    1965, Alushta, Crimea, at the time part of the Soviet Union.
    Aged 19, Alessandro Marroni, who will later become one of the most respected diving & hyperbaric physicians and founder of DAN (Divers Alert Network Europe) was an athlete of the Italian national team, participating in the first European Underwater Orienteering, Technique and Finned Swimming Championship.
    Competing teams: CCCP, Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, East Germany DDR, and Italy.
    CCCP ranked first, Italy second, Bulgaria third.
    The event represented the birth of a new sport discipline.
