How Creative Thinking Will Change Your Expat Experience 🇳🇮 Nicaragua

  • When you live in #Nicaragua you often have to work hard to overcome the change of context and to think and see the world more broadly and to understand what you can do, what makes sense to do, and how to view your ultimate goals rather than to be caught up in the process or "means" of achieving them. Goal level thinking and flexibility are the names of the game here.

I call it the “mañana reality”. I have had to adjust to many different and radical places. I simply walked around and mingled for as long as it took till I picked up the vibe and rhythm, then it is a simple new dance!
Flexiblility is the key to a good dancer….😉💃 🕺 😂

I agree with what you are saying about outside of the box, a lot of it has to do with the mentality in USA as compared to the rest of the world..In the USA you may have a maid IF you are Uber rich but in all of south America and many other parts of the world if you are middle class you have a maid or combination of cook/maid etc etc..I grew up with a maid that lived in our home and the fastest way to get a slap across the face was if you disrespected her in any way! She was a part of the family and was with us for decades! You touched on the fact that there any vocation is fine and not looked down on where as in the USA how much you make often is the deciding factor for how much respect and self worth you have ...sad really but there it is

      Miña! Jijiji
Doña Herminia, era de la Republica!
      She was my main mom!
Once she had to go to court for something and the judge asked me my name…then had the nerve to ask Miña, is she was our care taker, I quickly corrected the man and told him…”no ella es mi mama de dia y para dormer.! Jijiji
      Otro mundo……bendiciones!🙏🕊

My kids and I lived in Culebra, 3x7 miles island, between Puerto Rico and St Thomas. We did our major shopping in Puerto Rico, and during storms St Thomas helped us.
The ferrie and delivery system is a challenge but not if you don’t pan ahead!
I shopped with three other single moms, and rented a driver and large van. We lade a day or two of it…fun times…total madness sometimes!
    Can’t wait to visit Ometepe!

@@ScottAlanMillerVlog Puerto Rico, we are 17 miles east, 5 miles from St Thomas.
Price of paradise is so relative! I simply can’t not afford to stay and very, very gentrified!
I got there in 2001-2013…. A magical life!
I always visited as a kid, but was raised in the coffee hills high in the west cordillera in Puerto Rico!
      I can rough it! Lololo
      Live cheap go far!!

I raised show dogs had over 14 pits at one time feeding homade dog food is way cheaper honestly thow it’s better to feed meat raw it will not make them sick it’s actually safer because bones splinter when cooked. Feeding meat gives them more nutrients and it’s fully digested it reduces poop most dog food is full of corn it just produces more poop. Cooked rice and beans are healthy fillers. Chicken is cheep there I fed my dogs necks and backs parts most people don’t eat. It’s very easy .

When we visited in January 2024 we hired a car from the airport so we could drive between places of interest. One of those being Ometepe. We had ferry bookings for both ways from San Jorge with our hire car. This is definitely where I had a taste of thinking outside the box. From my British perspective and using the cross-channel ferries all my life, a reservation is a reservation.....If you turn up in time then you will get on that ferry! I now understand this is not the case with Ometepe ferries, especially if you are a tourist. We got bumped a couple of ferries on the way out, then on the way back high winds on our departure day meant nearly all ferries were cancelled (plus a power cut where we were staying). The next day we got bumped from the first AM ferry but luckily the next one had a Toyota Avensis shaped hole we could slot into. In hindsight I totally understand the ferry manager bumps non-essentials like tourists if a truck with spare parts or perishables needs the place, they take priority. Just because tengo una reserva, don't mean nuffin! Moral of the story for me is I wouldn't hire a car again and rely on buses instead. Having now visited Nicaragua I know now that a car is not essential and my family would be fine with buses etc when we return in Jan 2024. We'd also definitely return to Ometepe.....but minus the car! Foot passenger only

I live within 5 miles of a few high end pet supply stores (and a PetSmart and Petco) and I'm making my own dog food. There's so many issues with the commercial pet food industry that i feel like it's the safest thing to do these days. 🤷‍♀️. It's a lot of work cooking for two big dogs, though! What brands of pet food are available there? Not just from the USA, but ate there Nicaraguan dog food brands?

i think you being a bit dramatic on the taxi/ private delivery service for food. here in the u.s ordering on grubhub has you with like 5 dollar minimum service fee plus whatever tip you will pay which is rarely ever below 10. Food will likely be itself cheaper unless you go for those big franchises i would assume.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  2 месяца назад

Not many big franchises here. A few, but very few. Only one (McD's) offers online ordering (except today.) This is Leon. Managua I assume you'd have lots of franchise options to order from. Grubhub is misleading though. They raise the price, THEN add something like $5 service fee. Here the deliver is like $1 or less on bike. BUt if you send a taxi, which we do all the time, it's a normal trip just as if they took a person. What's $1 or less for Pedidos Ya (bike delivery) is definitely $3-$6 for a taxi as it's all the same driving, plus extra waiting and work, to do the food. It's not terrible, and I suppose if you find a way to order without using Pedidos Ya, you'd get the local prices. But if you use the app to order, but send a taxi to pickup, you'd pay twice.
