    You’ve got my four year old all excited for fall tomato planting now! He said “Mama!!! We could do that!!!!” I said “Augie, we don’t have canning stuff.” “But Mama but Mama… we can add a canner and supplies to my birthday wish list!!!” (His birthday is in August and he has chosen a “gardening party” for the theme much to his Mama’s delight)
    Any chance the other parents will find it odd if I put a canner and lids on his Amazon or Target wish list?? 🤣🥰

    Hey Mama Hoss, those maters sure look good! Wish mine were ready to pick. Did you know that aluminum can leach into food when cooking in aluminum? Especially acidic foods like maters. You may pick up a 24 qt heavy bottom stainless stockpot from Sam's for 50 bucks. I also picked up a stainless canner rack for about 20 bucks online which fits the pot nicely so it can double as a canner too! Hope this helps.

    Can’t wait until my tomatoes are ready to can after watching!! I only have a few left from last year. Question why do the hot water bath? I noticed you did that on both your tomato and salsa videos. I have canned myself for 25 years and never hot water bathed my jars. My Mom did the same. I do the exact same others steps, except I tighten the lid a little harder and then cover with a blanket or towel to slowly cool over the next 12 hours. Knock on wood, but haven’t had one jar not seal in 10 plus years. Try a jar that way next time. Saves a lot of time. Love the videos.

    Those tomatoes sure look good and there's nothing like homemade spaghetti sauce from fresh tomatoes! Any suggestions for keeping birds from pecking at your tomatoes? The Dalen owl didn't scare the grackles away. The Hossinator 2255 only produced a couple of nice sized tomatoes on the bottom of the plant and only a couple higher up but those are taking forever to grow bigger and haven't ripened. It might be do to the desert heatwave were having out here in AZ. My plants are in a 4x8 raised bed and under 40% shade cloth. I have some Bella Rosa and Red Snapper from Hoss and am going to I'm going to transplant seedlings in July when the the monsoon will be here, and the afternoon and nighttime temperatures will be cooler, so hopefully they'll set more fruit. Any tips would be appreciated.

    I thought one of the canning rules was not to "stage" the jars. But to fill one jar at a time and put it in the canner then fill the next jar etc. I thought this was to keep the jars and contents hot to prevent jar cracking/bursting since they are going in a hot canner/water. I have only canned for 2 seasons. I am learning everyone does things different. I guess more research needed on my part.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  2 года назад +2

      you will find many different ways of doing it. I keep mine in the oven and take all them out right before I fill and work fast. I have never had any issue with jar cracking/bursting. Been doing this for over 30 years.
