- Blimey! What a moment this was. Four mighty Rolls Royce Merlin engines roaring full tilt over our heads. Nothing finer ;)
Don't forget to watch out for the guy waving in the front of the Lancaster, he's sat in the bomb aimer position.
As I zoomed in close to the nose of the Lancaster bomber, I could see a hand wearing a white glove, waving to the airshow fans on the hill. Just brilliant!

You could not imagine it. I bet there's still folk that live near RAF scampton that remember being little kids seeing and hearing all those lancs taking off and returning. What a sight to behold. I get goosebumps seeing Lancaster flying and hearing the Merlin engines. I get so overwhelmed with emotion

There is no such thing as a Bombardier in the RAF. The man was waving from the Bomb Aimer's blister on the Lancaster. A Bombardier in the British armed forces holds the rank of a Corporal in the Royal Artillery.
simply called "the Bomb Aimer" surely...? Always referred to as the Bomb Aimers position in the nose, from where he called out to the pilot which way to move the plane until his bomb sights were on target

There were bombardiers in the RAF, you can hear the pilot during a Lancaster raid talking to him as they came under fire over Berlin in a video.
I am German - thanks god I have been born after the war. The elegant Spitfire and Lancasters are beautiful machines and I am extremely happy they are no more used as weapons but to be presented as marvels of technology in airshows. I feel pitty for all these poor joung men that lost their lives in a senseless battle. All we can do is to put military machinery into display and never again into warfare.

A bunch of special guys in Hamilton Ontario Canada have rehabbed an incredible Lanc and it flew over my home in Oakville, Ont for 10 yrs at maybe 5- 10,000 feet. It was incredible!!
The sound, the speed, the impact was fantastic… and drove my wife crazy as I sprinted out to see it EVERY time.
It never got old and i’d often call my dad so he could here it… he grew up being bombed in england and Merlins meant freedom and NEVER giving up.

If you live in Hamilton, you get to see it quite often in the spring and summer. Those 4 Merlins give off an awesome audible warning of it's approach..............😉😁👍
Just to hear them literally brings tears to your eyes as it reminds you of all those so many thousands of young men who didnt come back.

The lancaster is just beautiful. It gives me a chill up my spine every time I see it. I remember what those heroes did in those machines.

The Spit is no doubt the most beautiful plane ever built. Watching it always brings tears to my eyes. And that sound!
Great sights and sounds from these fine British engineering marvels. The Spitfire wing design is thee most beautiful wing design there is, and to think this was designed and put into service in the 1940s when it was very much needed. Thanks for the comment 👍
I live in Lincolnshire and that very plane has flown over my house numerous times, the Vulcan did too before it was grounded. I was lucky enough to see both the Canadian Lanc and ours fly together too a few years ago. Such distinctive sounds. It sends a tingle down your spine. Amazing.
I live in Toronto, which is about 60 km from Hamilton where ours is kept, so I'm lucky enough to have seen it fly by my home more than a few times. Would love to have the British one brought over to see them fly side by side here as well.
@@davidreichert9392 Hi David. Yea it would be terrific. You might not know but not far from here there is another Lancaster that is privately owned and that is slowly being made airworthy. I had a taxi run in it for my 40th birthday present some years ago, I was in the front ‘bubble’. Absolutely spine tingling experience. It’s a long interesting story if you Google East Kirkby Aviation museum you should find it. So that would make two airworthy ones here aswell as yours. Lots of RAF stuff here in Lincolnshire.
@@jfro5867 There was an attempt to make another one airworthy in British Columbia but I think that they've changed the plan to a static display. Next time I'm Blighty side I'll be sure to check it all out. Shame that the Aussies don't have their airworthy.
I live within sight of the Hamilton airport and I’m right under the departure path for runway 24…..so every time the Lanc takes off, I get a low altitude full throttle pass….and I come out of the house to watch ( and LISTEN ) to it go EVERY SINGLE TIME…..nothing sounds like 4 merlins. We used to have a Hawker Hurricane but it was destroyed in a hangar fire in 1993 along with a Spitfire Mark IX ( and 3 other aircraft ) that was on loan to the museum

My dad used to see these superb Lancs coming in to land at Gander, piloted skilfully by women who flew them from being newly built at Malton. They would stop to re-fuel before going across the pond to England. His crew kept the runways in good repair and clear of snow for these heavy birds. So many women played a big part in WW2 regarding aircraft production and handling.
Women back then were the goddesses to behold! I bet they married quickly to breed a great generation! Women of that caliber are the rarest treasure to have at your side! Today's women don't hold a matchstick.. But to fly those birds.. The sound of the engines makes my heart pound.
Yes and its both sad and disgusting that after the war, those samewomen weren't even considered or mentioned until many many years later by the government or the RAF>

That brought tears to my eyes. My father was a Lancaster bomb aimer, and seeing the crew member waving from my father's station made me think about what it must have been like for him.

Yes, my father was a tail and midupper gunner in Lancasters ( RAAF 460 SQD ). They have a Lanc and Spitfire on static display in Perth, Western Australia. Having a look inside and thinking od Dad at 15,000 ft up at night staring into the darkness for German Night Fighters brought tears to my eyes. If the Lanc had been in 460 colours I would have totally lost it....
My uncle held that position on a Lancaster, but sadly died on his first mission (as many did), aged just 21.
My Dad always maintained he came back to England at the end of the war, sat in the bomb bay of a Lancaster bomber.
My Grandpa was a tail gunner in a Lancaster.
Survived all his mission, which was quite a feat.
I had a school project to do about WWII and he rufused to talk about anything that happened or went on from the day it ended.

My American grandfather on my mother's side told us stories as little kids with him and the U.S. Army always winning. When we were older we learned sometimes he'd still cry for his dead friends, while he was sleeping, according to Grandma. If I remember right, he was involved in the bitter fighting in the Ardennes ("the Battle of the Bulge") as an infantryman.
I solemnly salute your late grandfather from across the pond.
I was very fortunate to have lived near biggin hill in the late 1960s and early 70s to see and hear those wonderful machines was an absolute honour especially on Battle of Britain day used to really look forward to that weekend each year.

Its amazing that since WWII so many things have been lost, but the one thing you still go and hear is the sound of the Merlin engine at airshows... there's so much history in sound. I never really realised that until now.
This beast flew right over my parents' house, flanked by a Spitfire and a Hurricane a few years ago. Was on its way to Yeovilton. The noise and the sight was breath-taking. My dad and I could hear them approaching and, being seasoned airshow vets, both of us instantly knew what it was, so we rushed out to the back garden to see them fly directly over us.
These are probably my two favourite aircraft. The Spitfire is undeniably beautiful and elegant, and the Lancaster seems so powerful in a way that very few planes were. Just imagine being privileged enough to get the chance to fly this thing again.
The sound of 4 merlins racing just gives me goosebumps, the Lancaster is a legendary aircraft and I'm honoured to have the luxary to see it fly
Imagine a thousand of these babies in one raid.....wow.....brings tears to my eyes that sound of 4 Merlins in close formation is just absolute sweet perfection
The British are justifiably proud of these two great warplanes, and the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered them.

in 1949 i was stationed R.A.F Lindholm and the end of the runway stopped just short of the bawtry rd and i was just under the port wing as a lancaster flew over my head i was massaged from head to toe with four merlin engines at full power with tears in my eyes with the sound and the joy of it

Yep, we saw the Canadian Lancaster flying alongside the British one here in Lincolnshire many times a few summers back -- including several sorties right over our house at relatively low-level. Awe-inspiring. Privileged to frequently see the British Lanc at low levels all over Lincolnshire (which is where it's based).

@@trevorsimmons1487 I’m the same. Every Saturday and Sunday during the summer, I run out to the backyard and then run to the front yard just to see it (and the Dakota DC-3 they have). Sometimes they cast a shadow on my house. The sound is like rich music. (Oakville, Ontario)

Wonderful! Recordings never do justice to the incredible sound of Spitfires or Lancasters. For me, they are the best sounding planes.
I will never tire of seeing a Lancaster, or the most beautiful man-made creation, the Spitfire.
As a child I fell in love with these aircraft and was obsessed with their role in ww2 (alongside the Hurricane and Mosquito).
I managed to see the two Lancasters flying at Eastbourne, and when they spent a few days at my local airport..
What a fantastic sight and sound. It's a shame she will be heading home in a few days.

They flew over Lincoln Cathedral a few weeks back with 4 Hurricanes and 4 Spits.
Heard them coming from a mile away and flew right over. A sight I hope to one day see again.

I heard a unique sound in the air while i was outside wrenching my 57 chevrolet so i dragged my head out from under the car and looked straight up at this Lancaster flying over our city. What a sight to see and even more beautiful was the sound of those motors.
Seeing a Lanc in flight and hearing those merlins roar almost brings tears to my eyes whether its the one from Hamilton Ont or the BBF flight... My late father done a complete tour (30 missions) on 550 squadron based at North Killingholme, as wop/ag it still makes me proud when I peruse his log book....
Oh Greg. You make me cry with your words. I cannot cope with the deafening roar of those engines without feeling HUGE pride in my fellow man. We must NEVER forget what our ancestors did...but on a more visceral level, the sound of those engines would make anyone go to war. You must be, and have every right to be, proud of your Dad. x

My great-grand father was an infantryman on the beaches at Dunkirk (and involved afterwards). I remember him saying before he died some 30 years ago now, that no sound had ever made him happier than the sound of the Merlin's of the Hurricanes overhead when they were trying to get off the beaches. (His platoon was the last to get off that stretch of beach). The sound of the Hurri, Spit, Welly and the Lanc settle my mind like nothing else.

Many of the british pilots who flew them long ago also have tears in their eyes,and its the same for our B-17s which are only 12 at last count here in the states.I love the british and how they like us sacrificed so much to so few.

TheSirjohn2012 My Dad was very lucky to do the full 30 tour, and I loved to hear the stories that he told getting coned, night fighters etc and he did manage to get inside the Cdn Lanc when it was in Kingston Ont. but whe didnt know that their was a 550 squadron reunion every year until after he passed away... The B17 crews had a bad time daylight bombing and improved slightly when they got the full fighter protection from the Mustangs with drop tanks..Many thanks for your kind words.

I hear the canadian one all the time flying over my house. Low passes everytime. On rememberance day a B-25 and a hercules fly together with the lancaster. awesome sight to see.

My dad was a tail gunner in the lank, got through the whole war, had a spell in hospital after a shot in the shoulder, his crew were lost and he finished his tour with another crew (didn't have too ). Emotional to see the Lankaster. My dad made it to 93, love him loads !

I remember a few years ago two of them flew over my house on their way into Biggin Hill. That's a rare sight and absolutely incredible.

My dad took off like that in a Lanc 30 times during the war( he was the navigator), and they returned safely every time.

My father was also a navigator he did forty missions 156 squadron Pathfinder DFC he went as a volunteer from South America he very rarely talked about it and said how unnecessary it was like what is happening now!

and to think those things would fly in huge numbers at night... world war 2 was truly mind blowing.
I'm slightly more wowed of that fact for B17's, which were more heavily armed, older, slower and flew in a formation that was bigger than the biggest british formation of lancaster, halifaxes and lincolns!
I still like to say the Lancaster is the scariest looking of them all, its massive and looks less like a bomber, and more like death. xD

peepeevagi The Lanc's flew deeper into enemy territory, carrying a much larger bomb load and no co-pilot or fighter escorts. But, both the USAAF daylight bomb raids & RAF night time bomb raids were carried out by some of the bravest, selfless people to whom we all owe a sincere thank you to.

It is a very beautiful and dignified looking aircraft.. Reminds me of the sacrifice of so many young men of both the UK and the US to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in World War II. We should never forget them. If one of them were 25 years old, they would look at him as an old man. You think not so, I remember as a 20 year old in Korea having a squad leader who was 25 and a Vietnam vet. He seemed light years beyond us in maturity, perspective, and life's experiences. Now that I look back, I realize he was young like us, but what a man at the time.

Unfortunately they died for the shit we live today, and today hundreds of thousands are also dying because of the same monsterminds.

I lived near Southend on sea and one day I heard the gorgeous sound of Merlins. I looked up and the Spit, Hurri and Lanc were having to circle as permission to land was not granted. It was like having your own show. You have captured the identical sound and what a joy. My bucket list has the back seat of the spit on it but prob never happen. Oh well.....
You'll be happy to know there will be 2 flying Lancasters side by side this year in England The one from Canada is going overseas in the fall

I'm American, but I'm an avid fan of all sorts of military aviation,along with an online British friend of mine. This is literally the closest thing to the American AC-130. I swear. I love both of those beasts of the air.
How is a Lancaster bomber "literally the closest thing to an AC-130"? The two aircraft have nothing in common other than having four engines. The Hercules isn't even a bomber.

Woo Hoo! Aviation erotica ! I saw the Canuc Lanc at Geneseo NY back in 90, and it was incredible. Especially when flying with 4 B-17s and a B-24J. Wish I could see and shoot them together. Thanx for posting this, and I love that Spit in the post war scheme.

I have only seen one spitfire in flight after all those airshows since the 1960s. It was impressive, I think it was a Mk. 14 four years ago in Burnett, TX.
Recoil Spring.you surprise me,having only seen one Spitfire.I toured the US a few years ago and visited the Confederate Airforce base (then in Harlingen,near Brownsville) I was really impressed with aircraft ,all airworthy.and the friendly staff.I'm sure they had an Spitfire in the collection.I think they've moved to Midland TX now,but worth a visit.I'm from the UK, i found Texas a great place to visit,and the people really friendly.Although a bit daunting until you get used to nearly every pickup truck having a gunrack!

As an infant of 3 I was once in this huge building with a high roof (a hanger) whilst visiting my father's base. This massive plane taxied in with roaring loud engines; later I noted that it was a Lancaster. When I told my mother years later she said ''that's amazing that was during the war.''

When I was a kid we lived right under the flightpath that the BBMF used to take if they were heading to RAF Stanmore (now closed) The Lancaster would past right over our house at about 200 feet with a Spitfire to one side and a Hurricane to the other, this used to happen at least twice a year

I simply LOVE these WW2 era aircraft. I'm old enough to remember the change over from propeller passenger aircraft to jet passenger aircraft. As a very small child I used to watch the Lockheed Constellations fly over our house arriving & departing the airport not far from out house. I work at that airport now, getting ready to retire soon.

Lovely!. Remember being at Ascot Race course back in the eighties at the end of the mile for a heart foundation charity day. Heard a noise like summer thunder, looked up and the BBMF were coming down the straight at very, very low level, Spitfire on port, Hurricane on starboard side of the Lanc. As they came to the end of the straight the fighters 'peeled' off flat chat and climbed away. Wonderful!.

Oh, that sound is the most incredible sound to ever hear it breaks your heart to think they flew out and many did not return so sad but you can't take away that sound it lives forever in our hearts.
