Honestly I think emo jazz is a cooler name that math rock but math rock is cooler, better, and just overall fantastic genre of music. Think of jazz which is already one of the best genres in my opinion, and just make it better in everyway. Math rock is just jazz that is nothing like jazz if that makes sense.

I personally use synyster gates guitar school to practice guitar theory because it's free and the lessons are short but can really show some technique along with basic theory, for me it was a good starting point. Time and discipline are the most important when it comes to playing well so even if it's just 10 mins a day pick up your guitar and practice.

Different things are in focus in different genres. In jazz, it's mostly the melodies/harmonies; in mathrock, maybe the changing rhythms; in rap, its the lyrics etc. Of course there are other things at play as well. I just think that, in many cases, comparing genres is problematic cause they all have a different purpose. That being said, jazz as a genre is way more fundamental.

i love math rock but i have to agree. it blew my mind when i first discovered it but now i just have a select few artists i consistently listen to and finding something new from the genre that i genuinely enjoy is so hard. feels like every new song i find is just incoherent, unmemorable noodling and i’m getting bored of it

I don't really listen to math rock specifically, but I'd think the "meat" in the genre are the different rhythms. In jazz, it's all about the melodies and harmonies, and there's usually less variation on the rhythmical side.
All metal songs can sound alike for someone who doesn't listen to anything related to it.
All coffee brands can taste the same for tea drinkers.
You need experience to find all the intricacies and fine details in things.

though my understanding of math rock might be completely flawed atm, but the point was that they have different function.
