    That transient shaper you put on completely transformed the track! I've just recently been getting into using transient sharpers a lot, and it's crazy what they can do, especially for drums, when you apply limiting after! Even the top end of the vocals pop out a bit more when you turn it on from off, it's insane.

    5:30 1-First thing I would arrange absolutely is reducing a very loud resonant frequency around 1380 hz coming from the guitar with dynamic eq. Piercing and harmonically off.
    2-Low mid a bit messy around 250 hz with too much instruments using a bit too much of that space.

    1. There's a kind of lagging low end - particularly noticeable at the end of every 8 bars. I often hear this phenomena on night club sound systems when 18 inch subs are used. When you go to a semi-isolated area in the night club (eg the bathroom) you can really hear this phenomena in lots of tunes. In the night club it adds vibe to the envirionment, but the musician in me is kind of disconcerted by it - even though it lifts the vibe in the nightclub.
    2. There's a clicking sound from the acoustic guitar strings. I personally like it, but it could be toned down a little bit.
    I think that's what you're talking about. Otherwise I have no idea what the problems are.

    IK this is an old vid, but because you show that processing that picks the guitar or vocals or drums etc and can focus the processing on the specific harmonic of that instrument, I wanted to ask. Have you seen Steinberg's new Spectral layers extension for Cubase, where you can load in a mix and ask it to separate out layers of the complete printed 2 track mix? You can peel of the vocals from a finished mix file like a hot knife cutting through butter, it's crazy. IDK how well it works in all situations, but seems to work really well compared to older solutions for doing this kind of processing. I wondered if you have seen it or used it what you make of it?

    Picked up that the transients were a bit too wild (didn't figure out it was the acoustique guitar yet, snare was bothering me) and picked up that the vocal is getting buried. Didn't pick up that the kick needs to be tightened up - but I agree that it sounds better with what you've done. You can hear that on 30 Buck Speakers in a not-optimized living-room btw. Did I ever fix such issues in mastering-stage? No, I usually revisit the mix. I guess that's one of the reasons it's hard to become a better "mastering-engineer" if you mostly work with mixes where you also have the full mix available.. you simply don't need to fix it in post. Also the problems I (have) am focussing on are usually a bit more relevant than the low-end fix you performed. But the transient-problems and finding the sweetspot for the vocals is something I am familiar with. Which tells me real-life-mixes are better than mine, but not CRAZY better.. this mix had serious problems.

  • @1loveMusic2003
    @1loveMusic2003 Год назад

    I heard the high hat and symbol was right down the middle where the vocal was. Maybe not a problem? Sounded weird to me right in the middle fighting with vocal.

  • @DaftFader

    My guess is the snare's compression is funky and jumps out the mix way too much and muddiness in the guitars? (listening on TV so might totally miss something wrong in the low end).

    Hi David, great video again ! I met an engineer telling me that stem mastering can be even more detailled as regular mastering. What is the difference between stem mastering and regular mastering, can you show us how to export stems in a proper manner, including the busses etc... in order to go to another studio for mastering.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  4 года назад +5

      Stem mastering is basically letting someone else half mixing your song, is that what you want? It's not better, it's something else. For the most part is used by those who can't afford a full mix, but they want more than just mastering, this is at least why my stem mastering clients do that. Ideally, stem mastering shouldn't be needed, because it means your mix has so much to be fixed that you can't really do it with regular mastering, this sometimes happens, mix can't be reopened and you have the stems. But it should not be a go-to really unless you do it for the 1st reason

    • @artlucas2546
      @artlucas2546 4 года назад

      @@mixbustv Thanks David clear to me, this is more a mix-related issue as I understand it, when the mix is in good condition, you do not need stem mastering, regular mastering will do the job for the final release from that point on. Ok, looking forward to more content from your channel. Greetings from Belgium.
