    Those bilge pumps are ok if you design the nozzle properly. The 2,000 pump is enough for the 1.5" pipe and you will need a 3,000 pump for the 2" pump. You will not generate any hi suction without adding a venturi below the suction port. The diameter, position and length of the venturi are most important, as well as the length of the discharge tube. You need to install a vacuum gauge in the suction port so that you can tune up your pump as you develop it without having to use any math.

    this is perfect and wow....what a great video. i just want to dredge bedrock cracks in a shallow river and ur not allowed to "silt" the river so a battery set up...not to big and 2 to 3 hrs use is what I need.

    Excellent vid djpitr! I like your ideas here and am going to begin building the same kind of design soon. Going to use a 3700 GPH bilge pump that has a 40mm outlet, (just over 1.5"). Planning on reducing it with a "funnel nozzle" down to 1/2" in the same size "Y" you were using, (1.5"). Hopefully it will give a little more lift than the 1000 gph pump was giving. We'll see. Just using it for cleaning out cracks and depressions in bedrock and maybe sucking material out of the bank and feeding the sluice....who knows... gotta see what the lift will do first. Probably won't "replace" the shovels but will definitely cleanup and get what the shovel misses.

      Thats a BIG pump :) i just got it in mail yesterday , 3700gph it should push some material .let me know how it will work for you in 1 1/2 inch , it should have power to bring it out of water couple of feet to the sluice .
      I will test it in 2" and 1/2 " jet .
      The only problem i see its that the 3700gph pump eats 16A of power , so we will need big battery ,
      The big one i just got its 210Ah so around 12 hours of work . I probably will build some kind of cart to haul it to the creek :)

    Thanks for the video djpitr, this is great! I had an issue with the jet for a minute(Ratio of jet to pipe size wasn't great enough), but after a little research on venturi priciples I had it working in no time. Thanks again for posting!

      No problem :) im happy to help , yeh i didn't talk about it , the size of the long straight pipe important , when you spray the stream of water from jet to the long straight pipe , the ID of the pipe should by little bit bigger then the stream of water , that whats make the suction .

    Dude great video! I’m working on this right now. Been 2 days and I’ve got it not blowing but not sucking really either. Running a 2000 gph pumpwith a 1 1/4 inch hose. From the pump it runs down to 1/2 inch. But still no real suction!!!! Grrr. But good job!

    the jet is from ( Hand Pump ) and you can see it in google images
    and if your pump is not good enouph to suction you have to use Fenteer 12V Bilgepumpe 3700GPH , it makes you to use 2,5 inch dredge suction :D and if you use this pump on 2 or 1.5 inch suction you have the best suction power in all the world my friend .

    Opps let me try again, the set up you have is good, but there are some flaws your nossal needs to be shorter as the flow is happenig the gravel will wear your nossal out and you will have to replace it reguraly. You have the correct thickness sch 80 fittings is what you have with this nossal you will have a low pressure to a high pressure to a low pressure because your going from 1 inch to 1/4 inch to 1-1/2"this is called a called a ventura fitting which is mostly used in a heating system . You can get it at home depot in the irrigation section which is good for flow i do think you need to build in a way to replace parts that wear out threaded fittings and teflon tape then you don't have to buy everything again because everything was glued just the parts you need to replace barbed fittings and your clamps are good but 2 clamps per joint is best with the head of the clamps at 3 and 9 oclock to get more time on your battary use a solar panel to recharge lol with sunny days if you need help let me know

    great job on an informative video Pitr!
    I'm just starting my build of an electric dredge.
    I'll be using a 2000gph bilge pump. Not much for pressure but it will move a lot of water.
    I had wanted to go with a 1.5" nozzle but for simplicity I'll probably end up going to a 2".
    Sluicelee did a very nice video of your dredge in action and it appeared to have plenty of suction even feeding the long hose.
    I have a couple of questions about hose length.
    You mentioned that a shorter hose from the pump to the nozzle would be best but if you shorten it wouldn't you have a problem with pulling the pump around when moving the nozzle? what do you feel is the ideal length? I was going to go with 6'...Do you feel that is too long?
    also...the hose from the nozzle to the sluice...what have you found to be the maximum length for it?
    I was thinking 10'

      Thanks , and good luck with your build , the longer hose you will have more you slow down the material , 6 f for the jet should be ok keep it all under water all the time , 10 f for the output its too long , one think i didnot talk about its all the material in the hose , in all dredges thats problem , if you suck material too fast and fill the hose with too much gravels it will clogged , its importune to suck slow for proper slush mixture , ( gravel+water) so it moves thru the length of the hose without stoping , especially with this small electric pumps

    Hi Nicolas!!I got a couple of questions for you on the nozzle build...Do you remember the measurement on your Jet?I just finished building one today using a 2000gph bilge pump but I don't have any suction.my pump outlet is 1 1/8" going into a 1 1/4" hose (8' long) then being reduce to a 3/8" jet in side the 1 1/2" plumbing "Y" using a 1.5" output hose.Do you feel I should go to a smaller hose from the pump to the nozzle or go to a smaller jet (I used the standard 1:4 ratio to find what should have been the proper sized jet.......1.5" :4 = 3/8").Thanks, Terry

    Díky moc, právě tady maturuju, jestli to udělám ze 40 mm PVC odbočky (45 stupňů) nebo 32 mm. Mám 1100 GPH pumpu, přemýšlím o silnější (3500-3700), ale ty zase chtějí hodně Amp a taky stojí ledvinu. Každopádně pro mě důležitá informace, že to nedostanu moc nad vodu, tj. highbanker musí níž, nebo udělat trubkový splav...

    I have a question for all the people who try to reinvent the wheel.
    By the time you buy everything you THINK you need to build something that is already on the market , how much have you actually spent and does it actually work?

      William Coley thanks for comment William , good point ... there are people who like make their own and understand how it works stuff , and there are others that just go and buy stuff , Gold prospecting hobby it’s pretty small field , so the commercially sold stuff , like dredge, it’s pretty overpriced, so some chose to make their own , there is in market 12v small dredge for sale , bud it costs over $500 ! For a $10 pump and some pvc fittings:) and gold prospectors looks like always trying find a different and cheep ways to get the shiny Gold :)

    If i added 2 (12v)pumps to supply the water do u think it would up the pressure and most importantly the suction?

      It helps , bud mainly for movement of more water u could go with bigger diameter of suction house with more 12c pumps , theses pumps are not pressure pumps so no , to increase pressure you would have to design the right Venturi jet for the flow of your pumps

    Top video bud I’m going try 130 psi 6A 12v pump an useing a compressed air gun as the jet/ nozzle trying to keep the highest pressure at the head of the jet/nozzle hopeing that going to interest the flow an lifting power.
    (how long is the bump pipe back to your sluice box an it’s max lift height from the pay dirit to top of sluice box )
    any help be good thanks an keep it up

      +TheSgtDucttape thanks for interest , i build manny other nozzles with ordinary kitchen funnel l!!"cut the right way " !!! Its really importune to test the jet with your pump ,every pump is little different , what you looking for is that the water will spray out of the jet in nice undisturbed stream , thats whats nice about the cheep kitchen funnels , you can buy 5 for 5$ in family dollar or any cheep store and easy cut it with razor blade and test what works for your pump

    Can this be done with an air compressor or does it work better with a water pump?

      Jonathan Schell yes it can :) i seen same way made vacuuming device with air to air , you inject air to jet same way and it creates vacuum ,
      Now if you thinking air to water , i thought about it too , like injected air same way thru small jet it would definitely made the water move , the problem i think would by that farther down thru the house it would create big bubbles ( like pockets of air ) that would by pushing the water out , bud the problem would by with the gold , because its weight , it would by settling in the house . Bud if you want to use it just for moving water it would work fine .

    when you are making your 1.5 in dredge you want to change your funnel to one that is 3/8 in in diameter in order to get a better suction I think you are using a larger one and it is not doing what you want it to do

      Thanks William , i played with different nozzles long time , :)
      What i didnot show in video is how to select the right size jet , its easy , every pump is different and so its different for every pump , the best way how it works for me its to test different sizes and the one that can spray water farer and in nice stream is the one , every pump acts different when restricted with jet , some will build more pressure some not .

      the hose is sold for outdoor fish ponds ,its smooth inside ,any hose will work ,

    to save money on hoses go to your recycling center and get hoses from vacuums' for free instead of spending money for expensive hoses

      Yes great idea, just make sure the hose from nozzle to the sluice is smooth wall inside or your gold will stay in the hose , i will change it to flexible rollable garden hose from the pump to the nozzle to make it more packable and lighter
