  • How to Propagate Edgeworthia, How to Take Cuttings of Edgeworthia, Plant Propagation
    I have featured this plant in previous videos as it is such a great, Winter flowering, shrub. It produces the flowers on bare stems, before any leaves are showing, and the flowers are so sweet in scent.
    Edgworthia prefer a moist but free draining soil and are happy in full sun or partial shade. They will grow in acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline soils.
    They can be propagated by soft wood cuttings but it’s so much easier to cut, and remove, the basel stems and grow them on.
    Tools Required;
    Clean sharp pair of secateurs
    Pot
    Fresh compost
    Literally just cut through the side basel stems to remove them from the main plant.
    Once the stem has been cut through you should, with a bit of force, be able to pull out the stem and tap root that it has produced.
    Immediately pot up the new section of plant into fresh compost and keep it on the moist side.
    I normally put my cuttings and juvenile plants into a more sheltered and shady position so as to reduce moisture evaporation and plant stress.
    Within a couple of years the new plant will be big enough to start producing flower.

    Thanks for the video - just bought an Edgeworthia. It's a bit bare at the moment. Will probably need to wait until next summer to take basal stem cuttings

      Hi. Thanks for your message. The honest answer is that I haven’t tried so don’t know. It would be interesting to try though. If you try then please let me know how you get on.

    Does it highly scented or just light fragrance. . ?

      Thanks for your message. It’s highly scented and very sweet smelling. Some of the names varieties have different shades of yellow, and there is a red flowering one, but they don’t have as strong a scent.

      @@diyhomeandgardening thanks for reply..One last thing to know whether can it be planted in a hot and humid area and is that possible to get flowers if I plant it in a container.?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  3 года назад

      Not sure about humidity. It originates from China, hardy down to -10oC but will tolerate heat too. I have a grower of Edgeworthia in Italy, where it’s up to 50oC but that’s a dry heat.
      Mine is in a container and they are happy there.
      Worth an experiment to see on your growing conditions. I suspect the plant would be fine.

    Nice, but strange way to take cuttings without... cutting! :-)

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  3 года назад

      They are classed still as basal stem cuttings although they are not basal cuttings in the same vein as say you would do Dahlia basal cuttings.
      The Italians only do propagation in this, almost division, method and it works really well when you don’t have great prop facilities.
      Normal cutting methods for Edgewothia have a quite a low success rate and plants take forever to get going.

      I’m sure the pricing is all relative? But it’s great that you own an Edgeworthia as they are just so nice.
      Enjoy your gardening 😄
