Wow! This hit home. I have always loved to draw and create until I studied art in college and was told I had no talent. That was the end other than some sketching here and there. I started sketching again and experimenting with watercolor 9 months ago. I am almost 60 and it has become my passion. I need to learn a lot but hopefully I still have lots of years left to learn. Your video brought tears to my eyes...thank you.

Thanks for sharing. I watched a You Tube video where the artist shared every day I get up and draw a line in my sketch book and from there all kinds of ideas develop. I tried that and YEP if we can't think of anything to do draw a line and go from there. This is a way to get past any blockage. I have at times just drawn lines and it ended up being a type of zen tangle and it was like doing a warm up for my arms and brain to let the creativity flow. I no longer feel that I can't draw or have no ideas I just put a line across my sketchbook and go from there.

But then the people who saw it started hammering in the doubts, the dream-killing comments, adding their negative voices. Paired with a bit of rejections and I basically stopped drawing again. I want it back, but now their voices of doubt and saying how the art is meaningless child play and attention seeking, well, it's so loud I tense up when I want to draw. Thank you for these comforting videos. They really are blanketing over the meaner people.

I can continue to ignore it and suffer or I can allow it to expand. I no longer judge or criticize what i put on paper/canvas whether words or pictures, i recognize that this is MY journey. I'm learning to listen for the next prompt and the next after that. I dont know where it's leading me but I'm learning to love the adventure. ❤

I'm 71. I wanted to go to art school after hi8gh school, but I was told by family that I wasn't good enough. So, after my kids were grown, and into my 60s I started painting and drawing. I've sold quite a few now and just ordered my first actual gallery wrapped canvases. I'm excited to get started. I had no encouragement growing up or from a significant other, but here I am and I've been at it about 10 years now or so. I am improving and learn something new every time. Yesterday I drew 6 dogs and I plan to paint them. I like things that aren't necessarily perfect in shape and form, so this should be good. I would love to join your sketchbook courses, but frankly can't afford it on a fixed income, so I watch a lot of RUclips videos from lots of different artists. I find your talks most inspiring. I'm thinking Guache (spelled wrong I'm sure). I think I have spelled it like goulash. LOL Keep inspiring. I need that extra push and info.

And so I want to say THANK. YOU for following your heart, and sharing what your higher self knows with the rest of us. I started learning about art, making art, *avoiding* making art, in January 2020 and the pandemic gifted me with more time than I'd ever had. It *truly* changed the way I see the world, like prior to that I had blinders, a veil, and cataracts all obscuring the view to what now feels like an endless, sacred paradise to behold. If I had a superpower, it'd be to help others see what I now see. Anyway, thank you again.

I have been struggling with my skills in creating something. I have always wanted to be a painter since childhood. I am self-taught, but I am also my own critic. I have been watching a lot of videos about tutorials, and I always think to myself, “ohh that’s too easy!” But when it’s time for me to recreate what I have watched and learned, I pause for a very long time and think, “I really can’t do that,” and then I pack up everything. My inner self wanted me to just go and do it, face my fears in front of my art materials, but my mind is always playing tricks on me. I don’t have much art materials, but I am totally fine with what I have as I can’t really afford those expensive art materials. Anyway, sorry for ranting, hahaha! I just find this short video really hit my core. Thank you so much for your message and for creating beautiful art. Stay safe everyone!

    • @maxineboxer9714

The beauty of this is that sketchbooks and pencils are so very cheap. You can paint, and you don’t need too much. For acrylic I just use fairly cheap poster paints. Just start by doing imaginary flowers, it’s the easiest and there’s no wrong or right, it’s whatever pleases you, who’s to say otherwise. Or just do colours and shapes that look nice together. No pressure. Tutorials can make it look easy, but that’s because they’re very experienced. Then you can move on to something else, if you want to. Watercolours are my favourite, but harder. Don’t get discouraged, you can do it! A lot of art is just practice. I read that the most important thing you can bring to your art, is yourself. So true!

I love your videos Danny. I can’t seem to overcome that inner critic voice. It’s crippling. And even more infuriating because the few times I do overcome it what I draw is not that bad but there’s something really powerful in my brain that tells me I’m wrong, I’m no good at it. There’s far more talented people out there so what’s the point of me trying. It’s a horrible voice to be honest and really infuriating but I can’t seem to be quashing it (!) is it just a matter of keep pushing through this mental pain till you begin to believe it and the voice gets quieter and quieter?

I just watched your other video “how to fill 100 sketchbooks” and found the answer. Thank you so much for your videos.
