As a veteran of the USN, I think this rule of 65 games is really effective towards things us fans don’t see. Things the most casual fans don’t think or care about…and that’s taking care of your body off the court.
When you join the military, you sign a contract essentially stating that you are government property. You now have the added responsibility of taking care of yourself in a way that ensures you’re available to meet the mission, and that’s what we sign up for. The crazy thing is, we don’t get paid as much as athletes, but that sense of responsibility is there.
The fact that you can sign a multi million dollar contract and not even be pushed to take care of yourself is crazy. Lebron has shown what longevity can look like if you really put resources behind taking care of your body. Yes, he’s a genetic freak, but on top of that, he’s done things off the court to stay in shape that other players just won’t do, and that’s a problem.
The medical field can get more advanced, but if by that happening all the players get lazier, what’s the point. We’re supposed to be seeing an increase in availability over time, and I think it’s because players aren’t taking things serious off the court.
This rule gives them more of a reason to. They’re spoiled, to be honest. But what else is new.

that's not the point tho, i agree with the rule and that you have to take care of your body but some people's bodies just can't hold up, just like Yao Ming, it's got nth to do with work ethic. For Embid it's a damned if u do, damned if u don't thing with him, and that's what's annoying cuz dude has been injury prone ever since he stepped foot into the league and he constantly tries to play through them especially in the playoffs which fans usually would appreciate but instead people say he's dumb for it and say oh he's just doing it to look good. Fact is no matter what he does people are just gonna hate on him.

    • @nobodyflowers
      @nobodyflowers 7 месяцев назад +8

@@jonnstewart2023 And I can agree with that. I think injury prone players are the exceptions to this rule, so long as they’re doing the best they can to stay in shape. Players like Zion have literally frustrated everyone because he’s even admitted he wasn’t doing the best he could.
Anthony Davis is another interesting situation. He plays with Lebron and I thought for sure his availability would increase if he started doing Lebron Esque things off the court, but that didn’t happen. Although, this year looks amazing for him.
Aside from injury prone players, however, I’m also looking at players who simply could perform better on the court if they worked on their bodies more. It’s one thing to increase endurance by staying in shape, but there’s also simply staying in shape to give the best product on the court. The latter is something most star players don’t have to worry about because they’re amazing players, but so many could take leaps if they did more, in my opinion. Availability is still one of those things though.

Imagine saving up to go to a game just to see the best players in the league, and they sit out despite being fully healthy, or because the player doesn’t take care of themselves off the court
If you sign a max extension, not a supermax but a max extension and you choose not to play what are you getting that money for? Playoffs or no playoffs, that’s still your job
It’s like the difference between missing work because you cannot perform your job and choosing not to do so, even if you do a minutes restriction that’s still showing up in some sense
And one last point I wanna make, nobody was winning MVP playing 50-60 games unless it was a lockout and that was the max number of games, it’s been over 50 years since somebody won it with that number of games, and that was the outlier

I get that no matter what, losing out on money sucks for these players, especially if these players are clearly good enough to warrant a supermax, but the argument at 5:00 isn't actually the whole story. The argument that an otherwise healthy player can be ineligible for the supermax because, in their contract year, they got hurt is wrong, the guideline is,
"Additional supermax eligibility conditions require that the player must have been named (i) to the All-NBA first, second, or third team, (ii) Defensive Player of the Year in the preceding season or in two seasons during the preceding three seasons, or (iii) NBA MVP during the three preceding seasons."
This means that a player can have 2 good seasons and then have an unlucky injury in the final season and still be eligible. Add onto this that there is an appeal process when players play very close to but less than, the 65-game threshold, and this is nothing if not reasonable. If a player does not get a supermax because they were injured for 2 out of 3 seasons then is that really unfair?

I think Covid did more harm to the league than the fans realized or cared to remember from the games becoming more compressed, the shortened off seasons, the covid restrictions, and long COVID symptoms.
Also the playoff structure change with the playoffs means more teams are playing harder for longer to get in so there’s less off nights in the league where a game would be easier and the playoffs to win a championship you need 16 wins there’s no team just running through the league last playoffs three teams played in over 18 playoff games

Craziest thing is you’re allowed to play less than the 65 games and still win awards.
