- Our good friend Alex Van Ness is here to share his viking kit that he uses for historical reenactment with us!! A reenactor’s “kit” consists of the clothing, armor, weapons and accessories that we wear and take to events and displays. All of the items included have been researched to the best of his abilities
This is his representation of a wealthy viking warrior from Gnezdovo based upon grave finds and he has worked over several years building and collecting all his gear. Most of the gear is hand made and the clothes are sewn by hand.
If you have any questions or comments about the viking clothes, armor, or weapons displayed here please let us know down below!! We hope you enjoy and thank you for watching !!

Love this! The process of armoring is amazing! Nice video!
Everyone has a slightly different method too! I love to see it !
I saw your first Viking Festival video and it was very pleasing. I look forward to more of your content.
based on what ive learned since i started reenactment.
that type of lamellar plate came from the battle of visby grave dating from the 13th century if i recall.
that helmet looks really iffy.
that baldric on the scabbard is a bit more reliable if its tucked under the waist belt. scabbard stays in place that way instead of being pulled up when drawing the blade.
the ribbons on the leg wraps seemed to be slipping down by the end. maybe switch to something that can be bound tighter like a braid.
that kaftan under the armor could use a basic belt to secure it before the byrnie goes over. a rope will suffice.
still better than any mainstream media has ever bothered to use.
not gonna hate on the painted plywood shields. thats kinda just standard in reenactment everywhere. patterns and colors look reasonable.
just seeing the talking bit at the end after writing this. with that knowledge my main complaint is the anachronistic lamellar and the advice for setup i gave.
Lamellar is only if if looking at outdated sources, the helmet is gnezdovo, the scabard set up much like the lamelar is more eastern.
Heathkliff as in SAO OwO
@@kittokittokoshiki8978 nope. Its heathkliff as in my middle name translated to english. I only watched SAO a few months after starting to use this name. Also in SAO its spelled with a c
@@hilmarheathkliff9511 same thing aka okahego caliber
Amazingly well done video, thank you for sharing this!
🤘
Awesome! Makes me even more eager to get back into armor and swing at my friends!
Yes!!!!
I love it
Not saying I’ve seen a ton of these type videos but a good bit, in my personal opinion this is the best one in video quality/music and historical correctness and looks bad ass also , awsome 🍻
Love both of you,as performers and people. I just discovered an axe throwing range near my home and thought of y'all.
we appreciate you thinking of us!
More like east european Rus Viking accually, your video and armours are amazing anyway
I love you Sarah Logan and come back with riott squad squad squad! GO!
It's amazing how many layers have to be worn while still being able to be mobile. Beyond iron, they had to use wool and wood for padding and protection. It's a lot more complicated than we think!
Exactly!!
Lamellar armor was hardly used in Viking armor not saying they never used it but it was mostly in eastern European and Balkan usage chainmail was the main go to for the Vikings , but you do your thing though .
Alex’s kit is always next level! Love the details and the passion he brings to things, truly well done.
Except the boots are weirdly modern, and why did he wrap tablet weaving on top of the winnigas?
@@TocsTheWanderer the boots have a welted sole to better grip while fighting. And the tablet weave wrapped on top of the winnegas to keep them in place while running and fighting.
Many people who do combat in reenactment run a period style shoe with a modern welted sole as it wears better than traditional turn shoes and prevents having to replace the entire boot or shoe. The design of the boots aside from the sole is accurate and Alex can speak to the woven bands over top the winingas. I don’t use this with my kit, but do use a sewn on hook on the wraps with a slightly different method of wrapping to keep them in place.
Nice video
Is there a shop that sells these kinds of lamellar-armor?
Reminds me of when I had to hit the stores during hurricanes
Icelandic dirt farmers, heh. That's a good joke. I laughed too much at that. Question, who built the kit? I would love to see a kit building video!
He’s collected that kit over several years. Most of the clothes were hand sewn for him by friends in the SCA.
@@raymondrowe8948 The pants, tunics both wool and linen, and kaftan were all hand sewn by April Van Ness.
Wish I had chainmail armor 😆
My understanding is that Norse didn't use Lamellar Armour until after the "Viking Era".
Am I mistaken? Did Vikings wear Lamellar Armour in the Viking Era? Is it an example of one find being applied too liberally? Or is it an an intentional anachronism for the sake of safety?
i think they used whatever they found relevant, and whatever they could get their hands on. there are lamellar armor findings from the swedish viking settlement of birka :).
Lamellar armour is not quite "viking" actually. However, your video is very good :)
Where can I find a pair of pants like these?
For me that played Skyrim, it feels to me that I'm watching Skyrim live action teaching how to wear an armor in real life.
🤘🤘🤘
Guards armor replace or mod has the guards of Riften and kits that look almost identical to this one
It is interesting how similar this looks to Byzantine armor
More of a fantasy rus kit than anything else.
@@rollothewalker5535 Indeed it looks varangian or rus. Slavo germanic or south germanic at best. Obviously that's just the way it looks, as it isnt actually any of that.
Is this a Rhûs viking , or it was quite common into Scandinavia and western Europe ?
It wasn't. There's only been one archeological find of lamellar armor in Scandinavia and they're not even sure its wearer was Norse.
Lamellar armor is bold to use while labeling it as "authentic viking armor".
There's barely any examples of it in Scandinavia, and almost all of them were probably acquired through foreign trade.
Why not just use maille? It's backed up by mountains of evidence, and would be much more appropriate to use in accordance with the title. Demonstrating extremely rare exceptions (if it's even that) as the norm is something you should absolutely not do, especially while claiming "How to Dress Like Real Viking". That's just pure misinformation.
Yeah unfortunately viking reenactment is chock full of lamellar, largely because it looks cool and people want to believe that vikings wore it. Same deal with full face mail aventails on helmets, but at least there is a precedent for the use of those in Sweden during the Vendel era.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Sometimes it's difficult to separate Bogatyr armor from Viking armor.
I need to know what this music is o.o
So I'm thinking the Viking clothing presented here would be that of the richest of the rich?
chainmaille, With lamellar
metal helm,
multiple knives,
spear,
axe,
sword
yes It would be worn by maybe 1% of the entire army.
D plates lamellar ? I thought it was dated to 13th cent
Now I see how to dress like a real viking
🤘
Did Viking use lamellar armor?
Extremly rare, and always on the eastern side of things. But again, it was extremly rare.
이제 성경책을 들고 침대에 앉아 있으면 엄마가 대화하자고 문을 열것이다.
Lamellar armor???
Music ?
It was a song that Alex and some of our Viking friends wrote for our wedding!
Why is it shocking to me Vikings had socks?!
Because you didn't study ;-)
😂😂😂
А это точно не реконструкция древнерусского воина эпохи викингов?
Like, I don't want to be the asshole here, but viking is wrong I feel... I would let rus slip but that's it...
Viking is an action more than a classification of people. And there were lots of Swedish “Vikings” who traveled into modern day Russia and became mixed into the Rus culture.
The definition of what exactly can be classified as a "Viking" and what can not is super tricky, given the Viking Age has, up to the recent past, been very centered specifically on England's history with The Danes. starting with the first raid on English soil and ending with the end of Danish rule in England. Given that the Baltic regions played no role in any of this, it does certainly lead one to question where does "Viking" stop and where does it begin? Of course it was English historians that defined The Viking Age. For my money I prefer actively educating people that Scandinavian Danes fall into the classic definition of Vikings, reminding them however that the Baltic regions had their own distinct dealing with Scandinavians. It is all very much more complex than just the broad concept of everything North of France is a Viking however, and simply stating such can cause the spread of misunderstandings.
@@raymondrowe8948 So it seems we have a lot in common. Are you both still straight edge? I was for 25 years until I turned 45. We can talk for hours about the old sXe hardcore scene. Do you know of Earth Crisis? I bet you do. I grew up on wrestling in the 80s and early 90s. Could talk for hours about that. Are you still into the Nordic/Germanic tribal culture? Are you practicing Heathens? If so, we could talk for hours about that. I hope we can connect. I'd love to chat with both of you about any of this. I live in nearby Pennsylvania. My wife asked me to DL the Homesteady podcast for her exercise walk. I noticed Homesteady interviewed pro wrestlers, so I had to learn more, as I love old school wrestling. We are homesteading here in Central PA surrounded by multiple Amish farms. I am a practicing Germanic historical reconstructionist Heathen. Genetically I am over half Germanic, with a quarter Celtic and quarter Slavic. I hope we can find a way to connect and discuss our passions!
Some of it was part viking part mongolian
Not mongol but east slavic
What my viiking cosplay be like is : viking tunic (blue) black pants kinda like that one , black broad belt with rings on with multiple straps , arm ring and necklace with fenrir and mjolnir , black bracers and i think some studs on bracers , black shoulder bont , maybe soon leather armor. Now the items on belt: an axe with some black leather cover for safety , drinkhorn , black leather pouch with mjllnor as emblem , and a blowing horn. Looking for sword and a dagger.
Look has to be lil classic viking , not too modern and rich. Tell me what u think about my outfit . Its personally my pickin of favors i like 😊😅
"traditional viking wedding" - did you guys disembowel a slave for good luck and fortune? ;)
We didn’t go QUITE that far 😂
Viking???? That looks very slavic
sorry but this is not Viking gear
Depends where and what century this is Rus, (aka Rus Viking) which would place it in later end of the "Viking Age". "Vikings" refers to the Scandinavian raiders who expanded out from out from Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries around the Baltic sea. Rus Vikings, as stated in the video, where Scandinavians who spread eastward down the Vulga River, into the land of the Rus, aka Russia. If he were to depict say a 9th century Dane, only to truly wealthy would have worn Chain Maile, owned a proper sword, and worn something akin, to a Valsgard helm, or a Spangen helm. The form having the iconic eye guards, the latter being a nasel helm with cheek plates. For his chosen time and place he is accurately to the arms and armor of a wealthy Rus Viking.
Not Viking gear . Trash
The worst kitt I've ever seen
