RIP. It has been 33 years when I was introduced to Lee Perry's music, through the album Time Bomb, when I was stationed in Germany, by a couple of my German friends, Jorge and Derrik. We had formed a "German- American-Reggae Band. "Lee Scratch Perry legalize ganja"
I listened to it on repeat way too many times when I discovered it. I'm playing 2 different versions right now. This one in this vid is also known as 'The Jamaican Cut."
I think that album might have been Reggae Refreshers on the Mango label, part of Island Records. I is a Reggae Anorak Nerd. The Album was cool, as it featured a great cross section of different reggae sounds, British stuff Steel Pulse, LKJ, Jamaican stuff, some dub plates and American Reggae from Black Uhuru and Third World. There may be in my humble opinion be better compilations out there, but this one is a great album to introduce people to Reggae and you get this track which is one of, if not my favorite Lee Perry tune.
I saw him three times in my life: first time in Deptford London: he was OK; Second time in Hackney London: he was FANTASTIC. Third time in Antwerp, Belgium. He was so awful, bad, it was shameful. My friends and I went for a walk! Was it because the audience was mainly white that you were awful, Lee?
I saw him a number of years ago in a mainly caucasian audience. He walked through the crowd to the stage. He was incredible. The only gig I went to sober.
Still wonderful after 45 years. RIP Lee.
