  • In the prime of his life, Fee Waybill of the Tubes, one of rock’s wildest frontmen was lured into a seedy parlor in the underbelly of San Francisco’s notorious red light district. The rocker was captivated by a young exotic dancer who slinked around inside an enclosed booth with hardly any clothes on. … Falling into a scam, Fee kept shelving out dollar bills, trying to engage in a conversation with the dancer, but she ignored him until he finally wised up and realized he was being a sucker! Fee Waybill eventually paid enough money for the woman to converse with him, and he asked her if she would like to be a dancer with his band. She refused to answer his question, and his session abruptly ended. They say ‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ but in this story…curiosity birthed the smash hit She's a Beauty. You’ll never believe what happened next… Seriously, this is one of those rock and roll song stories that’s stranger than fiction… and I’m gonna tell you all about what happened…free of charge, of course…NEXT on Professor of Rock.

Today we have the story of an 80s classic that most know by heart from a truly unique band that doesn’t get its due credit in our latest entry into #1 in our hearts… songs that absolutely should’ve been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 but for perplexing reasons came up just short so we right the wrong. This is one of these classic 80s singalong hits that everyone knows by heart but many middle-of-the-road music fans don’t know who sings it. I’m talking about She’s Beauty be the Tubes…..Known for his outlandish costume changes and character portrayals on stage, Fee Waybill, the frontman for the Tubes, was a spectacle in his own right. One of his main characters, Quay Lewd (a play on Quaalude), was a drugged-out British rock star wearing two-foot-tall platform shoes, a feather boa, and a long blonde wig.
Standing at 6 foot 4 in bare feet, Fee's Quay Lewd costume made him tower over 8 feet tall. Tubes' concerts were filled with explosions, smoke, chainsaws, and a daredevil aerial artist. The band often spent more on their elaborate stage antics than they earned from performing. One day, Fee was tooling around the Red Light section of San Francisco’s Missing District when he was transfixed on a sign outside of a seedy parlor called the Tenderloin that read “Pay a dollar- Talk to a Naked Girl.” Well, it just so happens Curiosity got the best of Fee, so he went inside. The experience inspired the conception of the biggest hit for The Tubes…1983’s “She’s a Beauty.”
Fee attended Arizona State University with plans to study oceanography, but he discovered a passion for acting and decided to pursue it instead. Eventually, he dropped out of college and, while hanging out in Arizona's Verde Valley, met his future bandmates Roger Steen and Prairie Prince. The guys eventually moved to San Francisco. To stand out from the other acts in the Golden City music scene, Fee brought to life a variety of memorable characters during the Tubes live shows.

@@JoseGrullon THAT'S the song I thought this was going to be about! I had this Tubes album on 8-track tape that I blasted in my 1970 Delta 88 Oldsmobile, my first car in 1981.
My dad was an audiophile and radio engineer who installed an expensive 8-track stereo with premium speakers in that car because he loved classical music at high volume.
Daddy gave me that very unsexy but safe "grandma" car because he wanted me to be safe, driving that 4 door land yacht! My friends laughed... until they got in my car and I played this tape at full volume. That car was invisible to police, another thing I loved about it.
As a teen, I loved hanging with my dad on weekends in the garage where I helped him do brake jobs and oil changes on that car, learned to fix minor problems and change tires.
I couldn't have loved that car more if it had been a Camaro!
Daddy was smart, and must have really loved me!☺🤗

He was actually in a few movies to including Of Mice And Men with Gary Sinese and John Malkovich, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Pulp Fiction among others.

SCTV was great, I loved that show especially Guy Caballero, the one episode where Joe Flaherty jumped up out of that wheelchair and took off running almost made me piss myself I was laughing so hard, they couldn't do something like that in this day and age, a character that fakes needing a wheelchair would have people going bonkers over it, social media would light up with protests and Flaherty's career would have been over, I'm surprised that wasn't dredged up from his past and he didn't get attacked for it before he passed away.

One of my dear friends once saw Fee in a bar. She recognized him and asked if he was him. He replied yes, but wanted to keep a low profile, since it was kind of a disco-ish bar.
I think the Tubes' best album was Remote Control (also produced by Rundgren). It was such a dynamic tour de force, with a fascinating concept. I remember listening to it when I talked to my high school sweetheart for the last time whilst I was at Uni. AS I hung up the phone, I heard the lyric "I won't see you anymore/and if that's what love is for/then I don't understand." How prophetic those words were!
Still... Remote Control remains one of my favourite albums.

Ok...Professor, I've got my ticket stub from the first time I saw The Tubes. I believe it was 1982. The "concert" was held at the Lambda Chi fraternity house in Chico, CA - California State University of Chico. I think I was 18 years old. Maybe 19. The Tubes were set up in a small room inside an old house. I think there were barely 100 people there. There were no spotlights, no stage, no nothing. I literally stood about 5-6' away from Fee during their performance. He had a big ole doobie he would take a hit from & then kept it between his guitar strings at the very top of the fret board. I don't have any photographs from that evening. We didn't take many pictures back then. After they were done playing, they stayed and hung out with all us students. I remember it being very fun but had never seen anything like it before. No one got out of control despite all the pot & beer floating about. I still don't understand why The Tubes were playing at a frat house in Chico. I think I heard one of the members of Lambda Chi knew the band through his father...who was some music guy...? I think about that night often and wonder - how did that event occur? I can send you a copy of my ticket stub. It's a pretty cool ticket (as tickets go). Can you find information about it? I've always wondered what exactly did I attend that night. I mean c'mon, I was standing 5' from Fee the entire time they played.

Yeah the whole thing was pretty strange. As I remember it, my buddy and I were at Tower Records, and a guy he knew asked my buddy if he liked the Tubes and told us they were playing at a frat that night. We told him he was mistaken and that they were playing the fairgrounds in a couple of months and pointed to the list of acts coming to town right there on the list of shows Tower had tickets for.
Anyway, I don't remember why they were playing that under the radar gig but you're right there weren't 100 people there . We walked up to the door and paid like $5 I think for the cover which got you in the door and a cup.
The only reason they sounded like crap was because it was too loud for such cramped quarters.

Heading into High School, I was a bit of an introvert. Just before my Freshman year, we packed up and moved several states away. As I headed into my 7th school change, (I'd comment that the only constant in my life was Kasey Kasum, btw)...I'd fallen in love with "She's A Beauty", which had just been released. I got talked into attending a "back-to-school" dance, where I was a complete wallflower with my new friends...then...that synth & guitar! I shouted, "I LOVE THIS SONG!" and almost sprinted onto the floor...and promptly started dancing with a SENIOR...lol...shell cracked, I danced with a member of each grade before the night was over and it kicked off two wonderful years, before we were on the move again! Thanks Fee! Oh, and btw...I should have paid better attention to the lyrics...because the "don't fall in love" (with a stripper) message was learned much later...and cost WAY more thsn a dollar...lol.

I promised her she wouldn’t be sorry and she would not be bored. Her mind was blown. She LOVED it. It was like nothing either of us had ever seen before.
Towards the end of the show Fee mentioned that the (then) new album Young and Rich would be out soon. He had a handful of promo copies that he tossed out to the audience. I was about half way to the back of the auditorium and I’m only 5’8” so I didn’t even stand up to try for one as everyone was going crazy grabbing at them. As I was watching the melee I saw one copy go skipping across everyone’s fingertips and Whoa! It literally landed in my lap. I clutched it with both hands as people looked at me with blood in their eyes. Hah! What a night.

I remember the Mtv video of "She's A Beauty" as "Riveting"! I love the whole cheesy carnival ride where the car bangs through the swinging doors, revealing the next scene. .. I also remember seeing the Tubes on SCTV with John Candy as the Fishing Musician.. .. So glad you brought up that reference, Professor! I can't think of the Tubes without remembering the Fishing Musician Sketch. .. Thank You Professor.

I bought this single in '83 and loved The Tubes since the album before, great band maybe the most criminally underrated ever.

    Love the tubes!
They finally found more success toning the act down, but the album the Tubes with WPOD, mondo bondage, boy crazy, what do you want from life etc will always be my favorite work by Fee & crew!!!
    Great effin album…

I saw them live Michigan in 1983. Warm up band was the Plimsouls and Leather Nun. My favorite songs are Power Tools and Let's make some noise. "Drums" was an awesome sight in person.

I knew it was The Tubes by the thumbnail picture of the guy with the long, curly hair. They were in a musical fantasy section of the movie Xanadu and I used to laugh like crazy at how wild his hair looked to me 😂
    And I love the song She's A Beauty😊

I fell in love with The Tubes when I was about 7 or 8 when I saw and heard them in the movie Xanadu, and then a few years later they released this “beauty”!

Prairie Prince was one of the secret weapons of The Tubes … a killer drummer with both the chops and an excellent groove; stick an imagination like Fee's, a producer like Foster and an Ax man like Luke on top of Prairie's steamroller … and you couldn't go wrong.

Saw them at the Totally Tubular Festival just last month. The whole show was a ton of fun, and I got to finally see one of my favorites live... Men Without Hats!

I remember seeing the Tubes when I was a teenager. When Momma saw the review of the show in next day's paper, I was in serious trouble for not leaving the show. Apparently, she was not as impressed with "Don't Touch Me There" as I was. LOL.

I remember seeing that THE TUBES would be playing on the Summer schedule at Kings Dominion in Virginia. On that schedule were some other awesome acts with The Cars, Night Ranger, and Heart. The 80s was an awesome time for a rock fan.

I have the album Outside Inside by The Tubes. Played the crap out of "She's a Beauty". Bought it in 1983, still in my record collection 41 years later. And yes, I sing to it as well while it's playing. Nice blast from the past Professor.

    Whaddya mean “nobody knows!?”
Fee Waybill has always been one of my favorite male vocalists. The Tubes have always been on my playlist!
The guitar solo in “She’s a Beauty” is killer!

I grew up in San Francisco, so the Tubes were a major fixture in my childhood. My parents would purposely drive way out of the way so we wouldn't pass wherever they were playing as the signs were usually off-color and would provoke awkward questions from my sister and myself. Probably the most surrealistic appearance of the Tubes was their duet with Olivia Newton John in Xanadu. I have no clue what the producers were thinking, but they were definitely the high point of the movie : )

Way back in the early eighties, I remember the Tubes appeared on a local Phoenix kids show. "Wallace and Ladmo", I do not remember which song/s they performed. "Wallace and Ladmo" are well worth the look, even Alice Cooper was on their show.

I love this song. I had absolutely no idea about the story of this song, or who sung it. Very cool! Thanks.
