Sinclair C5 Restoration - Part 2 - Tear Down (v2)

- In this video I strip the Sinclair C5 electric vehicle down to the chassis in order to assess its condition. I also spot some other problems, and discover the source of the wonky wheel noted in the last video.
When I recorded this video, I had not taken this C5 apart before. Some parts were in the wrong place, and these have been shown with captions. These captions were added and the video re-uploaded in 2020 in order to make these errors clear.
The tear down procedure is that Iearned from Charles Snarsky in the following video:
- RUclips video by Jordan8ish "Sinclair C5 stripdown": • SINCLAIR C5 STRIPDOWN ...
I also used the Sinclair Owners Manual (contains exploded diagram and parts list): www.c5owners.com/sinclair-c5-...
I've created a step-by-step disassembly guide on my website, which you can use as a reference for your own tear down - view or print from the following webpage:

thanks for a great guide Dave wouldn't have known where to start on my restoration without it
regards Gary
Thanks ever so much for the video series i was in the market for an electric bicycle to have a cruise around in the summer and JUST now found a cheap working c5 within an hour drive.
This is well explained and come in handy for when I start on my C5 that my neighbour is giving me. 🤔
Good luck with your C5 restoration!
@@RetroWorkshop thanks, interested in a throttle for the motor instead of the on/off switch.
Can’t help with that I’m afraid. You’d need a controller of some little circuit to covert an analogue throttle to on on/ off relay.
You make it look like a pretty ambitious project. I am fascinated by all these old battery-driven vehicles since I was alive when they were made but could not afford it. The C-5 Did not really see it in the US when it first came out. It would be fun to modernize one but keep the retro look.
Wanted to come back to this video, by now i'v done 2 clive's ! one upgraded to front hub motor and one to brushless rear motor.
Excellent, one C5 is good. Two C5s is better! Enjoy.
I would raise up the handlebars and add a radio.
I've re-uploaded this video (April 2020) as there were a couple of errors that needed captions to prevent confusion from those using this as a re-build guide. I am most grateful to Charles Snarsky for the tear down method shown here (link in description to his own video). There is a tear-down guide with pictures on my website at www.retroworkshop.uk/sinclair-c5-restoration/sinclair-c5-restoration-part-2-vehicle-strip-down/
Thank you Very much for this Video.
I bought a C5 and now I repair it. Thank you thank you thank you for your advises. Your Video is great !!!!
I have another question. Where can I get spare parts ?
Have a nice day my friend !!!!
eBay for parts. Also join the Facebook group “Sinclair C5 Owners” for occasional parts and advice.
Where did you get the Sinclair vehicles sign from I need one in my garage!
Glad you like the sign - I made it. I recreated the logo and had it printed on Foamex (foam board) by a local printer. it is then velcro'd to two horizontal wooden battens. If you email me via my website at retroworkshop.uk I will send you the logo.
RetroWorkshop thanks for the reply! I’ll drop you a email😀
Hello - could you please add a link to the correct tool to undo the pedals @ 8:12. Thank you.
Great Video
It is a Cotterless Crank Removal Tool. Can’t remember where I got mine try Halfords or Amazon.
@@RetroWorkshop I think it's a standard mountain Bike crank removal tool. Thanks for the Video's.
Looking at all the parts I'm to scared I wouldn't get mine back together if I took it apart.
That’s exactly what I thought when I took it all apart!
