Hey Tito, great video! I had the Sirui Saturn 35mm. I wasn't too crazy about the pin distortion. However, I think fixing it in post works best. Also, putting a Glimmer Glass 1 filter helps taking the sharpness off the picture a bit. I agree, its not a very fast lens but a the compromises weight more on the positives

Got it last week. It's dope :D, combined with my S5IIX. I just only need 0.5 diopter for some close-ups.

Sirui Saturn seems like a step in the right direction. I haven't messed with Sirui due to the inconsistent squeeze and overly saturated flares. I can correct the pincushion distortion and use diopters for closer focus. Now, offer an EF and PL option and I might have to pick one up.

Its the perfect travel companion! I have shot so much with it in exotic locations - mainly with the SONY A7SIII. Its also great for surreptitious shooting because it looks like you're taking pics with a standard telephoto lens! It doesn't quite deliver the spacial depth that I get with the big 75mm beast but for all-round ease of use - I love it. I will be sorely tempted by the 90mm version.

    • @AlphaCentauri24

On Sony A7Siii you would get the aspect ratio of 2.83 with this lens! Its distractingly wide. You need open gate video recording for this 1.6x anamorphic lens.

Seems pretty nice, but really would trade a little size/weight for a faster aperture like maybe T1.5 or so. I would say this is even mostly useful mostly for those wide and high shots

As this lens is made for full frame coverage, when you use it on a camera with an aps-c sensor like the fx30 for example, will the characteristics around the edges be less prominent? (like e.g. distortion) Additionaly the aperture value of 2.9 would give you more depth of field on an aps-c sensor. Would there still be enough seperation to the background?

I know this one is fairly wide, but for image continuity, I wish they’d add a 24mm or wider. I’d like to use these on my C70 and R5c but the 35mm isn’t very wide. If they did 24, it’d have to have a MUCH better close focus though. Also, 60mm and 90mm are interesting choices. I’ll be excited to see how those look! So glad they have a neutral flair option.

I'm looking to rent an anamorphic lens for this same purpose: a great talking head video that will enlarge my studio. I did see you have a solid rig with what looks like 'lidar'. Would I have to invest in such equipment to keep the focus on me ALL the time or do you think I can get away with sharp videos if I were to stay still? I'd also love to use it for anamorphic photography. What are your thoughts?

  • @dpc4548
    @dpc4548 11 месяцев назад +6

All these "meh" anamorphics only use pointless mounts. They know the pros don't want them, so I guess they don't even bother using PL or EF with proper ends. At least Loawa and Great Joy had the mounts, just limited versions of them.
The point is, we still don't have any decent options under $6k. It's a shame, but we can hope.

Excellent. Thank you for this review and thoughts. I currently have the Sirui Venus 50mm t2.9 1.6x. It’s really controlled well for pincushion distortion. I was concerned by going to the 35mm Saturn due to its excessive pincushion distortion. I did see you are using Davinci Resolve to correct distortion. Do you have any distortion corrected 35mm Saturn footage you could please share? The samples you shared here were un-corrected, as they should of been for this review. I’m loving the S5IIX !

intesting aspect.. Sirui themselve say that the Saturn Version uses sophisticated aspherical lenses, which is not known for the Venus version... I would wish a direct comparison of both lens types for the following categories: distortion, vignetting, sharpness and contrast..

It has the name on it "anamorphic" but does it have the game? I'd say no. Even if the spec sheet says it's 1.6x squeeze. It doesn't have a single anamorphic character. No flares no oval bokeh and no distortion. I bet it's hardly distinguishable from a 24mm spherical lens.

2 aspects here to consider: 1. there are some anamorphic characteristics, but due to the wider perspective, they are not as strong as with longer focal lengths 2. it not a really front anamorphic construction, the anamorphic bloch seems to be put in the middle or first third of the elements... as I understand, the anamorphic effects are weaker the more the anamorphic block is put to the back of the lens and nearer to the sensor..

2:10 - when the optics are the same, what's the point in chosing one over the other? Or is it just when you need the cinebulk to impress clients?
2:53 I am aware it's a figure of speech, but there's really nothing fair about it :o
The bokeh seems very subtle and displeasing, but at least the answer to "how wide does it go" is finally answered: "yes"
on another note. The coatings are very green, but they obviously don't bother when a tiny flashlight is used. What about natural light like the sun, which gets nasty green flares out of common modern lenses - would the Sirui also turn on here?
