview. every single time I watch Road Warrior it reminds me what an incredible grip George has on filmmaking and style.
Mad Max films are just not the same without Mel Gibson. 😢
That was one of the greatest interviews iv ever watched, your genuine enthusiasm and excellent questions had me sitting on the side lines slack jawed, definitely subbed…
Please bring Mel back.
George is awesome. Can't believe I've never seen an interview with him before.
Mel should have been in it from day one. I highly doubt it will happen now.
Great interview! Thanks!
