The tape on the wing is actually called speed tape. It functions just like duct tape, but is strong enough to withstand the speeds planes travel at.
...you're still saying that airline mechanics can't be bothered to do anything more than tape things together before letting the plane take off. That's not comforting.

The first time I flew by myself, I got home and was unpacking and there was a pocket knife in my bag and it never got flagged. I was like...what the fuck I could've gotten in huge trouble.

I'm just surprised no one stalls while on the show. They can really roll with the flow. I guess it's just how they pitch their ideas to one another that they avoid any turbulence in the conversation. Just listening to them really lifts me up.
At least it was not as bad as me. Matt got it easy. I literally went through the airport with a suitcase full of medieval weapons. they pulled me to the side along with three friends of mine. We had a total of over 70 weapons as well as two suits of metal armor and three suits of leather armor. The reason we had that much was because we were on our way to a festival to be actors
I don't know if you'll see this 6 years later, but out of curiosity, how did that end for you? Did they let you on, did you keep the weapons what happend?

I had a similar thing to the duct tape. I was chatting to a friend about it and one of the cabin crew walked past and said it was "high speed galvanised tape"

What I'm about to say is going to make me seem like an absolute scumbag, but if I was in the situation where I saw a pilot with a drink in his hand, I'd probably say: "Alright, how's about you give me all the money in your wallet, and this never happened."

Two Scenarios could have taken place in the last plane story:
1) The pilot saw them see that he was drinking, he thought they could have freaked out like he had been drunk while piloting, and he got scared or
2) He recognized them from RoosterTeeth, thought he was seeing things from drinking, and froze out of not being sure whether to greet them or walk back just in case he was crazy.
Either way, hilarious story :)

Just an FYI, when you see what looks like duct tape on the wing or other area of a plane, that's not duct tape lol
It's a metal tape called speed tape. It's only used to repair non-critical parts of the aircraft.
It's usually used on commercial aircraft to patch minor cracks that will be repaired properly when the aircraft is next sent for a full service.
the duct tape on the wing is actually totally normal procedure to fix small indents or scratches that aren't a problem till the next maintenance but shouldn't be left to rust for example.
the black ooze on the other hand sounds like the thing was leaking hydraulics oil. if it suddenly stops doing that midflight is when you know you have a problem :'D

I work for one of the big airlines as a baggage handler, and you'd be surprise how much they use Super Duck Tape on planes to fix a broken cockpit window or on the side of the plane! Lol.
I got home today, got on my RUclips account, looked at my subscriptions, saw the animated adventure, and KNEW I had to click. :)
They don't use duct tape on aircraft. They use what's called in the industry "speed tape" which some people use to refer to duct tape, which is where the confusion sets in. Speed tape is actually just a roll of thin aircraft grade aluminum, backed with an incredibly strong adhesive that when applied correctly (not just taken off the roll and slapped on) is more of a permanent bond than the paint to the body of the plane.

I was going to Minnesota one time and we got pulled too. Only, we didn't have knives. The Hazmat detector mistook some dried cane sugar we were carrying for explosives.

I once flew with a small plane, with like..2 other people on it, and we flew over some mountains. And when we were going over the mountain, the plane seriously dropped like 3 times, and we all lifted from our seats. Thats the first and only time, Ive ever prayed to god.

He was working on an experiment to keep Joel from interrupting, and it backfired. Burnie was also in the blast radius.

I went through airport security with a penknife once. My friends and i had just been secretly laughing at the people in front of us for carrying a full bottle of shampoo through, and then my bag gets flagged. Inside a pocket i had never used was a spilled bag of completely broken biscuits and a rusty metal penknife. So the person has to ask me why there is both a penknife and a large quantity of mysterious powder in my bag. Mortifying.
