Honestly I think emo jazz is a cooler name that math rock but math rock is cooler, better, and just overall fantastic genre of music. Think of jazz which is already one of the best genres in my opinion, and just make it better in everyway. Math rock is just jazz that is nothing like jazz if that makes sense.

@@jojodajester2419 i feel you, I'm 23 almost 24 quit my IT job 2-3 years ago and am about to flip my life over studying music but I don't know where to start either, and I'm from Italy too, trying to get the hang of it during these days checking schools' websites and contacting professional musicians before september so I can start this year and do something about it!
@@jojodajester2419 you can practice guitar with any job that takes any amount of time because you just need to play a bit of it everyday or so and you're fine, but for music theory I can't help unfortunately as I am in the same situation..

He is very knowledgeable on music theory and can bring some concepts in to light so that you know what to look for when trying to study theory. I personally use synyster gates guitar school to practice guitar theory because it's free and the lessons are short but can really show some technique along with basic theory, for me it was a good starting point. Time and discipline are the most important when it comes to playing well so even if it's just 10 mins a day pick up your guitar and practice.

Different things are in focus in different genres. In jazz, it's mostly the melodies/harmonies; in mathrock, maybe the changing rhythms; in rap, its the lyrics etc. Of course there are other things at play as well. I just think that, in many cases, comparing genres is problematic cause they all have a different purpose. That being said, jazz as a genre is way more fundamental.

This comment sounds really pretentious. Matlock definitely has its complexities, and even if it didn't, it doesn't make it any better or worse than any genre. Music isn't automatically good if it's more complex.

I think it’s absolutely valid to rate certain genres by the complexity alone provided that complexity is not just pretentious in of itself. If it’s something coherent or where that coherency can be acquired through study or repeated listening then yes complexity does bring value. Conversely, I’ve heard a lot of simple jazz and ‘simpl-er’ math rock where in both instances the music was beautiful.

@@おいしいパスター maybe the newer age stuff but that's pretty far out there. Traditional jazz marks itsself more by improvisation and traditional jazz form and song structure. The chord extensions, tensions and chromatics people think of when they say 'jazzy' sound are only a small part of it, but even then math rock is harmonically not that different from pop and not 'jazzy'.
I like to imagine the layman would also say all jazz sounds the same because they lack context on how much variety can take place in even just a subgenre

i love math rock but i have to agree. it blew my mind when i first discovered it but now i just have a select few artists i consistently listen to and finding something new from the genre that i genuinely enjoy is so hard. feels like every new song i find is just incoherent, unmemorable noodling and i’m getting bored of it
I don't really listen to math rock specifically, but I'd think the "meat" in the genre are the different rhythms. In jazz, it's all about the melodies and harmonies, and there's usually less variation on the rhythmical side. All metal songs can sound alike for someone who doesn't listen to anything related to it. All coffee brands can taste the same for tea drinkers. You need experience to find all the intricacies and fine details in things.

Then there's Stanley Jordon who combined math rock and jazz in the 80s and then Nels Cline of Wilco in the 90s combined jazz and math rock
