- Welcome to the newest episode of TECH U THROUGH
In this episode, I want to share with You, how to create and run macOS Big Sur from an external drive (HDD or SSD).
All the steps to create and run macOS Big Sur from an external hard drive:
Step 1
Get an EMPTY external hard drive (for faster installation time, boot and performance choose an SSD)
Step 2
Connect it to Your Mac
Step 3
Restart Your Mac. Before it shows the Apple logo, start to hold Command (⌘) + R buttons together until You see the loading bar.
That will bring You to the recovery mode panel.
Step 4
In the recovery mode panel, select Disk Utility (the 4th option from the top).
Step 5
On Disk Utility's left side You’ll see all Your internal and external drives.
The upper ones are internal drives (DON’T choose them).
You need to choose the external drive on which You want to install the macOS.
Step 6
Click on that external drive and then click ERASE from the top upper right menu.
Step 7
Choose APFS in the Format section and then click ERASE (it’s not necessary to change the name of the drive).
Step 8
Quit Disk Utility (Command ⌘ + Q). You’ll be back to the main Recovery Mode panel.
Step 9
Choose REINSTALL MACOS BIG SUR (2nd option from the top).
Follow all the steps, agree to the terms and wait for Your Mac to complete the installation.
Step 10
When the installation process has completed and You want to run macOS from a freshly created external drive, connect it to Your Mac, restart the Mac You connected the new drive to, and before the Apple logo appears, hold down the Option (or Alt) ⌥ key until You see all the drives.
Choose Your external macOS drive and click the Return ↵ key.
That's all! :)

Amazing! Thanks so much for the tutorial. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for ages. Cheers mate.
Thank You!!! 🙏🏻😊😊😊👍🏻
Thank you so much for this video. Watching it and following the instructions saved me from having to delete the whole of my iMac as it wasn’t booting up, and I didn’t have enough HDD to reinstall BigSur.
Thank You for the kind words 🙏🏻 I’m very happy that the video helped You out! 👍🏻
Very useful video. Thanks

Hi, Thanks for your video. I now have a fresh copy of Big Sur on an external HD that I can open on my 2014 iMac. However, I cannot access the data on my Mac. I had issues upgrading to Big Sur - endless install loops/stalling, and read others having the same issue.I think it is because my iMac has partitions - one for the system and one for data, but when I try to upgrade the system, it tries to put a new system on the data partition. Do you know of a way I can access my files from my mac HD?
Outstanding!
I know it's pretty randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream new movies online?
@Grant Brandon I watch on flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Grant Brandon I use Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
I looked this up for the last week, and couldn't do this, and spent money on 3 ssd drives, and finally got it that's to you!, ( I have 2 spare drives, but all good) lol, wish I had Wat he'd your video first, lol, thanks man muuuch appreciate it,. I'm new to Mac, I'm usually an Alienware PC guy for years, but started using Mac for music production,. Next I want to turn my Mac into a Hacintosh win/Mac, do you have a video for that?,.. If not thanks again man!!
Hi! Happy to hear that everything worked out well 👍🏻
About Hacintosh’s 🤔 never thought about it 😄 Have to think once again 😊
You saved my life. Initially cloned my old imac HDD to new external SSD. However it seems that Big Sur didn't allow any booting from external drives. My external SSD appears on Disk Utility, but it doesn't show up on Startup Disk Selection. Pressing Option key during bootup doesn't do anything for me.
Just when I was about to give up I stumbled across your video. Now my external SSD can boot up with no issues, but I have to install the OS alll over again without my files from the old HDD (not a big deal, nothing much on the HDD)
Thank you so much!
You should have been able to install the OS over the cloned drive, preserving your files, as long as you formatted the clone as APFS. Were you unable to?
@@maccentric i have no idea why i couldn't. The cloned drive (SSD) was formatted as APFS and when i was done, I went into startup disk selection but the cloned drive was nowhere to be seen. All that's available was the source drive (Mac HDD) which i cloned from. Next thing I did was to reboot into recovery by hitting Cmd + R, but it didn't work. Tried mashing an alternative combination of keys which i googled (forgot what the combination was) and thank god i was able to get into the set up screen as shown in this video.
Followed the rest of the steps in the video and I was able to reinstall a copy of bigsur from scratch. Didn't matter if i couldn't clone the old HDD over since there wasn't much important stuff on it.
Just wondering why I couldnt get into recovery using Cmd + R and why the earlier cloned drive didn't show up in startup disk selection though.
Thanks this is very clearly presented. If one is running Mac OS Yosemite, which I don't think has the APFS volume option, how that mean you can't install a bootable Big Sur onto the SSD directly?
Hi! I never upgraded to Big Sur from Yosemite, but usually, Apple allows you to upgrade from older versions and it doesn’t care that you don’t have the necessary ssd format. But this time, through the Recovery Mode, it gave me no other option, that was surprising to me too, esepcially, because it informed me wrong at first that I need MacOS Extended (Journaled).
About the APFS, it firstly appeared only on High Sierra as an option to later manually choose this new format if formatting the drive, but High Sierra and newer macOS ugrades still worked on MacOS Extended.
I'm having the same problem. APFS isn't there.
@@ericsokoine no. Took it to a mac specialist and he sorted it out for me
Great. But now what do I do with the internal drive?
In my macbook air 2017 I dont have thunderbolt 3 , what can I do?
Aha should be APFS. Thanks!
I think you can instsall a NON Apple PCIE SSd on this machine. There is a $10 adapter that has the Apple connectors and takes a standard PCIE SSD that costs much less than the Apple PCIE.
hi if u want to keep one version on main machine but then programs need latest to run can u run macOS Big Sur on extremal drive ? and then run a program on it and use as normal ?
if so be grateful for the help
Hi! As of what I understand is that you can run one or the other macOS, depending on, which one you booted from (Macs system or macOS on an external drive).
You can’t use both.
So therefor, you can use and update your apps on one or the other macOS, because they are two seperate systems, like two differnet macs running from one, if you know what I mean :)
@@TechUThrough thanks only ask as some software have now needs update and dont really want to update os on one
have u ever run windows 10 on mac and with external graphics card to ?
Can I use external drive but without formatting? thank you.
Hi! Thank You for the question. Unfortunately, we must format our drives, a full format or a partition of the drive format should be performed for any OS to be installed on it for it to run as intended.
Once you have the Big Sur update installed on the external HD and you are booted back up, is there a way to delete files from the main hard drive so it can be installed there? We are having this problem with the latest update. We are 4.5 gb short on space
Hi! Could you please be more specific? You installed Big Sur on the external drive and want to access files on the main Mac from the external boot?
@@TechUThrough Yes, it worked! Thanks so much for your video! I was able to run from the external, delete some things from the Mac hard drive and then finish the Big Sur update on the Mac.
Is it possible with T2 chip based Mac computer especially Mac Pro 2019(not macbook pro)
There is an option to turn high security for T2 macs off in the restart process.

How to copy files from faulty ssd after starting from external hard drive
hello! t is possible to install mac os on an external hard drive other than ssd?
Hi! Of course. Just that SSD's are booting the macOS faster, that's basically it.
Hey man, I cannot find APFS on my macbook pro 2019 big sur, i can only see Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)... how do i get apfs? pls help badly need it for school
Hi! Try formatting in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) first, restart again, return to the same Recovery mode and maybe it shows APFS after that step (please make sure to format the drive only when Your files are safe and the external disk is empty).
In Disk Utility you probably first have to choose the scheme "GUID" and only then you can choose the format APFS.

how is the performace on the macbook air via usb 3.0
Hi! The performance should be very good if the macOS has been installed on an SSD as an external drive source. Air or Pro is secondar.
Can we boot from Intel based Mac hardisk on Mac M1 machine
Hi! That's a great question. Haven't tried that. But As M1 Macs came with a brand new macOS on them, we would have to create a new bootable external hard drive anyway and at that moment the external drive wouldn't be the old Intel macOS-created drive anymore 😊
But technically, I'm thinking that the M1 mac should recognize a previously created bootable macOS drive created from an Intel mac. A different question would M1 allow restoring from an older bootable drive!? 🤔
I’m using a mac mini late 2012 with Catalina, when i try to upgrade to big sur i can’t.the main reason is because i cannot boot to efi mode so i can choose the ssd,any hell? Command R or any other option does not work to boot it
Hi! Make sure You have created the bootable macOS USB drive the right way. Many have problems with different methods of creating a bootable macOS usb flash.
@@TechUThrough The problem until now is not the drive itself but not able to boot in dfu mode, even trying all command command R or Press the power button until it shows up the info, none of these appears with or without the bootable USB I have created for that.
I tryed to install like that …but after the Apple Logo it restarts booting from Original internal Ssd … so the installation process is not coming to end! I don‘t know why?! Is there something that i might to do before i install?
Hi. That may happen, though rare. Could You tell me how far did You get? Did You format the external SSD and already installed the macOS, or just formatted the external drive and couldn't complete the installation process?
Do I have to leave the hard drive connected?
You can disconnect it after restarting Your Mac to its default OS
How I found your video is by searching the problem in the latest M1 chip that continuously swapping memory & wears out SSD.
My question to you is "What if the internal SSD dies soon because of this problem, can we still use an external hard disk as a bootable disk?" I know there would be a performance issue but I think this would be a better option than throwing it off.
Or is there any way to change the disk to an external disk for swap memory?
I'm asking because I purchased my first mac mini m1 16 GB for long-term use.
Hi!
I haven't used/purchased the new M1 MacBooks yet so I can not guarantee anything before testing it first.
But, if it's a brand new M1 Mac You should not worry for at least many more years after using it daily for any tasks.
About the macOS booting from an external drive on an M1 Mac, I red that it should be possible.
So basically, You don't need to worry about a brand new M1 Mac or any SSD problems.
@@TechUThrough hey I bought a new 24 inch I Mac with the 256 gb drive. I’ve been trying to run macOS Big Sur off an external drive. Wondering if you had any luck?
@@frankolvera1337 Hi! Thank You for the question. Haven't had my hands on the new iMac, so I can not confirm. Did You try my method on it? Did it work?
@@TechUThrough it’s not letting me change the boot disks. I even went out and bought an external ssd
Thought it was cause of my older hard drive but still no luck.
@@frankolvera1337 Hi! Have You reached the point where I showed in my video to format the drive in APFS when in the Recovery Mode?
1) Start by restarting Your Mac by holding COMMAND + R keys
2) Log-in if asked and connect to the wifi on the upper right corner
3) And choose Disk Utility
4) After that, click on Your external SSD that You bought (must be already connected before restart)
5) Click ERASE and choose APFS format
That should work.
APFS! THIS SAVED MY ASS
Happy to hear! 👍🏻
What if it doesn’t show APFS as an option
Hi! As You saw in my video, the APFS format option should appear in all cases. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disappeared later, but APFS was the only last option standing :)
can I use sandisk external ssd?
Hi! You can use any preffered external ssd! 👍🏻
@@TechUThrough Pendrive (USB-C) too?
Can run an application from external ssd without installing macos? Currently I have catalina on internal
Hi. You have to install macOS on an external drive, otherwise, you just can't run an application from a plain external drive. You can put the application on an empty external drive, but once you open it, it will be opened through the Mac, not the external drive.
The macOS installed on the external drive is useful basically if there is a problem to start macOS on your Mac computer, that way you can boot macOS from the external drive.
@@TechUThrough thank you sir.
Is there way to connect my external ssd using thunderbolt 2 port in my macbook air 2017?
@@claretesnishoban2658 most new external ssd's have a standard USB Type-C to the old USB type A chord that comes with it. That one will work with the speed for at least USB 3.0 if not 3.1
@@TechUThrough oh if I buy thunderbolt 2 to type c will it worth ?
@@claretesnishoban2658 never heard about such a cable
do i need to have 2 macbooks in order to do this
Hi! No, as You can see in the video, all is done from one Mac only with the external drive attached.
@@TechUThrough alright thank you! i will give it a try later. however does that mean i cannot run Big Sur if i don’t have my external drive attached?
@@iffahrafiinn4935 no. As I showed in the video, You can choose the Big Sur source on the startup by holding down the OPTION key and choose from which drive to start. I thought I filmed all the steps!? :D Yes, I did :)
Basically, the external drive is for safety, if a different or your mac doesn't run.
is your mac m1 or intel?
Hi! This video is an example shown with the Intel MacBook Pro 16 inch laptop.
Apfs is not there for me. Any help?
Hi! Sorry for the late response.
Try formatting in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) first, restart again, return to the same Recovery mode and maybe it shows APFS after that step (please make sure to format the drive only when Your files are safe and the external disk is empty).
