I’m doing a SUPER last minute bowsette cosplay and omfg you came in so much clutch with this thank you. I really needed this (currently is anime expo) 😂
Yeah definitely. I’m still refining the process and trying to make it as easy to build as I can, I think I got it mostly figured out. I’ll definitely make a video on it soon. So stay tuned 😉 ps.Thanks for commenting
This is great! My school is playing a Midsummers' Night Dream and I'm playing Puck, but we don't have the budget for costumes so it's up to us to make it. This is a life saver 🙌
I need 24 horns for a different kind of project, whilsy this may b8g e quite time consuming I reckon it's way cheaper than buying any I can find. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks... I covered the whole thing gluing paper towel pieces to give it extra hold, also gave it a rough look so when I painted it black I could rub on gold mica powder for highlights. Awesome!
Thanks Brian! that sounds cool, what have you been making? And what kind of amazon cardboard are you using, is it the thin cardboard (the kind they wrap books in) or just the standard box type cardboard?. I need to make more “making stuff out of cardboard” videos.
No I don’t but that’s a great idea, I’ll have to make one. How I’d do it, first do a base coat of PVA, this will make em’ stronger and give them a better finish when painted. Wait until the PVA is totally dry and then go for your base colour (this should be the darker of the colours your using) then once thats dry shooed a lighter highlight colour and “dry brush” the horns with that colour, you can repeat the “dribrushing” with lighter colours each time until you get the look you want. Best of luck with your paint job, I’m sure it’ll look great 👍 and thanks for the comment 😁
Hey this is rather late, but thank you for the reply and tips on painting! If you do happen to make a video over it in the future, I'll be sure to keep a lookout for it! Thank you so much!
This is such a great video and I can see why it is so popular...its fun to watch and you show how to do this so easily and such a real looking horn it is at the end. Thank you for making this video!...You are very very handsome too.
Super helpful tutorial. Thank you. Needed to make some horns for my halloween costume and was going to go about this in a completely different way but this method is much nicer.
To strip of one side of the card easily, spray it with water. I used one for misting plants and came right off in one go. (Obviously don't use too much!)
Any idea how this technique would turn out as war horns? Perhaps if the cardboard was saturated and cured in resin after the horns are made they may have a good tone for blowing?
Wow. That’s wicked!! I’d love to try making a piñata some day, the horns will me a nice little addition 👍😉 also you should check out “Laurence Vallières” she is a sculptor that works in cardboard, her work is really inspiring. ruclips.net/video/LehWJicM5bk/видео.html hope these piñata making goes well 😁👍
Yeah you can layer them with paper and PVA(modpodge) it’d strengthen them and probably make em’ look more like real horns and of course you can paint the to look however you like.
I personally was thinking of paper mache, which, my poor mans version is just watered down glue ( a little water, not too much) and old magazines that should strengthen em right up 😊
… googled it.. ya know what?, they are actually kinda *cute* in the creepy 80s/90s movie (ie labyrinth) kinda way. Good luck with the long-furby build- it’s a super cool project. It’d be wild if you could wire up some servo motors and make it wiggle 😬
Yeah I don’t see why not. I’ve heard soaking a wig in fabric softener gets rid of the plastic shine of the wig and makes it look more like real hair. I haven’t tried it myself but I might be worth looking into. 👍
Yeah you could totally do it that way, but you’d have to repeat the steps “wrap it around the outside then cut it the glue it” a lot of times. The method in the video makes an identical set ( 2 horns) and you do all the cutting in the same step. But you can make em’ in whatever way you find easiest 👍
No, it’s not tapered, it’s just a straight strip. If you want each segment of the horn to get shorter just tuck them in slightly more than the one before.
You mean like curly ram horns? Yeah it should be relatively easy. Follow the steps in the video until you get to the part where you’re glueing the rings together, I’d start with the pointy bits , (sharp end of the horn) and work my way down from there in the same way I did in the video, glueing each segment in at an angle but this time rotating each segment slightly to get the twist. You might have to experiment a bit but I think it should work. Let me know how it goes, good luck and happy making. 😁👍
@@HeyPatch i already did (in august) from cardboard and a lot of red tape (and black tape to wear to the local lgbtqia+ pride demo). I built the hand around my right hand, bending strips of cardboard over my fingers and taping them.
HeyPatch Well, my idea was a dragon with three horns on her head with flowers stuck in the cracks of the horns, she also has brown hair so I’ll have to buy a wig because my hair is black and she has small tail, overalls a skirt, and white gloves with a sword. But I’d like to see other people dress as the virus 😂
Yeah It should work, cutting through rolled up card stock will be more difficult than cutting through The corrugated card, so be extra careful when you do that part. Also, because card stock is much thinner than corrugated card you’ll probably end up with a lot more rings. That’s not really a bad thing just something to be aware of. Hope it works out, best of luck and happy making 👍
You’re welcome. 😁 It might be easier to make 2 long strips of card stock about 1inch or 3cm wide and about a 90 inches or a meter long. Then one at a time roll them up but not on a marker. Then carefully push the middle out making a spiral horn, give it a bit of a bend and glue it in place. I’m sure you’ll figure something out 👍
I have a couple of things I wanna say... 1st:I loved this video. It was very helpful, and it was amazing. I also loved how imperfect it was, again, amazing! 2nd: I have a question...I don't have any hot glue, and none of that stuff....Is there a way I can use tape to put it together? I have everything else I need, just not the hot glue... I apologize if this question is stupid, or bothers you!!
Thanks so much for your kind words, I’m glad you liked the video and found it helpful. There is no such thing as a stupid question, so let’s try and figure this out. you could use super glue.. but be careful if you do, super glue is especially good at glueing stuff to your fingers or even your fingers to each other 😅. Also if you do use super glue do it somewhere well ventilated, the fumes can be pretty bad. To be honest tape might be your best bet. I’d say masking tape would be best (because it’s easiest to paint on top of) duck tape would probably work but it’s hard to paint on and standard clear scotch tape will be the most difficult, I think but it might work. Whatever tape you have to hand give it a go. Just follow the steps in the video but use tape instead of hotglue and it should work out. If you need to make it stronger try wrapping the entire horn in tape, it’ll also give it a cool new look. Hope this helps, Good luck and happy making.👍
@@HeyPatch Thank you for your response. Your answer to my question was a lot more helpful, especially since you actually answered it, haha... Thank you so much for answering though. I hope you have a good day, or night. 😊
That’s wicked! I went to a renaissance fair one, ‘‘twas bloody fantastic! I’d love to go to one again some day. Hope the costume turns out good and that you manage to find a knife 😉, a long bladed box cutter would work, and if your really stuck a serrated bread knife will work too but the cut will have tougher edges. Anyway best of luck with the costume and have fun at the fair. 👍
Thanks! I didn't end up finding a knife, but I measured pieces based on how much cardboard I had, and how wide I made the pieces, and when I glued them together, it turned out good! Your tutorial video really helped! I just finished mod podging them and putting tissue paper on them to add texture (I am being a ram-type creature) and I will paint them tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on my schedule.
Hi, really nice technique for making horns! I've made some myself using kitchen towel rolls and I've kinda eyeballed the measurements lol Though, do you have any idea how we can make the horns smooth? I've tried papier-mache, clay and putty but they don't turn out so well... Anyway, awesome work, keep it up! :)
Thanks man, If ya want smooth horns using the technique in the video I’d suggest using thinner card, like cereal box card or even construction paper, then do some papier-mâché on it, wait for it to dry and sand it down with some 80 grit sandpaper the do another coat of papier-mâché. Keep doing it getting finer with the sandpaper each time (80-120-240). Hope that helps 👍
Thanks 😁 No not really, I dress up occasionally but I’ve never been to a con. Although i would like to one day. But mostly I just really enjoy building costumes and props. (They usually just end up in a shelf)😂
Wow, you have such talent. You should go to one soon, you’d really admire the amazing cosplay people come out with, their quite inspirational. Are you into like World of Warcraft type fantasy cosplay and/or anime type cosplays? The A-Kon I went to this year there was two people dressed as Ryuk from Death Note. It looked like realistic perfection.
THANKS 😁. Yeah Hopefully I’ll get to a con sometime soon, Most of the props/costumes I’ve Mande or want to make are from movies. I’ve never played WOW, but I’m a fan of all sorts of stuff from pure sci-Fi to dystopian apocalyptic or fantasy I love it all. If i think it looks cool and I want it I’ll make myself one 😂.
Yeah it should, or you could use PVA, but you might need to use some clothes pegs to hold the pieces together whilst they dry. To be honest I’d highly recommend getting a hotglue gun, they are super cheap and will come in handy for so many projects. Good luck and happy making.👍
I can at least say one reason a horn video would be extra popular: Have been trying to find nice horns for Puck (A Midsummer Night's Dream) and practically all the horns I could get were "demonic" black or red. When all you want is a nice little trickster jester guy who is somewhere between a satyr and a forest fairy, those "alluring" "demonic" horns are just wrong and vulgar. (To my mind, if I should make Ole Nick himself, his horns would still be a natural ivory-to-earth-brown, not black or red). So even for someone like me who is not a real cosplayer, just *very* enthusiastic about halloween and carnaval ("fastelavn", where I come from), horns are something you end up having to make yourself. Well - from one frustrated fancy-dress enthusiast I can just say thank you for your thorough and simple explanation. I think I can do this. **** Actually, a video on how best to make them stick somewhere on your head without being glued to your hair would be quite welcome.
You could use other glue but you’d probably need to hold it together wit tape while the glue dries, you can buy a glue gun pretty cheep and it’ll come in handy for loads of projects, I highly recommend getting one.
I know this is like a SUPERRRR Late Comment but how would you attack them to a head-band? If anyone has suggestions I would greatly appreciate them o3o
I’d say hot glue would be best, fill the open end of the horn with a circle of cardboard then hot glue it to the headband for extra strength you could hot glue another circle of card underneath the headband (sandwiching the horn to the headband) also for stability I’d go for a wider head band and not a narrow one. I’m sure you’ll figure something out that works for you. Good luck and happy making 👍
I haven’t tried that myself, my suggestion would be to use thin cardboard or even the type of card a cereal box is made from. That will make more rings to work with and should mean you can make longer horns, then ya just gotta make a bunch of horns, stick then together and presto you have antlers 😁. Hope it works out for you. 👍
Love how imperfect your video was...refreshing, and genuine indeed.

Actually, a video on how best to make them stick somewhere on your head without being glued to your hair would be quite welcome.
Who is watching in 2020
How long is each
can you blow it and it makes the same sound
Me trying to make home made horn because of my money limit this helps a lot as the thug life 🤣
It's still a pen though no big deal
You don't suppose this design would work for a blowing horn, thoughts?
Not if you are supposed to actually be able to make sound with them. If it just needs to *look* right ... yes, of course.
What could you use instead of a hot glue gun for this? x
I’m going to show the krampus story to my bullies
That’ll show em’
Is there anything else you can use if you don’t have a hot glue gun? Or it’s that the only choice?
Good luck and happy making 👍
has anyone tested this technique with antlers?
I haven’t tried that myself, my suggestion would be to use thin cardboard or even the type of card a cereal box is made from. That will make more rings to work with and should mean you can make longer horns, then ya just gotta make a bunch of horns, stick then together and presto you have antlers 😁. Hope it works out for you. 👍
@@HeyPatch Thank you. I'll try this out!
