Just tried full cav russia. You get aristocratic, loyal cossacks and give the boyars the cav privilege from tier 5 reform. All these combined give you 95% cav inf ratio, 50% cav combat ability and 50% cav cost. I killed the hordes only to eventually become one myself. Next playthrough ill try forming russia as a horde in order to grab horde national ideas and horde ideas
@@CoolBonobo I was thinking of something like that too. I wonder if it is worth doing any other formation during that process as well for more modifiers.
Instead of using horde national ideas, start as Kazan because they get maneuver, cavalry flanking and combat ability, and they have better tolerance of heathens so it's less painful to swap religions. Just my personal choice, Kazan has gold at the start which I prefer.
Would you play Novgorod-to-Russia Great Veche Republic some day in the future? Not soon obviously, since you already have fresh Russia run. Would be nice to see tall'ish Russia games, as much as one can apply "tall" to Russia anyway. I've seen some EU4 contentmakers starting those, but never going any further than first wars against their big neihbours, it would be refreshing to see numbers of trade-oriented Novgorod conquering Northeastern Europe et al going green and upwards.
The reason to play tall is not to look at the numbers go up, but to conquer the entire map from a small state. Also, there was a video exploring Novgorod creating Russia and then moving its capital into Brazil so it would "brazilian frontier" all the way through Americas.

Well, Ivan IV was kinda terrible during the last years of his reign. I am actually surprised that Oprichnina in EU4 is portrayed as something good, cause it literally was a wave of terror mainly against boyars.
He had some reasons for paranoia, boyars aristocrats poisoned his first wife and mother. In time when boyars regensy he experienced a terrible attitude from them. And during his illness bin 1553 they tried to disinherit his truborn son and put on the throne his first cousin prince Andrei Staritskiy. During his reign were killed from 5000 to 20000 people, it's less than was killed in St. Bartholomew s day massacre in France. So Ivan was no more terrible than all rulers of his time. P. S. Are you going defense ideas as Russia? Russia, just like in real life, sucks to invade. Let the great powers run around in your territories loosing all their manpower before you counter attack. Defense-religous as your first two ideas allows a policy for more attrition too. The Siberian trade chain is one of the most isolated, and therefore powerful trade chains in the game. If you're dieing in the early game, like before 1500 you need to hang on to your vassals for longer and possibly get new ones to help with wars. Quantity is the worst military idea group for Russia, you already have the most manpower in the game you just need troop quality so you don't melt to other nations (Sweden, Prussia, Poland, Ottomans) who actually have troop quality bonuses built in
AI declares on you if it thinks that it can easily win against you, so always upgrade mil tech and find as many allies as possible. They still would be able to declare if your allies won't join in, but the chance is much much lower. As for economy, Muscovy early game economy is always like that. Your only remedies are stealing money in wars and developing gold mine in Kazan. In the mid-late game, you'll get a lot from trade, pay out your loans (you may do it like me, by stealing money from Ottomans/Poland/Denmark), build manufactories and workshops and you'll have more money than you'll ever need.
