- I've finally gotten around to answering one of the most common questions I ever get on RUclips: Just how do I make and animate those funny cardboard characters?
If you have any further questions, let me know in the comments Игры
My man just singlehandlendly teached how to turn LBP into Gmod SFMs

uhhhh i think gmod and sfm are two separate things..
The Dstomp character is proof that cardboard/other material characters are one of the most ideal character styles.
This is the ideal LBP character. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like
Cardboard cutouts are the way to go
@@ilikecheese5832 sackbots are overated... sticker friends are the way of the future.
@@soggybreadman4035 if you say stickers and decorations are overated you're just wrong
dstomp can you puppet my marriage back together
He'll Wed you to Ginfurnkle.
Anything is possible with cardboard cutouts
The way these videos are even EDITED in LittleBigPlanet is just wonderful,
You're a real caster of the cardboard good sir!
my GOODNESS this is cool!
(real unfortunate i have been barred from playing LBP online even BEFORE the sad purge of 2024, due to the updates being bigger than my PS3's FORMATTED memory, ever since LBP3...)
but when i was little and could still play, i would have LOVED to see, and learn to make something like this!!!, it is AWESOME, and very (surprisingly) easy to do,
though, in my time, nobody really figured out/did that sort of thing.
It is very good to see that LBP, although it is gutted, is still able to be used to tell fun stories and make fun things...it's still alive in our uhh...imagispere.
The walking animation is good even the custom
Honey wake up, DSTOMP has posted again
Honestly, great tutorial, loved how you were able to mix in some comedy here and there. I absolutely love your creations Dstomp. You've been one of my favorite creators on lbp recently. Keep doing what you love.
I found out using rotators with walking animation makes it look more natural. Over all pretty good tutorial. I'm glad this works on LBP2 aswell.
The most amazing LBP tutorial I’ve ever seen. I wish I could’ve watches it sooner.
Hopefully you got the “See What I Did There” pin in time
Thanks!
Considering the state of the servers, they’ll probably forget by the time a new LBP comes out.
Ah, well. Maybe I can convince one of the custom server owners to give me the pin…
Incredible. Thank you for helping keep this game alive!
very helpful tutorial, i made a GINFURNKLE style puppet out of Arlene from garfield
Media Molecule would approve.
Love the effort put into these videos
This is a great tutorial, Dstomp. It is perfectly explained and it's fun to watch.
this is how I imagine LBP1 style characters get upgraded with all the new stuff in LBP2 and LBP3
also fantastic tutorial, love your videos!
No way, now I can make cursed puppets!
I’ve witnessed these first hand, and they are very complex. You make great stuff Dstomp!
Dstomp, this is an excellent video! Not only do you convey the information in an easy to process way, but you make it fun to watch as well. i'm really glad you shared this wiv us, i know it will help me out (your technique is definitely a lot smoother than mine. i don't know why i'm so committed to variable strength batteries). Thanks again, and i hope you have a wonderful day!
thx for this tutorial, now i can make some cursed puppets
This channel is so underrated, the fact you just teached how to make better cartboard characters instead of just being stationary dolls is just amazing!
By the way have you uploaded this level to your LBP earth and if you did, have you gotten the "see what i did there?" Pin?
Thanks!
I did plan, at one point, to publish this as a cutscene level, but decided that this just works a lot better as a RUclips video, where you can skip and repeat parts you want without rewatching everything else to do so.
I did check the description of the "See What I Did There?" Pin, which does say "level or video," so this tutorial would probably still fit that requirement.
But I don't have it, and probably will never have it, considering recent events. Oh well
Going to keep this video in mind for when Restitched comes out
It’d be so awesome if this tutorial applies to Restitched!
I'm actually gonna attempt to make a level using these on LBP2. ( rpcs3 ) I mainly wanna find out some of the limitations and some of the great things you can do with these, one of the things I found out was it you hide a "ragdoll effect" character behind a default stance character you can create a gag with that ( maybe a rock getting thrown at them. ) triggering a mircochip that unhides the ragdoll but hides the default stance character then have a mircochip that flings the ragdoll. ( it's a mess I know but it works and can create some funny stuffies!! )
It’ll definitely be harder without the Physics or Opacity Tweakers, but I bet it’s still possible to put together a good puppet in LBP 2. Good luck!
I actually used that ragdoll-swap trick in my video “Return of the Fireballs,” when Dstomp starts getting pulled around. The swap is pretty much seamless and I really aught to be using it more
This is like a new age LBPlanetorial video!
It's always fascinating that the community _still_ has new and wonderful insights to share, even now.
Thank you for your work dear sir (or madame), and I hope these game stick around for a bit longer so that I can test this stuff out 😄
Amazing, now that you explained it, I'm just getting all sorts of ideas of what I could do with them! Perfect tutorial, with clear instructions, but also willing to let you experiment and give you some stuff to think about to figure out yourself, but not in a way that leaves you scratching your head, you explain what is going on behind the scenes, then you leave it at that. Good job, man, this is why I'm subscribed. I give this a rating of 9/11
Uh, wait a minute, there's no Deep Space Sonata and Twin Towers meme?
*_Dis veedio iss bad you just posted cringe you are going to lose subscriber_*
new stomp flick!
Leeetsss GOOOOO!!!
This was really cool seeing how you make these cardboard goobers move. Extremely technical!
Makes me wonder what kind of brilliant animations we'd be seeing if this puppet style of animation was popular back in lbp2.
Best tutorial I've ever seen
Both super useful and super entertaining, this is an amazing video and you should be proud of yourself for being able to put it together!
Cool tutorial I'm going to try to do this, I'm even going to save this tutorial, I really liked it
The video was very helpful, thanks for making this video!
6:29 if i say i roughly understand whats going on am i saying i'm too good with LBP logic?
It may be easy to understand, but it isn't nearly as easy to explain in a way that compliments the rest of the tutorial. Most of the extra fluff involves angling the legs before and during the step, making sure one leg can't move without the other one still in motion, and being capable of higher speeds
@@Dstomp like, its hard to explain but if you've done some weird and roughly complex logic contraptions you can *kinda* guess what does what
Thanks!
so cool
this is so good lol
So that's how they did the puppetry in LittleBigPlanet PSVita 🎉
I watched this be made so SECOND!!!
i can try this in LPB VITA?
Ok, one small problem, im new to logic and stuff, how do I activate the parts? (Like the selector)
Literally speaking, anything that gives an output will do. Things like Timers, Counters, and Batteries.
You should look into how to use Sequencers! That's what I do all the time. Using Batteries on Sequencers is the best way to get your parts to change exactly how you want, when you want them to
@@Dstomp thx Dstomp for the advice! (love the vids btw, always make me laugh)
how can i get the effect of it moving forward faster? i have the followers at max speed and excel it still seems really slow, yours almost teleport
The problem may be that the follower is being weighed down by other parts
Try using the Physics Tweaker to increase the weight of the object/body part that the follower is attached to
is ginfurnkle coming back this year in a new short
He never returns my calls. The GINFURNKLE you see here is actually just a digital recreation. Movie magic, you see.
There’s no way that two GINFURNKLEs can exist at the same time
@@Dstomp is GINFURNKLE its own asexual mitotic species?
After splitting... Does one consume the other for survival?
@@soggybreadman4035 We don’t really know what he is. Other than a self-proclaimed know-it-all who thinks he’s too good to be in my videos
How do you do these cutscenes without the black borders at the top and bottom?
In Gameplay Settings, you can set the gamemode to cooperative, versus, and cutscene. You gotta set it to anything but cutscene, otherwise the bars are forced.
When using a movie camera, turn off “disable player controller.” This removes the black bars
@@Dstomp so during all these animations, the player is just stuck in a box somewhere?
...neato.
@@soggybreadman4035 Well, not exactly. The player doesn’t even spawn in, as the checkpoint is never on-screen during the cutscene.
But! In my level “The Amazing Troubling TV,” I needed the player to spawn in before the intro starts. So the player is actually kept in a box off-screen during this sequence. If the player ever got to see this box, the words “You Smell” could be seen behind it
@@DstompThank you very much, however I am Brazilian and I don't understand English, but I will use Google translator to understand how you do it
@@Dstomp I'll be a little big planet youtuber later on, I'm getting a lot of inspiration from you, dstomp, thanks for helping me
I’m struggling with the hand puppet motion, I don’t know how to keep it upright
If your pesky puppet just won't comply with rotators or movers, you can try increasing the weight of the part the rotators/movers are connected to, either by changing the material to something heavier, or increasing its weight using a Physics Tweaker.
As example, if a puppet is on a stick, and the stick is being moved around using a motion recorder, you'd want to increase the weight of only the stick, and not the rest of the puppet
@@Dstomp thank you
Dstomp You Killed My Mother
I’d believe it
You should make a template
Hmmm, maybe I will, too
