  • Marcel Duchamp (b. Normandy, 1887-1968) dabbled in the modernist realms of Cubism and Dada, but he was really in a league of his own. His radical creations are both humorous and cerebral, designed to prompt that crucial question: is it art?
    This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
    Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
    We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

    Call out Joan Miró's crappy work.
    Why is he even considered a great artist?

    Shouldn’t art inspire? What’s inspiring about buying a random object designed by someone else then presenting it as your own work of art?

    My favorite art collector Ongo Gablogian! Seriously though this channel is awesome. I’ve taken many art history classes during my time at university, but the quality and concise nature of these videos provides a very nice way to learn about art history without all of the downsides of a university course.

    Duchamp was himself intolerant of both other modernists, and his immediate predecessors. He claimed he wanted to "destroy art" as religion had been, in his mind, destroyed. He's an anti-artist, and he's anti-art. He ushered in the mundane, the banal, the neither ugly nor beautiful. He wanted to put the utterly innocuous on a pedestal in a rebellion against aesthetics, beauty, meaning, and transcendence. His art is like flavorless food: library paste on a spoon celebrated as the greatest cuisine of our times. He strove to make the boring into art, to rid his art of anything visually appealing, to make art a mundane, mute, thing. And he succeeded. After Duchamp died, Picasso famously said (assuming this story isn't apocryphal), "He was wrong". Picasso was right.

    I can think of no more boring artist. However, that was something Duchamp heralded. Not only did he seek to present object he selecting very specifically because they he was "indifferent" to them, and they were completely mute in terms of aesthetics and visual language, he also adulated the boring in art, and argued people had started to go to "happenings" and other art events in order to be "bored".

    Superb coverage of M.D. Thus was born our late 20th century Pandora's Box of 'conceptualistic parasites' leaping in facile and commercial manner (unlike the brilliant philosophic founder, M.D. himself) on anything that "anyone could have done"! Bottom line: anything requiring catalogue notes to explain itself has captured
    nothing but its own solipsistic existence. But M.D. - a genius for his time, but not - in his wake, politically, socially, etc - ours. The definition of art remains as anarchic as any interpretative response to anything. That said, your longer narrative commentary was wonderfully comprehensive (as usual) and guaranteed to prompt discussion galore. Thank you. Ta. MB

      Precisely! He opened the flood gates for a lot of crap (and a lot of great art, too) but if nothing else I hope the takeaway is that his philosophy was revolutionary. Kinda like the Shakespearean sentiment that “all the world’s a stage,” it’s just really cool that he was amongst the first to see the potential for art in anything and everything. So glad you enjoyed the vid!

    Can you make a video about Elsa von Freytag? the dada artist who Duchamp stole the urinal from

  • @campbellpaul
    @campbellpaul 3 года назад +2

    I always think of DADA and Duchamp when the question "what is art?" comes up... It is really a question of sincerity and intention. If an artist makes it, is it art? If he or she is not trying to deceive anybody, and calls it art, then it is art. If its intention is questionable, then so is how it is defined as art.

      The ever-debatable question! That’s why we adore Duchamp. Regardless of whether his creations resonate, he certainly prompted a meaningful and enduring topic of discussion.

    Ok I'm officially taking issue with your correct pronunciation of hannah hoch, yet you called Vincent "van go" in the munch video. You can pronounce Gogh better than any of us lol ^^;
    I'm a man of impeccable taste and I only troll the comment section of the very best RUclips has to offer. I guess you could consider this an honor, because I'm kind of a big deal you can even ask my mom.
