Agreed. So much of what they sell as video gear is so expensive. A spring clamp to hold weights on a camera crane - when bought through a video store costs about 30 bucks. At a fitness store (exact same clip) $2.50. Marku's channel is really great and also very inspirational.
When I was thinking about making RUclips videos, before I got sick last year, I had made-up all these plans on how to use cheap fabric from Walmart or Jo-ann's, PVC/PE pipe and joints from the hardware store to make stands, spring-loaded clips from Dollar Tree, and Christmas lights to make all sorts of reflectors, scrims, cookies, soft boxes, etc (because I was broke). I even lucked out on finding 2 heavy-duty tripods at Goodwill for $10 each that made me think I could start a new life the following week. That was one of the last things I remember. A few days after getting those tripods I went into cardiac arrest and coma, but amnesia meant that was the last day I remembered. It would be a month before I came home. Solid video, Markus. In a grip truck they're called "silks" and they are made of...originally silks, but I think they're some polyester these days. Anyway, same thing. Don't spend big money, even if someone gave it to you, just get the PVC and use joints to lengthen or shorten the sides, clamp the sheet or bath curtain on. Give linen a try (a bit expensive) or even tissue paper (disposable and recyclable). Experiment! Caveats: Avoid using multiple lights behind the diffuser unless you can bring them close together or within a space where their light cones overlap in an even flow, otherwise you'll get multiple points of light and multiple shadows (which can be an effect you might like). Check and recheck your light balance, the diffuser can add enough color to change the color temperature of the light being diffused. Of course, move the diffuser closer to the subject to get a softer shadow and farther back to get a harder shadow, same as you would with a light.

Just found your channel and love your work. Especially loved how Cara hugged on you at the end of another video and how she was playfully mocking you in another. I have been using the bedsheet for a while now and love the window light it provides. It is also like spending 20 minutes retouching for how it softens skin.
YES... like the 4X4, portable, easy to setup, has frame! Never though of truly using a bed sheet, but this was the nicest softest light of all in this Video :) Thx to both of YOU!
I enjoy a lot of different types videos because I have a large number of interests but I really want to thank you for the presentations your deliver. Its always broken down well, you don't just hand us the pros of a particular item but the cons as well. Its takes an individual that really loves what he of she is doing to portray their passion in such an informative light. For someone like myself that is just starting to take a greater interest in photography your content is fantastic, excellent.
Bro, this is just what I needed! I'm a freelance videographer looking to invest in a large and soft light source but everything that fit that description was like $1,000 or more. This looks like the perfect solution 👌 I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the tips Markus. I am using a shoot through umbrella for diffusion. As a backdrop I use a curtain from IKEA, does not have to be IKEA obviously. It just happened to be what I had at home.

@@MarkusPix 1" PVC is about $12...and as long as you dont use glue...should come apart and go together easily...use the spa fittings instead of the plumbing ones...
@@deadendkid1968 yes it does and if you have issues, take a fine sand paper and lightly sand around the ends of the PVC where each piece enters the joints and you are good to go. Other benefits of PVC are that you can make just about any shape or design by heating the tube and forming it. Even a hoop if you want. There are plenty of examples on YT for that... It's easy enough to label what goes where if you intend to have it be portable. You can fill the base pieces with sand to weight it down where needed. It's cheap enough that without worry, you can drill holes in some of your tubes "don't drill your connecting pieces as they cost more than PVC tube" and insert eyelet bolts to be used with paracord and cheap carabiners found on e bay or wherever, to quickly tie it down where needed if you are outside or want to hang it indoors. The major downfall of course is that it isn't nearly as rigid as some metal frames so if you do not work in additional cross sections in taller/wider designs then it will sag in the middle. By introducing cross sections you may create shadows if the design isn't done right although being creative in where you place cross sections, you could create preferable patterns of shadow even. I could go one and on so the last thing I'll add is that you can install metal grommets on the bed sheet in the appropriate areas to again, use cheap carabiners but this time, instead of paracord use elastic cord to attach the sheet to the PVC frame keeping it taut.
You can fold the bed sheet on itself one or two times, creating a smaller area but more light diffusion. Must have stands and clips tp support, but you probably already have those.
You now can bye very cheap LED strips with control nobs and clue them to a cardboard in a grid form. You can fold the carboard and you are done. Cheap and easy. Also, they can change to any colors and fx.

3:00 "It is good to have an assistant with it..." and then the camera moves a little to the left showing a body-less assistant standing right there. So funny if you see it and I am sure totally unintentional.
I guess I'm going to have to go out and buy a cheap white bead sheet. I love the idea, and I have a very little used 10' wide backdrop stand to put it on. Thanks again, Markus and Cara.
The cheap bedsheet diffuser is a great, budget idea, but C-stands are expensive. A budget alternative to those would be microphone boom stands. These can often be found on sale and are a great option for low-weight stand needs.
Try Garden Fleece (used for keeping the frost off plants). Or, plastic dust sheets - I made a simple frame from 1 inch pvc plumbers pipe (which comes apart easily). Both ideas work a treat.
This is quite a cinematography crew style, maybe that's why it works so well xD. All the time they use expensive gear, but simple in function, just a piece of white cloth, whatever is your preference and lots of structures to hold it high and low, along the light itself. In fact, I learn doing that way, sadly I work alone, but If i had an assistant or a studio I would do those tricks all the time. Who needs a nicely build softbox with flash mount when you can get a big 5 in 1 reflector and use the transparent cloth xD Of course, there are reasons and different needs, but if soft light is the only matter, big cloths are the absolute king.

Fantastic video. I felt bed-sheet looks more diffused, natural. And she(model) looked overall perfect skin tone, hair with the bedsheet diffused light source.
Always nice to see Kara. And I agree the bed sheet diffused light looks great on Kara. And I do also like the $150 diffuser. It's light and portable and relatively cheap. I use a staple gun to attach green screens to a 1x3 on the ceiling which I screw in with 2 screws. I'm off to Good Will to get a cheap white sheet to attach to the ceiling in front of the 4' single light florescent lights I have loaded on light stands. Great suggestion.
Obviously different fabric give different effects. I wonder if silk is good and the diff with linen or rayon, nylon, synthetics in general, or layers. You could punch holes in a sheet and layer another sheet on top so you get spots. You can create light patterns by layering 2 sheets and cutting patterns in the one on the light source side. You can attach the edge of the sheet(s) to a bar and rolled it up line a blind , so you hang the bar at the ends and just pull down on the sheet so the sheet hangs. Then clip a few weights to the bottom to hold it straight by using different amounts of weight and a fan at low speed, you can get cool effects. If you wash a cotton sheet at high heat and high dryer heat, you can make the sheet more see through. You know how cotton sheets get after to s of washing. Best to use cold water and low fryer heat to preserve the cotton, but for this purpose you can use the heat to get the effect you want. Great video, again. Your assistant is smart. Let her talk more. Her Input can be valuable. It's cool to let her participate in your videos. She can appeal to a lot of people for her ideas. It's nice to have 2 different ideas and points of view. She can suggest things, being the artistic input, and you can make it happen on the tech side. I always think it's good to take advantage of all the strengths of your people. It's surprising how much value someone can have despite nit having experience. The lack of experience is often refreshing and will provoke new ideas.
Sure, it looks great with her standing behind it, hehe. I'm kinda thinking cut a 4x4 bed sheet, pvc frame on the end of a simple pole held by whatever is around for a really low cost. Thanks, for your videos again!
Maybe the South Americans were selling wall size indoor "garden" lighting, as photography lights. But were actually for growing indoor gardens; ha! I don't know, You are very informative and fun. I'm having fun learning to Create videos as well and they suck, but the hard lights are coming on! I subscribed to keep your input in my inner circle of influencers and educators. Cheers! Peace eh
Could use some advice on cheaply/safely rigging up stands or frames to create diffusion things. I'm new to this. What clamps do I want? Do i need a crossbar? When do you need c stands, or are light stands always fine? How do you fit these into small spaces? You probably answered these in other videos that I haven't gotten to yet, I've only watched about 10 haha
What?! No link for the bedsheet? LOL! I liked the look of the bedsheet the best. It just wrapped the light all around her body with no harsh shadows. I think I'll buy one and tell my fellow photographers that I had wished I paid $1,200 for the scrim. If any of them say they want to get one, I'll just say you can have this one for $120 dollars. I'll be a multi-millionaire in no time :D
Simply, a genuinely super fun and easy going explanation. I'll check out other videos. Thanks for the info and showing some simple practicality! New sub, btw!
Plus pipes on the $1,200 unit look like cheap PVC. $450 nice too.$150 Yeppers the BedSheet is great. Plus you can double it up to get more blockage. Always love your videos.... For the bed sheet you can go to Home Depot and for a few bucks more get PVC Pipe to make a frame too. ;) Might bring the cost up from $10 to at most $20 though .... ROFL TY again. I always stop what I'm doing to watch your videos when I get notified. They are that good my friend. :)

Cool Markus! I've heard of the wall of sound.............. How did you know that I need this right NOW!?!?!?!?! I don't yet have these professional lights, but I have bucket full of LED worklights. Maybe not the correct Kelvin, hope to fix that in post. Love to you and Cara!
If you love the bed sheet you should try my grandpa's idea of using a "sheer shower curtain liner." He's from the FILM era and a Cold War Vet, so CHEAP/Low Cost is the way he taught himself and he is passing all of that knowledge on to little ole me! Have fun and stay safe. ~Alexa Shaw
@@Wh33lsofFortune Hahahaha!! Grandpa just came in and I told him about my comment and he said: "Don't forget we live on a tropical island, so tell him the liner works double duty. Diffusion for sun and rain blocker for that instant change in weather." I nearly fell out of my chair laughing so hard.
You have given so much information from your point of view. You go to the extreme to test your equipments out, like even in the hot burning sun ☀️. Now, for this video, what would the best bedding material fabric be? I ask this because of the many types of blends. There are just your cotton; cotton /polyester; & even satin, etc. I have also noticed that there are various density for satin materials. I have satin white here at home which is to me more of a semi thick & yet not so thin density to it; but I would like to know what is your preference / what you used in this video; because the bed sheet was the most sharpest coming through.

Marcus reveals what I suspect to be another Hollywood secret lighting technique!
Marcus reveal A LOT of Hollywood secrets.I am happy he does. Makes us better at the craft.
Cheers! Peace eh
Great videos Markus. You have a new subscriber.
A shower curtain is fantastic as well!
Thanks for the share. My biggest hangup, light diffusion. Will definitely try the bed sheet setup.
thanks Markus, love your work
Could use some advice on cheaply/safely rigging up stands or frames to create diffusion things. I'm new to this. What clamps do I want? Do i need a crossbar? When do you need c stands, or are light stands always fine? How do you fit these into small spaces? You probably answered these in other videos that I haven't gotten to yet, I've only watched about 10 haha
The bed sheet looks the best out of all of them.
I like your post and ideas!
💯❤❤❤💥💥 You two ROCK!!!!
Hey Marcus,, have you also considered a translucent inner shower liner?
Dang! I have been working on diffused lighting for the last 2 weeks now! It's like we're both on the same wavelength or something. By the way huge fan from the beginning brother!
Markus ~ Great! We needed something like this and it will be easier than anything else!
Hi Markus! It would awesome to see you shoot a roll of b&w film for portraits. Film cameras are super cheap.
Very nice video and practical ideas, I like improvisation.
~Alexa Shaw
That's a good idea too!

Very cool Markus! So next step is rear projecting images as a backdrop... now I’d love to see your take on that subject ;)
We used a front projection system on my movie in '94 using a beam spliter, it was quite cool
It would be easy to sew some pvc pipe pass thru's and it would be like the first two for about 15-20.00's thanks for the idea!!
A PVC frame doesn't collapse easily, the Lastolite 6.6 x 6.6ft frame sets up and breaks down real fast to 3 ft and its only 135 bucks www.manfrotto.com/us-en/skylite-rapid-frame-midi-1-5-x-1-5m-ll-lr815/?gclid=CjwKCAjwydP5BRBREiwA-qrCGs9QJZnW2u--XQqSfwwi8DSoOkCsMU6iKzMM_UQa6zRLZFF17Z-11xoCqhgQAvD_BwE
@@MarkusPix thanks I'll check it out! I thought the sheet did a great job. , Just so you Know I bought a Sony a6100 because of your reviews!
