  • Singapore Gets New PM After 20 Years: Who is Lawrence Wong? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    Lawrence Wong has become Singapore's new Prime Minister. Wong took the oath today and became only the fourth Prime Minister in Singapore's history. The outgoing Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, has stepped down after about 20 years in power. The handover has been in the works for years. Wong was selected as Lee's replacement back in 2022. Who is Lawrence Wong, the man chosen to continue Lee Hsien Loong's legacy? Wong is the first Prime Minister to be born after Singapore became independent. He comes from a humble background, and worked as an economist in Singapore's civil service before joining politics.

    PM Lawrence Wong will be able to do better in the Singapore next election in 2025.
    Singaporeans including myself are confident in his leadership.
    Singapore leaders specially selected base on their are intelligent, well learned, proven capabilities and leaderships.
    Not just irresponsible ministers who knows little but only knows how to create disharmony in their own country for their own party sake and personal benefits.

    I have never been a fan of any politician, but Lawrence Wong is an exception. He's got that charm, yet that firm appeal to get people's attention. He did a brilliant job during the COVID pandemic, calming all of us in our times of despair and executing policies. I love that he's into guitar and music, and I'm hoping the arts sector gets some boost from him. Excited for him to guide us to the next 20 years.

      It's common practice in the Singapore government to move ministers around every few years so they have experience across multiple portfolios, especially, when the ministers are younger. And it's also not uncommon for some ministers to have more than one portfolio, for example being the lead minister for one, and also being the 2nd minister in another.

      Tharman (former Deputy Prime Minister and now elected President), as an ethnic Chinese Singaporean would have wished for him to be Prime Minister but he declined the post. A majority of us Singaporeans vote based on merit and not race. Perhaps you're not used to a heterogeneous society living in largely homogeneous India. But what works for us may not work for India. India is a massive country to govern with multiple languages and backgrounds. But before thinking of lifting a nation, think of living in harmony with thy neighbour. Having a century old beef with Pakistan doesn't help. I totally understand the history and links with territorism but we must move beyond peace, towards cooperation. Singapore was invaded and even massacred by Japan but we put history aside and focus on moving forward. Now Japanese live and thrive amongst us. And some trivia for you, our President's wife happens to be Japanese. Harbouring hate and prejudice inhibits the possibilities of progress.

    Since SG media loves to talk about Indian politics and so on, why not India media ask why Singaporean Indian Tharman Shanmugaratnam who is more qualified to be PM was given a ceremonious role as President. After all he was next in line in the political lineage after the former PM.

    • @johnroti
      @johnroti 24 дня назад +3

      Mr Tharman said in a video interview that he didn't want to take up PM role although he was offered. Secondly Tharman is not Singaporean Indian but Singaporean Tamil. His ancestors were Srilankan Tamil.

      Mr Tharman is great. Very much admired by Singaporeans. You can see the support they all gave him during the presidential elections. He won by a landslide. He decided long ago that he didn't want the post of Prime Minister. Go look it up in previous interviews.

    Singapore, the best country in Asia. Countries in the Asian continent can and should learn from Singapore. First of all there is no room for corruption. Secondly law and order are paramount. It feels so safe in Singapore and I speak from experience. Best wishes to the new PM. Perhaps I am asking too much from the other corrupt countries in Asia. It is too ingrained. Politicians, business folks, rich people, every body.
