  • This record was released some months prior to the January 1959 debut of the “Rawhide” TV series and was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington (who also wrote the Laine western themes “High Noon” and “Gunfight At The O.K. Corral”). Laine’s slightly different 1960 stereo version of this title is missing the whip cracks and most of Frankie’s “YEEHAW!” shouts.
CD audio, originally issued on 45rpm: Columbia 41230 - Rawhide (Washington-Tiomkin) by Frankie Laine, orchestra and chorus conducted by Jimmy Carroll

How was this not a hit in the U.S.? (It was in England.) Finally found a copy of this 45 today after years of searching, searching, searching.

It was a hit in the UK because of the film blues Brothers, they film was absolutely huge over here. Everyone knew about it. Everyone had seen it at least once, it’s a shame that it wasn’t a big hit in the US, as it should’ve been! You’re right.

And this was played on the radio in between rock and roll records? I can imagine, some teen at a Platter Party, after an Elvis song. She tells her friends, let's listen to this Frankie Laine record. But seriously folks, I like the song.

Slightly off topic, the version of "High Noon" that was in the Gary Cooper Grace Kelly movie xx which won the Oscar for best original song, was sung by Tex Ritter in the film.

Both this and the 1960 re-recording (with Johnny Williams conducting) bear the same tape number (CO 61058), which I'm sure gives headaches to many doing Western-themed compilations. Wholly different recordings, not just "a different vocal take."

Mel Brooks purposely didn't tell Frankie that the theme from "Blazing Saddles" was for a comedy!

Brooks had figured that Laine would have guessed that if MEL BROOKS was the producer, it was a comedy. When he realized that Laine was singing it straight, he made sure that nobody spilled the beans between takes.
