This LP, Paul's Boutique, held the record for most samples in an album at the time with over 100 and was the impetus for much of the anti sampling laws that followed. This album is pure genius and was ranked #125 on Rolling Stone's list of all-time best LPs. Love this track

"Paul's Boutique" broke lots of ground and was a HUGE step forward for the guys... but "Check Your Head" was their start-to-finish masterpiece. I haven't heard another album that eclectic rooted in hip-hop--EVER! They just oozed talent and love of life.

Paul's Boutique was the follow up to Licensed To Ill. Not a lot of people "got it" at the time in 1989 and was a commercial failure...but it was innovative and set the table for their rise to hip hop legends. They used sampling right and it was the blueprint for guys like DJ Shadow to create masterpieces..."Endtroducing".

They came out a little after Run DMC. They both had Runs brother Russell Simmons as a manager. Russel and Rick Rubin started Def Jam who put out Beasties first record it was produced by Rubin who also produced a few records for Run DMC. The two groups were close and toured a few times together one being the Together Forever Tour. Early Beasties definitely got some of their flow from Run DMC.

Beastie Boys came up in the 80's rap scene w/ artists like Run DMC, L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, etc. They were 3 Jewish kids from NYC and they knew they couldn't do what their peers were doing... so, they made their own style and flow. Decades later, their work still sounds fresh and not dated like most pop artists of that era.

As far as influences go, the Beastie Boys' biggest influence were The Treacherous Three. They were a hip hop group that literally consisted of 3 MCs (Special K, LA Sunshine, Kool Moe Dee) and 1 DJ (DJ Easy Lee) and were known for finishing each other's lines.

RUN DMC was about a year or so before the beasties ('84-85). We used to spit both their lyrics at each other at recess. They were both DefJam. AdRock got LL's demo to Rick Rubin not long later. The beasties admitted that their first hip-hop/rock album "license to ill" was kind of a goof, but an imitation of RUN DMC with their own flavor. It was a hit and they realized they had something. No beastie boys album sounded like the last. Their signature sound was doing something different every time, but they still brought positivity, story-telling and fun with each album. They were a blast and I miss them. RIP MCA

People have no clue how important the Beasties were to NYC and the rap scene. Just Ad Rock listening to demos while hanging around Rubin and bringing his attention to this kid rapping... that 15 year old was LL Cool J. That's how deep in this thing they are. Watch Check it Out live on David Letterman and the Glasgow concert. I knew them when they opened in CBGBs. Those days everyone was creating, NYC was broke and burnt. Hung out there, and the Loft, then the Fever in the Bronx... Everyone was hanging everywhere and it was glorious. Whether Melons, Silver Shadow, with the queens and all at Mudd, Danceteria or the lower East Side raves where Madonna (who was a waitress back then), would hang out. It was a great time. Too bad the young ones will never have that experience. Back to Beasties... We could talk the early tours, bringing in a new crowd, tours stretching out around the globe vs. local/US. Just the innovation in sampling, production, fish eye lens in vids... loads of innovations. Too bad you never saw them live, insane.

RUN DMC came first - I think the only similarity you're hearing is that there was a certain style about early rap which was just part of the genre and how it was back then. Beastie Boys were always unique and their passion for rap music made them innovators of the genre. Run dmc actually knew them before their first album debut - I remember a member of DMC saying they heard an advanced copy of beasties first album and knew it was going to be a hit. I think Beasties took DMC on tour with them for their first album
