  • Gypsy Jazz style guitars are known for their crunchy, nasally, and barking tone, great for chunking out rhythms and laying down blistering two-finger leads. Honoring the traditional builders while adding Eastman’s hand craftsmanship the DM series are sure to perk the ears of any Gypsy player. This Eastman DM2/V Gypsy Jazz is an inspiring instrument that, when picked up, will bring out a whole new player that you never knew was inside you!
Here's Jesse bringing the Jazz to this Eastman. Enjoy!

I got one at my local dealer back in July and it's been a very interesting experience hearing it open up. At first it was really only resonant in the top and mids, but now the low end has started to fill out. It is my first and only ladder-braced guitar. It's not 'made' for bluegrass but actually, it cuts as good as some of the banjo killers I own. There's just not a ton of low end for the player. I also have a Loar LH-700-VS and a Santa Cruz 00-42 and they hit in a similar way. Very mid-forward, SUPER projecting and penetrating, but great balance across the fingerboard. Just not a lot of bass, which is to be expected. A pickup essentially solves all that. I typically play on a mic but these kinds of guitars can sound and respond huge with a pickup.

Twice as many functional digits and you can maybe play half as well as DR...

Does the DM-2 come with a slight relic? I saw one that was.

They come new but the finish is very light and soft so they wear fast but it’s good honest weather and the guitar is very lively because the wood can properly resonate because it’s not being choked out by polyurethane

I think you play pretty well. Wonder about the laminate back and sides though. Done for tone, cost savings or just to prevent cracking?

That’s how the original Selmer/ Maccaferri guitars were made- the back and sides were of a 3-ply laminate with the innermost being mahogany. I played one in Paris today- it was in a small luthier shop in the first arrondissement. According to the luthier whom I met, it was revolutionary for its time and done for strength and projection, not cost savings. That guitar was being offered for 28,000 Euros.

What would be the difference in sound between this one and the DM1? Because I can't imagine a different neck making it a wholly different instrument!
