      @@johnsrabe Hi! You are so welcomed. Thanks for your comment. It was a hard decision because as a collector I don’t like to polish my watches. However in this particular case, this piece had already been polished and was badly scratched. It belonged to one owner and was his daily wear. I trusted Stian and I’m very happy with the restoration.

    Stian!! Long time no see! I really enjoyed your rapier wit and dulcet voice as you applied hammer and tong to the Big Rose Tudor. An ETA movement is not a bad off the shelf movement, I feel, although it ain't Rolex. I confess I harbor lukewarm affection for Tudor. The budget little brother to the Crown. But in 1959, that is still a damn fine watch!! So very nice to watch you again!! Best, Stephen ❤❤😊

    One can really feel your Viking roots sometimes: you really do love hammering at things, don't you? :-)
    Fantastic work as usual, it's great to see you work on the bracelet - it's quite rare to see that in video.
    The part that amazes me the most is how you deal with the hairspring. I have messed with hairsprings on a couple of junk pocket watches. This has taught me one thing: _do _*_not_*_ mess with hairsprings, leave it to the professionnals!_ ;-)
    That's a beautiful vintage Tudor, nice patina on the dial and the movement is very nice.

    That was beautifully executed, Stian. I especially enjoyed this video because the watch reminded me of one my father owned for many years and later regretted parting with.
    It was a Tudor Oyster Royal. The batons were slightly different and there was more texture on the dial surface, but overall, it was very similar to this watch.

      I really did.
      My dad's watch had the small rose imprint and a 'waffle' finish on the dial. I'm sure it was 50s vintage, though.
      The work you did on the watch in this video was very comprehensive. Interesting to see the amount of work you put into the bracelet.
      Do you charge by the hour or for the whole job?
      If you use the content for a video, does the customer receive a discount? Just interested to know how you work things out, from a business perspective.

    Can you tell me the make and model of the curved tweezers you're driving? The more I worked on the Timex Q movement I mentioned recently, the more I longed for a pair of curved tweezers to see if they would make the approach angles better.
    The Timex came with a pile of old quartz watches and one mechanical my Uncle sent me to kickstart my watchmaking interest a couple weeks back. I actually finished it Saturday night. It was a non-runner when I got it and I was able to diagnose the problem and fabricate a new part. I never knew you could service a quartz watch--actually, until several weeks ago I didn't know about watches at all. I was sooo excited when I actually got the train wheel bridge to seat correctly, and even more excited when the movement sprung back to life. Yippee! I know it's a low end movement according to many, but that point where it springs back to life has to feel the same but matter the type.

    As always, an enjoyable and informative video. Thank you for creating it. I have heard of a process called "poising" a balance, but I don't recall ever seeing a video that you have made that explains what this is all about. If you come across a watch that needs "poising" in the future, would you please educate all of us about what makes this necessary and how it is done?

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  Год назад

      Hello Michael, poising is the process of reducing/eliminating weight distribution inconsistencies in the balance wheel. There are two flavors, static and dynamic. I'll do both in an upcoming series but that will be in a few months. There is of course a chance I'll have to do it also on a watch before that :)

    Hi. Excellent work with the balance spring. By the way, I've always eard that this spring should be cleaned with the rubis on, for better safety. But you take them off before cleaning. Maybe your modern cleaning machine is more gentle than the old ones, I don't know... Anyway, thanks for showing :)

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  Год назад +1

      Hello Carlos, there's basically zero risk of damaging the pivots when the balance is screwed to the mainplate, in my opinion, and it should clean the pivots better if they are not covered by the cap stones. But as with anything there are many ways of doing a task and it might be that different teachers and schools have different preferences :)

    Great video Stian! I have an old Tudor, mine with the smaller rose. I love this bigger rose! I’m not a new watch fan, nor really a Rolex fan since it’s all about branding, so unfortunately that rubs off onto Tudor. However, I only like old things, so maybe in 20 years time I might like modern Tudors? Loved the wee and poo insight, thank your daughter for me😂. How do you know how to adjust a balance hairspring in situ while running, I have enough trouble doing it off the wheel? How do you stop caseback gaskets from twisting as you put it on, I noticed when you put it on it started to look like it might twist like mine do often. Where have you been fella, we have all really missed you! Really looking forward to watch dial videos! Ta ta.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  Год назад +1

      Hello Boyd, thanks for your message :) I've been in training for six weeks and haven't had much time to make videos...
      The hairspring action is actually less complicated than you think, it's basically like this: the hairspring needs to be in the middle between the pins or pin and boot and if it is not, you can push or pull it at the stud. That should also help it develop more uniformly. It also needs to be centered on the jewel of course.
      If you put the case back gasket on with the tweezers there shouldn't be much risk of it twisting, I should think?

    Stian, this is such a handsome watch, I really like the face. It's simple, but elegant. And of course, I have some questions. Why does a watch run differently in either a horizontal or vertical position? Regarding the bracelet, through the magic of editing, repairing the bracelet went quickly. However, how long did it really take to repair the bracelet? The liquid in the container you use in the ultrasound appears to have some viscosity to it. What makes up that liquid? Sorry I had so many questions, but as you know I really enjoy your humor and information you include in your videos. I hope you and yours are healthy and at peace. Cheers from this inquisitive retired old coot living the dream in Tennessee.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  Год назад +2

      Hello Robert, a watch will run a bit differently due to tiny inconsistencies in weight distribution and roundness+flatness of the balance wheel and the hairspring.
      The bracelet took me about half a day in total and the liquid in the jar I used is Elma Red 1:9 😊

    Hej Stian, bra jobbet på urklockan som alltid. Den roligaste momenten av din video var med hundar och deras tävling med skall :D
    Den interresante momenten var, när du mäter noggrannhet i olika positioner och skillnad är så stor. Sedan gör du en precis rörelse med "hairspring" inne axel och problem försvinner. Det förstår jag inte..

      Tjenare Tomas, jeg forklarte ikke hva jeg gjorde veldig godt så jeg skjønner hvorfor du spør :) Det er to trinn; først må index pinnene være så tett sammen at hairspringen bare har littegrann bevegelsesrom og deretter må hairspringen være i midten mellom index pinnene. Det var dette siste jeg gjorde med å presse på hairspringen nær studen.

    I love the tudor movement, and the tudor brand, but in my mind it'll always be a lower cost alternative to Rolex. I mean, like every oyster style watch design. If they want to compete with Rolex, I think they'll need to come out with some unique, signature designs. They can't just make an oysterdate with a rose logo and expect to fetch Rolex prices, in my opinion.

    How much would a restoration usually cost? I don't think I can get this kinda service any where in India. I have my grandpa's old enicar watch that deserves this kinda touch but I have no way of making it happen. Beautiful watch that needs a little but if love to work better

      It depends on the watch of course, but for a not too complicated watch around 4-500 euros.

    May I ask what the references of the bracelet and endlinks are. I have such a Tudor but no bracelet for it. Thanks!

      I honestly do not know but you should be able to find it by googling your watch's reference and bracelet

    In changing the logo from the rose to the shield, Tudor ensured I would never buy a new watch from their brand. I wouldn't buy a new Grand Seiko for similar reasons but I prefer the designs from the mid-20th century anyway.
