🇬🇧 About 60 kilometers from Toledo is CONSUEGRA, on the horizon you can see its famous windmills. Or are they giants to fight against, as Don Quixote thought in his madness?
Once at the top of the hill you can see the colors, the infinite landscape of the plain and see these 12 mills that are among the best preserved in all of Spain. They all have nicknames related to Don Quixote, although the one known as "Sancho" stands out, because it has all the machinery of the 16th century. If you want to see them inside, the “Bolero” mill is always open to visitors.
Consuegra is part of the DON QUIXOTE ROUTE, a route through various towns around one of the most famous books in the entire history of literature: Don Quixote de La Mancha, written by Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century.

Hola! I just watched the video. So these are the windmills in your 'Walking Spain' channel banner image! Very symbolic of Spain, I guess I should have known the connection to Don Quixote. When I was taking Spanish in high school, we learned about Don Quixote, although I never actually read the novel. The video made me think of the English phrase "tilting at windmills" which, I believe, is inspired by DQ. I like the phrase, and always thought it meant 'fighting in vain' but I wanted to make sure - so I looked it up. I guess it has multiple meanings, but I think I'm good. 😉
Anyway, back to the video. The view of the plains is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the landscape of eastern Colorado in the American West - just before the Rocky Mountains begin. It does seem infinite. Close up at 22:28, the grasses seem like brush strokes of a painting. From the top of the hill, the city/town below (that's Consuegra?) looks beautiful as well. Looks so peaceful from above.
I noticed what looks like lights that surround the windmills at the base. If so, they must looks quite spectacular lit up at night, especially from the town below, or from off in the distance. Also, most of them seemed to have wooden beams attached to the ground. Is this for structural support? I noticed they seem to connect to the rod that holds the windmill blades - maybe for support when the wind blows?
Amazing to think they were built in the 16th Century. The new ones that they build today might be more efficient, but they sure ain't more beautiful. 😁

Yes, it would have been an unforgivable decision not to film a tour there after putting those windmills as a banner image 😄 It really was a wish that I had since I started this channel, so I can say that I have fulfilled one of my wishes. It was also the first time I had visited these windmills so it was an amazing experience to be there and watch the sunset next to the windmills. This scenery exceeded all my expectations.
Oh! I did not know that in English you would also use that expression, in Spanish we use the expression "lidiar con molinos de viento" (whose literal translation would be "cope with windmills") and that it has the same meaning that you have described. As you say, it is inspired by Don Quixote. In Spanish we have several expressions and phrases inspired by the book but I did not imagine that they were also used in English. Thanks to you I just found out 😉
By the way, I haven't fully read Don Quixote either 😓, it's a difficult novel for today's people to read because it uses ancient Spanish that is often not understood.
Really! This landscape is similar to Colorado! Without a doubt, thanks to you I discover many new interesting things 😄 I appreciate it. Really, this landscape has always reminded me of some movies set in the rural part of the United States, the first movie that comes to mind is the farm of Clark Kent's adoptive parents in Superman from 1978. The landscape of central Spain is a immense plain that seems to have no end.
You are right, Consuegra is the town below the hill. It is a small town that has some interesting monuments, although in Spain it is undoubtedly known for its landscape of windmills. As you say, I think that Peaceful is the best word to define what you feel there, it is one of the most peaceful places I have visited in Spain.
Yes, both the mills and the castle are lit up at night and it's really spectacular. After filming the tour, I returned to the starting point and stayed to watch the sunset and how the lighting came on, as I said, it was a unique experience to see the mills and the castle standing out at night. One detail that I liked is that while the lighting of the mills was white, the one of the castle was reddish. It's a shame that Gopro has poor image quality when shooting in low light, otherwise I would have shot them at night as well. Regarding the beams, I don't know exactly what their function is either, although I think it may be what you mention.
Completely agree with what you say at the end. As a curiosity, in this area there are also huge extensions with modern mills. It is possible that in some places they are close to each other.
