We continue on our 6-part aerial adventure inspired by the Grand Tour’s journey through Europe. Tonight we take the Ryan Navion L-17B by Hangar Studios.
Part 5 | From Budapest to Balaton: The Navion Adventure Begins
For Part 5, we’re jumping into the Ryan Navion L-17B-a post-WWII military classic that looks like it’s just waiting to be flown by a war hero. Produced by North American Aviation, the same folks who brought us the P-51 Mustang, this beauty is built for both utility and style. Hangar Studios 713 have recreated it in all its vintage glory, and now we’ll be taking this machine on a tour through Hungary and Slovenia.
    Route and Destinations
Our journey begins at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport LHBP, Hungary’s busiest hub. After the slower pace of the Ercoupe, the Navion feels like a proper step up. Originally designed as a military liaison aircraft, it’s a smooth mix of style and substance-a bit like James Bond in a leather jacket. Time to leave behind the Danube and head south.
Next stop, Sármellék Airport LHSM, which serves the popular Lake Balaton region-often referred to as the “Hungarian Sea.” Now, Lake Balaton isn’t just any old lake; it’s the largest in Central Europe. And while Budapest may grab the headlines, Balaton is where Hungarians come to relax, windsurf, and live the good life. The airport itself? Small, functional, and ready for us to touch down in style with the Navion’s military pedigree on full display.
Finally, we head to Maribor LJMB, Slovenia’s second-largest city. Situated in the lush Drava Valley, Maribor has been around since the Middle Ages and spent most of that time being passed back and forth between empires. It’s a bit of an underdog, overshadowed by Ljubljana, but that’s part of its charm. The airport, Maribor Edvard Rusjan, might not be the biggest, but it’s well-kept and nestled in the kind of scenic landscape that makes you want to break out a picnic blanket and enjoy the view.
    Route: LHBP - LHSM* - LJMB* ( * = full stop landings)
Aircraft: Navion L-17B or anything with a cruise speed about about 150kts
    Weather: Live if possible
