I had a chance to open for the Beach Boys in Knoxville in '66 and Dennis was having a bad night...the sound system sucked and his microphone kept turning away from him, frustrating him to the point of saying "f it" and walking off stage. His manager talked him into going back and it he put everything into it. Miss and bless the man for his contributions to our lives through his music.
I was at one of the 50th reunion concerts and enjoyed it. What I noticed, however, is that the band didn't even cover one of Dennis' songs. Fortunately his music will live on well beyond any of us who were there at its creation. He caught something that even Brian did not, and could not. Thank you to Dennis and to all who helped him.
I was born the year they hit big. Am just discovering their music that wasn't played on the radio. Amazing catalog, these guys were all complex people and profoundly deep artists.
It depends on where you were. I was in Pittsburgh for the 50th, they did both "Forever" and "God Only Knows" letting Carl and Dennis sing them (from live performances) heart wrenching.
I love this song!!!! Wish you lived longer Dennis. I was just one of those kids there to see you at a State fair. I wish I had known your true feelings, pains, sorrows, and joys just waiting to be released. Wish they had gotten their chance to do so. RIP
In the early 70's Dennis got punched in the throat. His throat/vocal chords never healed correctly - this is why his voice became the way it is in latter songs. That combined with excessive drinking didn't help of course. With all that aside....Dennis was a genius. Pure soul.
DW and I were like brothers for over 20 years....you are right about the excessive drinking but never heard about him getting punched in the throat, that's a new one. Thanks for the kind words about DW and the fact that he was a genius, and one of the kindest, sweetest persons I ever know. Few say that side of him and that is tragic. He was the first BB to do a 'solo' album....and was proud of POB and Bamboo. I miss him every day. But I know from almost the very beginning, and we go back to 1963, that he would never die of 'old age.' He lived on the edge and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was "Mr. Cool," the Steve McQueen" of the group. (PS this is not Taylor, this is her Dad, She must have been on the PC last:)
@@yourgirltaylor Hi Taylor's dad. That story is not a new one. I remember hearing in the late 70s that it was either Steve or Stan Love or Rocky Pamplin who punched Dennis in the throat. The drinking and the constant coke, plus smoking like chimneys (both Dennis and Brian) surely did a huge number as well. Thanks for sharing your story as well.
@@kylev938 If you are just finding this stuff your in for a great ride, just take it an album at a time and soak it up there are so many versions of the Beach Boys.
Yes . Musicians and comedians usually do their best work when they are down and out or at least come from a troubled or tough background . I've always found this fascinating . Pathos and Blues .
Well.. not quite. Brian has always been the chief spirit. Sure he became more blue after his brothers passed. His work kept in the spirit of what they were, became better even.
Brian is amazing he continues to do his own thing and move forward. Looking forward to viewing Long Promised Road. Guys aren't supposed to cry. That's what they say. But, Dennis KILLS me on this song. Always has. Sounds like an aging rocker at the end of the trail, reminiscing...
I'm not even a Beach Boys fan but I stumbled over Dennis a few years ago and wow what a talented guy. I like how he brings an anxiety, and edginess and darkness to his songs that stands in such contrast to what we all think of classic Beach Boys stuff. I could swear there used to be a different version of this classic here on youtube with a concert shot still of Dennis and Carl, but it looks like it's gone. Sadly. Anyone know the version?
I read in the liner notes to a Beach Boys CD I have, that if we could Angels sing, they would sound like Carl Wilson. I'd add, they would sound like the harmonies in this song.
Dennis Wilson had as much sex appeal as any man who's ever lived, in large part because that appeal was 100% natural and unpretentious. Can you imagine all the 'tang he must have snagged in his short life? What a stud!
This man was so talented could have gone to make more great albums probably even some great duets hope they make a movie about his life one day i think Bradley Cooper could fit the part of Dennis Wilson
One of the best off the LA Light album (both we're Dennis') funky kinda Randy Newman middle eighth and strange horn bursts make this an odd tune and that's what I dig about it--
Bambu is being released with Pacific Ocean Blue -- in June. It's a double CD set. Also "Baby Blue" is on the Beach Boys' Light Album (L.A.). I recently bought it as a single.
An incredible Denny/Carl song fron the 1979 ' LA Light' LP. Carl's voice is so tender and is in such contrast to Denny's, which is equally as emotive. GREAT !!!!!!!!!!! John Hunter Phillips "If We Ever Need A super Man"
Also Chritie McVie sings background vocals. She starts this track off after whistle. Her painted portrait is on the LA Light album (Baby Blue). Great song!!
I know that Carl sang the first part of this on the released (Light Album)version, but I'm fairly sure that this is Dennis all the way, with Brian on fade out harmonies at the end. Great version - thanks for posting.
Which concert would that have been? It has been a standard feature of each concert in this series for the band to play live God Only Knows with Carl singing it on video, and Forever with Dennis singing it on video. It's a HUGH fan favorite, so I doubt they did any concerts without it.
Dennis sang barritone with Mike. Look up In My Room here on RUclips, there is a version with the boys singing live to an instrumental background. You can clearly hear Dennis' voice. Also, he sang in studio but not live. If anyone questions wether or not his voice belonged, check out Do You Wanna Dance. He sang lead. Unfortunately by the time he recorded Baby Blue he'd damaged his voice which gives it that smokey Joe Cocker sound.
all we can say to much to young to soon he was the youngest beach boy from the beach boys dennis wilson farewell he plyes the piano and the drums also sung in a back up vocals R.I.P dennis wilson you ..ROCK IN PEACE( R.I.P).
Carl was the youngest Beach Boy, not Dennis. Carl was born in 1946, Dennis in 1944. Actually, David Marks (b. 1948) was the youngest Beach Boy, but he was only in the group in 1962-1963.
yeah the progressive era (67-73) is definitely very underrated and i agree they should have incoporated those songs more into the live sets. Blame Capitol for releasing Endless Summer, I think the band felt obligated to appease the crowd with the oldies rather than serenade them with those late 60s early 70s gems
Baby Blue's on Bamboo, so you'll probably only find it as a bootleg.... But Pacific Ocean Blue is getting re-issued in the next couple of months and well worth getting. Have a listen to 'Thoughts of You,' probably one of the most poignant songs I know.
@jakethesnake10000: To answer your question VDP and BW have a huge history of collaboration. . .I was not making a comparison between Smile and Orange Crate . . .that would be ludicrous, as they are two completely separate musical visions. That doesn't mean that I don't like OCA, but it's no SMILE
" . . . still have what's left of Brian"? What does that mean exactly? He wouldn't be where he is today without the life experiences he had over the years, both good and bad, we would probably never had seen a release like "Smile" . . . which is probably one of Brian's greatest personal works ever other than the stuff he did with Van Dyke Parks. . .
This is the kind of song that makes me think that all people from all cultures could cure what ills their souls, if they ever bothered to open their minds, and let the healing begin.
@brienb1770 the 2004 release was great but for the most part it was constructed by people who were not brian wilson. eugene landy successfully extinguished brian's spark in the 80's and i think it's a testament to the man that he is still able to write better pop music than the majority of people peddling it today. and did you just compare Smile to Orange Crate Art? if so, that's hilarious
To me this is an amazing sketch, but just a tad unfinished - if just the right collaborator this song could have been amazing - it's really cool as is, but just not quite there to my ear.
