Well, the league is forcing them to play 65 to get All Nba nods that influence the contracts. So yeah, the League is forcing the players@@Onechance_ngl
On the 65 game thing: the solution is to stop tying contracts to awards. You really shouldn't be eligible for winning something while missing 25% of the season. But player salaries should not be tied to individual accolades that are voted on by media/coaches.
I always thought requiring a player to hit a bunch of awards before a team can offer the max is dumb af. If the team wants to give a mid player the maximum salary then let them!
Just found this channel, just want to say you are unexpectedly well spoken for someone in the basketball space. Maybe i'm just so used to sports talking heads, but your opinions are well worded and thought out and I appreciate it as a listener
People always pull the millaionares not wanting to play but never the billionaries not wanting to pay, like if YOUR team stinks you are still gaurnteed a spot in the NBA , chunks of the revenue and even if you get kicked out and have to forcefully sell the team you'll get a cool few billion.
One thing about the 65 game rule also is that it benefits the fans Imagine saving up to go to a game just to see the best players in the league, and they sit out despite being fully healthy, or because the player doesn’t take care of themselves off the court If you sign a max extension, not a supermax but a max extension and you choose not to play what are you getting that money for? Playoffs or no playoffs, that’s still your job It’s like the difference between missing work because you cannot perform your job and choosing not to do so, even if you do a minutes restriction that’s still showing up in some sense And one last point I wanna make, nobody was winning MVP playing 50-60 games unless it was a lockout and that was the max number of games, it’s been over 50 years since somebody won it with that number of games, and that was the outlier When you get injured because you didn’t condition properly that’s on you because you’ve got the bread, the equipment and the personnel there specifically to help you
He was a shoe in for the award. Jokic has been great but he’s taking it kind of coasting. Doesn’t mean Embiid better than Jokic he’s just having a better overall regular season.
@@joelman1989 Jokic has still been better IMO. And apart from that, Embiid had missed way too many games even before the injury. MVP = Most VALUABLE Player and a player provides *zero* value every time they miss a game.
My only real issue with the 65 game rule is it’s a hard cutoff when I think it should be a sliding scale. Someone playing 66 games winning an award over someone playing 64 games would be BS, but I strongly agree with the availability impacting your value. Embiid on a per game basis is way more valuable than Bam Adebayo, but if you tell me I can have embiid for 45 games or bam for 75, well, I think I might prefer bam.
@@stefankilleyajones3018 for sure, but even then let’s say 61 games so just under the appeal compared to 66. Which probably will happen on occasion, giannis was 2 games off of no award and not being able to appeal last year and still got first team honors
I get that no matter what, losing out on money sucks for these players, especially if these players are clearly good enough to warrant a supermax, but the argument at 5:00 isn't actually the whole story. The argument that an otherwise healthy player can be ineligible for the supermax because, in their contract year, they got hurt is wrong, the guideline is, "Additional supermax eligibility conditions require that the player must have been named (i) to the All-NBA first, second, or third team, (ii) Defensive Player of the Year in the preceding season or in two seasons during the preceding three seasons, or (iii) NBA MVP during the three preceding seasons." This means that a player can have 2 good seasons and then have an unlucky injury in the final season and still be eligible. Add onto this that there is an appeal process when players play very close to but less than, the 65-game threshold, and this is nothing if not reasonable. If a player does not get a supermax because they were injured for 2 out of 3 seasons then is that really unfair?
There has beeen an unwritten rule that you must play 65 game for mvp only 2 players in post merger nba (since 1977) have won mvp playing less than 65 games bill Walton and Giannis . Lebron and pedo Malone have also played less than 65 before but those were shortened lockout seasons 50 playable games in ‘99 and 66 in 2012.
There is practically a 0% chance that 82 games is the optimal number of games that has been calculated by experts, since it is the amount of games that was chosen all the way back in 1967 and has never changed with any of the changes in technology, international interest and accessibility. The odds of them choosing a perfect unchanging number of games is effectively 0.
@@Red_Ryan_Red The 65 game rule is more beneficial to the fans overall. Either someone will have to fight through the whole season to maintain their awards or choose to pick postseason success. If a player pulls off both of these it's even more impressive now.

Not Kawhi ducking the smoke 💨 😂. He’s at 47 games played in the first half of the season all I heard for the past 3 years was boy couldn’t go fr. I’d love to think he truly was injured but now it’s looking more like a “he was hurt” ( as in 85%) but didn’t wanna risk it. I’m just saying i need to see more appreciation/smoke for Kawhi playing more.
ME TOO!!! And not just this "he's finally healthy" cop-out!! Coincidences happen.... but then I look at AD playing regularly too... and saying "I started taking care of my body" after ALMOST A DECADE in the league!!!
I think Covid did more harm to the league than the fans realized or cared to remember from the games becoming more compressed, the shortened off seasons, the covid restrictions, and long COVID symptoms. Also the playoff structure change with the playoffs means more teams are playing harder for longer to get in so there’s less off nights in the league where a game would be easier and the playoffs to win a championship you need 16 wins there’s no team just running through the league last playoffs three teams played in over 18 playoff games
Embiid has to stop flopping is all. His goofy movements to draw fouls make his landings awkward which take a toll on your legs, especially for a 7 footer. Klay used to spread out his legs to draw fouls on 3s, messing up his form. he ended up getting hurt for the doing that later in the season.
I still don't understand fans being mad at this rule. You can turn on a game and actually see stars play. People complained about the regular season not mattering and now the NBA is trying to change that with the in season tournament and actually making players play games. Just enjoy basketball fr
Even without the rule, depending on if/when he came back, he wouldn’t have won it anyways. Nobody is winning MVP being out from before all-star break through the rest of the season.
Thing with embiid getting injured is; thats his biggest weakness. For the most part, even his playoff drops are caused due to his health. If we are evaluating the most valuable player, you should factor in if they can stay healthy for 65 games. I do thing the 65 games thing WILL become an issue in the future but i dont think embiid is the case for it.
I never understood why the 65 game rule was an issue to begin with. These guys get paid millions to shoot a basketball not sit on the bench for 20+ games. No other profession can you just not show up to work or you do show up and do nothing. You’d be fired immediately
Players would never agree to less than 82 games their salary depends on 82 games. If the reg season is reduced by 20% then their entire salary is reduced by 20% Players making $50m would be making $40m if games are reduced from 82 to 65
This is completely made up wtf. Player salaries are dependent on league revenue. It is possible that when they renegotiate for less games the tv deals will be adjusted but it is not as simple as less games equals less salary
Its crazy to me that people still have this discussion without thinking about the medical staffs and sport science doctors that influence players "resting" or "sitting out" to avoid injury. I'm not saying that it's solely the medical staff or the players making decisions everytime, but nuance is never in this discussion. It's always the player’s fault or the medical staff's fault. At this point, idk who tf to believe.
About the perspective of the players: the players (or better players union) agreed to the rule. If they hadn't agreed to it, it would've been adjusted. Even without arguing about if the rule is good or not, you cannot argue that a rule is unfair if you literally voted for it (or at least said that it's ok).
I understand Joel was having a historic season but he gonna be out for the rest of the regular season and he only played 34 games he wouldn't deserve MVP anyways and 34 games isn't enough to have an all nba appearance either
the thing is even if there wasn't the 65 game limit nobody would be making the case for Embiid winning the MVP missing this many games anyway, no MVP has ever played less than 65 games it was always the case now it's just a written rule.
SO SICK AND TIRED OF THE PHRASE "when healthy"!!! It's like living in a fantasy land of "perfect scenarios". Meanwhile, IN REALITY, many good players are ignored despite being perfectly healthy... Games aren't won by "best roster" or "Vegas odds". They're won by your guys beating my guys - whoever was available/qualfied on THAT day!! Not last week, not 3 weeks from now and certainly not "when healthy", but on that particular day!! So let's talk about the healthy players. And not the imaginary versions of players in.

5:00-5:30 that’s tough I feel like people forget that basketball is their JOB. At a job you must show up for said work. They shouldn’t get special privileges. If anything making millions of dollars is that privilege. There are people who don’t get paid even close to a percentage of the revenue they generate for their company nd they get zero room to complain about their work schedule. The 82 game season is their work schedule
Craziest thing is you’re allowed to play less than the 65 games and still win awards. Kenny and Pierre talked about this, the rule was made to stop load management not punish players who are truly injured. The league has the ability to rescind the rule. The league ain’t going to let an Andrew Wiggins type of player make all NBA over KD if KD played 60 games while wiggins played 82. Now ofc u can’t play 30-50 games and expect an award but there is a grace area
They earn over 20 million dollars just to be pretty on the bench? If they can't play anymore why don't they retire? Oh right, because load management exists and they like money. Rule for 65 games was really needed, now we need some harsh flopping rule too!
hey solz love your content and your continued growth. I am looking to get a quality camera for my upcoming video ideas bc right now I am just using my phone. Which cameras would you recommend if you don't mind me asking?
Jayson Tatum is better than Joel Embiid. Sure Embiid has better regular szn stats but his team is built for him to have these crazy performances. Tatum saves his for the playoffs
@@edgardoMurnia I wasn't necessarily talking about tv ratings although it does apply for watching games on tv as well (to a lesser degree). The only people that have an issue with the 82 game schedule are the fans, not because it's 2 much by default but if there is a 1/3 or 1/4 chance your favorite player(s) doesn't play. But as long as the fans keep watching the games with mediocre line ups and keep buying tickets for 'insane prices' the league has no issue keeping the schedule at 82
With less games, you'd get healthier players and more exciting level of competition. With more games, you get cheaper tickets and more opportunities to sell your product. There's huge payoffs for both sides. At the end of the day, I hate seeing players get hurt. Especially someone like Embiid.
I wouldnt say that availability is the best ability. For me its definetly consitency, wich also factors durability, like i want a dude that can score literally every night 20 with no effort put in and involves his teammates than someone that scores 40 one night and 10 the other.
MVP and DPOY should be the only rewards you have to play a minimum of 65 games for the others I wouldn’t be mad if they made it you had to play only 50 games or something
I'd take Tatum, he's basically an iron man and can do a good enough percentage of what Embiid can do. Plus I think it's easier to build around a Tatum than an Embiid (probably not by much but still)
The outrage of this video has spawned ONLY because people didn’t watch the video and judged it by its cover. In actuality, nothing negative was said about the big fella. While it is a tough pill to swallow for some Philly fans, Joel’s not winning any season awards after missing as many games as he has. All I can hope for as an Embiid fan, is that he is okay in time for the playoffs to beat the fraud allegations.
HOW CAN YOU DISAGREE WITH: "Availability is the best ability"?!?!? DEAD PEOPLE *CANNOT* PLAY!! I'm better than Wilt Chamberlain at basketball... BECAUSE I'M STILL ALIVE!! Michael Jordan - "greatest of all time" to many - has been retired for 20yrs!! So he's as useful to the Chicago Bulls as I am (though far more likely to get a 10-day contract) IF YOU CAN'T PLAY, YOU'RE USELESS!! Kawhi might be a good team mate/cheerleader/coach/extra set of eyes on the game... but if he's not playing, his actual basketball talents are of no use to anyone anywhere!! They PLAY the games. They're not awarded wins because "roster".

There is a reason the league is 82 games long, these players want to be paid for the total *possible* amount of games while only actually playing 40-50% of it (sometimes 0%). There is no argument to be made, this rule is good for everyone but the greedy divas

@edgardoMurnia "state playing me than ever..." What?!? On average, players are playing less minutes and less games per year. The active day roster is 15 as opposed to 12 which was the norm until about 2012 (I may be wrong in that year). It makes no sense that players can't play 82 games or even 80% of them. I get injuries happen but missing games for rest? C'mon. Your guaranteed your money at least show up or let someone else play and earn the bag.

The question here is if the rule "forced" him to try to play to get "to 65" and ended up with a huge injurty to a top player in the League.
@@edgardoMurniaThat’s his fault. He’s obsessed with those awards because he knows he can’t make it through an entire post season. No one is forcing these players to do anything. Did he feel pressured? Sure.
It's to protect dumbass GMs from themselves
Player BONUSES!!

One thing about the 65 game rule also is that it benefits the fans
Imagine saving up to go to a game just to see the best players in the league, and they sit out despite being fully healthy, or because the player doesn’t take care of themselves off the court
If you sign a max extension, not a supermax but a max extension and you choose not to play what are you getting that money for? Playoffs or no playoffs, that’s still your job
It’s like the difference between missing work because you cannot perform your job and choosing not to do so, even if you do a minutes restriction that’s still showing up in some sense
And one last point I wanna make, nobody was winning MVP playing 50-60 games unless it was a lockout and that was the max number of games, it’s been over 50 years since somebody won it with that number of games, and that was the outlier
When you get injured because you didn’t condition properly that’s on you because you’ve got the bread, the equipment and the personnel there specifically to help you

Embiid wasn’t the MVP before the injury anyways. It’s Jokic.
@@DynamicUnreal I agree with your second point which is why I also agree with the 65 game minimum.
Joel was literally the mvp favorite the entire season
@@Tellytooshoes It’s called a narrative.
In hindsight now, it’s wild to prematurely crown an MVP 34 games into the season when that’s all that player is going to play at the 70 game mark.
Teams can appeal if someone plays under 65 games because they were injured and not just resting
The argument that an otherwise healthy player can be ineligible for the supermax because, in their contract year, they got hurt is wrong, the guideline is,
"Additional supermax eligibility conditions require that the player must have been named (i) to the All-NBA first, second, or third team, (ii) Defensive Player of the Year in the preceding season or in two seasons during the preceding three seasons, or (iii) NBA MVP during the three preceding seasons."
This means that a player can have 2 good seasons and then have an unlucky injury in the final season and still be eligible. Add onto this that there is an appeal process when players play very close to but less than, the 65-game threshold, and this is nothing if not reasonable. If a player does not get a supermax because they were injured for 2 out of 3 seasons then is that really unfair?
“Is never this black and white” shows Kobe and Nash. I was hoping for bsolz to notice cause that probably would be funny af😂
There has beeen an unwritten rule that you must play 65 game for mvp only 2 players in post merger nba (since 1977) have won mvp playing less than 65 games bill Walton and Giannis .
I agree. I think it’s more of a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” type of thing. Them even changing it to 80 games will significantly lose them money
Fewer games would make individual games seem more important to the casual fan.
@@Red_Ryan_Red The 65 game rule is more beneficial to the fans overall. Either someone will have to fight through the whole season to maintain their awards or choose to pick postseason success. If a player pulls off both of these it's even more impressive now.

What the hell are you talking about? Injuries are just as random as ever. Nothing changed.
The internet is so braindead. A trillion mfs saw the thumbnail and title of the Jxmy video and took it and ran. Didn't even watch the video

27:07 thats my golden age baby, our stars played when i was a kid! 😤😤

Players making $50m would be making $40m if games are reduced from 82 to 65

About the perspective of the players: the players (or better players union) agreed to the rule. If they hadn't agreed to it, it would've been adjusted. Even without arguing about if the rule is good or not, you cannot argue that a rule is unfair if you literally voted for it (or at least said that it's ok).
Fuck a season award bonus, I’d give Embiid his 40 million if he made it through without getting he knee blown off
JXMY is 100% correct.
I understand Joel was having a historic season but he gonna be out for the rest of the regular season and he only played 34 games he wouldn't deserve MVP anyways and 34 games isn't enough to have an all nba appearance either

Why weird? Odd word choice
I wouldnt say that availability is the best ability. For me its definetly consitency, wich also factors durability, like i want a dude that can score literally every night 20 with no effort put in and involves his teammates than someone that scores 40 one night and 10 the other.
