I mind that day so well, a beautiful hot sunny Thursday, in the middle of the Hunger Strikers deaths, me and my friends were walking up to Barr’s shop to get ice pops, we saw the Brown escort type car stop right beside us at Cromore, 4 lads with Balaclavas on top of their heads, not pulled down, the car pulled away, and we said “there’s The Boys going on a Job”. We got our ice pops at the Creggan Shops and stood at the railings, all of a sudden a car came speeding and screeched he’d to a halt, and one guy jumped out with a balaclava on trying desperately to get help. We were in shock as wee saw 2 lifeless volunteers and one injured in the car every body came on the scene to help. An ambulance came and there was someone saying to take him to Letterkenny, that man was injured. The News report stated that there was 1 off duty officer involved in the incident and returned fire, but my young brother and his Cousin saw it all happening right in front of them, they were surrounded by plain clothes soldier’s firing bullets at the car, it was a miracle they got away. But the SAS would not follow, they knew better.

If you take away the narrative and listen to the human aspect of this. Family friends and pics of kids. Almost the same as mine. I was in the RUC and in Strand Road that day. Hugh Brady and Peggy Mc Court I knew from stopping them. Hugh never gave any cheek as he knew the score. I survived a lot myself whilst in Derry, glad to get back to my baby daughters after each shift.
I genuinely felt for Hugh Brady in this video and that’s the truth.
Hugh Brady did put the guys back into the escort car, back to central drive. He reappeared at the city cemetery and opened up with an m16 at our peelers at the scene.
I believe that changed him that day. I’ve never spoke so politely about an “enemy”. before. George and Pop were proficient “operators “ but knew the score of the Big Boys Rules of engagement.
The funny wee stories and old pics of our kids could like I said be mine. Bad times for us all. I hope they never ever return. For the sake of our children and grandchildren. I will take any abuse offered.

Thanks for your comment. Yes it was a long time ago and I too hope that militant conflict doesnt return to our streets. I would love to hear more about that day from your personal perspective. Its not something we ever get to hear about.

Nice to hear the evenly balanced comments of a former RUC member who - like the rest of us - was glad to have survived those dark days. Hopefully these kind of very worthwhile accounts will start to trickle out now that so much time has passed.
Us old fellas do love to reminisce........
