Watching this and looking back on the series, Sybil's character makes sense. She is the youngest, so the estate will probably just be Mary's estate and since she is starting to become an adult she is realizing how she wants to help the world through politics and nursing. She is my absolute favorite character because she isn't just sitting around, but she stands for what she believes in.
For me, I cannot get enough of Hugh Bonneville. Such a honey!!! Oh - and I also love the show, as it's so refreshing to be able to actually care about the characters.
I attended a lecture Julian Fellowes gave at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, on Anne Boleyn. I teach the history of Tudor England at a local college, so I was enthralled with the breadth of his knowledge. I actually spent about an hour talking to him after the lecture, and it was a tremendous experience. I remember seeing him on the screen in "Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins, and have loved his work ever since!
I've watched this series, and love the way the characters were "developed." One example is Cora. She's a nice lady, but occasionally shows her venom. Then there's the battle between Mary and Edith. There's Thomas the footman, seemingly "together," but not really. Best of all is the old granny, the Dowager Countess, with her battles with Mrs. Crawley. Of course I haven't forgot the butler, the cooks, and of course the others in this story.
If Downton Abbey was a feature film it would win 9 Oscars and break box office records. It’s in the class of The Kings Speech. Beautifully filmed, directed, cast, costume design, script, sound, music, best actor and actress.
@Kittalia I agree, the 20th century was absolutely incredible when you think about just how much changed- culturally, technologically, socially. How everything before then had progressed relatively slowly. But in just those years, the change in music, harnessing of electricity, the introduction of film, tv, the change of clothing, sexual equality, transport- could go on and on and on...
We love the characters because we love the writing. Good actors cannot save bad writing, but good actors (which the entire cast is) will thrive in a well written character and storyline.
Does anyone know what book Julian Fellowes was reading about the American Heiresses who migrated over to England and married into the Aristocracy? This is my favorite period of history and I am very interested to read about that aspect of it. The only one I am really familiar with is Nancy Lancaster (Lady Astor). Please message back if you know, and thanks! Loved GOSFORD PARK and love Julian Fellowes' writing!
This has whetted my interest more - especially the vision of Fellowes regarding this not being about carriages and crenolins so much as about the beginning of the modern world. I agree - that transition is fascinating - and it happened very fast. Looking forward to this.
i really must stop reading comments, im just getting into season 2 and i got a spoiler down below :( i already knew about one cast death before i even started season 2, to all latecoming fans like myself, please, get off the internet before you've caught up, spare yourself! even despite the spoilers, i will still watch and enjoy this remarkable series! Long Live the Abbey!
@pratyeka Thanks. At least there are two of us who believe that there's more importance in the quality of acting than the appearance and intelligence of actresses. I'm also very surprised at how many people gave that comment a thumbs up, but I guess I shouldn't be...there are a lot of people who like to vent about how much or how little this or that celebrity weighs.
@MariannaNYC09 ... YES, YES, YES, Downton Abbey is coming back in the AUTUMN (Fall) on ITV, in the UK. And I for one cannot wait, so I will have to content myself with veiwing the DVD set until then...YIPPEE CONGRATULATIONS TOO, to CATHERINE AND WILLIAM on their marriage today, I watched it on telly and was amazed and alittle teary too, if truth be told, but it was WONDERFUL :0)x
Julian Fellowes writer of "Downton Abbey" takes an easy out when warping up his story-- the war begins and that is all!!!! What happens to all the characters? It's up to us to do the work of a good writer. The acting, period customes, and setting were wonderful.
Rydel6 - I wish I'd listened!! I just got the spoiler too :o( come on people - this is up there with Harry Potter! There is a Code of Silence around the plot and characters!!! Please if you've not yet finished watching the series DO NOT READ COMMENTS BELOW!! It is only a few down below this so do not be tempted!!! Gutted that I was!!!!
@MariannaNYC09 ... Oh yes indeed Mr Pamuk, the Turkish Ambassador's son.. Yummy indeed.. shame he was only in it for one episode though... Role on Autumn, series 2 is coming to ITV in the UK... YIPPEE :0)x
0:38 "A television series... you've got 8 hours or something to play with." - What the British call a series we'd call a mini-series. 3:03 "...the question of the entail" ..they used that word in the series. First I'd heard of it . - (poetry follows): Entail: An estate whose succession is limited to certain people rather than passed to all heirs.- A conveyance of land subject to restrictions, namely, that it may only descend to certain specified heirs.
@marmas58ink The show costs a fortune... a million dollars an episode. None of the actors in this series get anything like the salaries actors would in a big american series. Taking into account this is essentially made for an british audience, which is about 60 million..1 million is like spending 5 million an episode for a big american tv show.
@MariannaNYC09 Hello again... I am hoping that Thomas gets his come-uppance and that Anna and Mr Bates get together, asfter all his Mother liked her... but i have heard a whisper over here that Bates' wife turns up, to cause trouble... Oh oh.... And I wonder who will take Mary on, 'now she is damaged goods'.. will Matthew come back??? Will Edith get her older man?? Will Cybil go to anymore rallys??? I cannot wait, but i will have too... :0)x
@emidore Hear, hear! Let's not shame any kind of women, no matter what they look like. There are plenty of fantastic actresses out there today of all sizes and shapes and there's no need to put down one just because we like another. Horrifying how many people "liked" that cruel comment up there.
Its unbelievable that after finishing writing the script they were only going to have one season, can you imagine if season 1 was it! it would be so open-ended to be unbearable.
@gageiiiiitttt I am more lucky because i can see her almost every day ;-D So nice to work in hotel that they staying since first season. I can say they all are privately very nice people;-) Hard not to like them.
@emidore Well some stars are way to thin, so yeah. Im thinish myself but not like actresses today. To me cruves are so much more attractive than bone, so i woudn't agree that she'd be as beautiful as she is now- looking at her in a role model type way. And have you ever heard the quote "beauty without intelligence is a masterpiece painted on a napkin" hmm, maybe you haven't
Authentic costumes, furniture, castle, but with such an abundance of 21st Century political correctness as to make it a smash it..... even if no viewer liked it. It's foreboding that everyone does like it. .
Oh dear! Lord Grantham, I do not like you with a beard! The Dowager will have forty fits if she sees you so embellished, I dread to think of her cutting words!
Jessica Brown-Findlay is surely one of the most beautiful actresses currently on television! So underrated. And this show is just phenomenal.
I love Jessica Brown-Findlay's voice, and Joanne Froggatt's such a great actress :) love Downton Abbey!

Jessica has the most beautiful voice. And face. I love her character!
Jessica is so beautiful. Love her voice!
is it just me that loves Jessica's voice? its so gravely, i just love it! haha
I love Jessica. She is so beautiful. I love her face and personality!!
For me, I cannot get enough of Hugh Bonneville. Such a honey!!!

Mr Julian Fellows is a brilliant writer.I am so glad there will be another series of Downton Abbey it is bloddy brilliant.
If Downton Abbey was a feature film it would win 9 Oscars and break box office records. It’s in the class of The Kings Speech. Beautifully filmed, directed, cast, costume design, script, sound, music, best actor and actress.
Sigh I am so ready for series two..Loved this show.
i remember julian fellowes. he use to be on one of my favorite english shows 'monarch of the glen'.
Same! It's soo nice and gentle. And yeah, I love how it's smokey.

Interesting to see an interview prior to the series even airing. Before they had any idea how huge it was going to be.
Hugh Bonneville takes my breath away. I want one.
Anna is so lovely)))
This has whetted my interest more - especially the vision of Fellowes regarding this not being about carriages and crenolins so much as about the beginning of the modern world. I agree - that transition is fascinating - and it happened very fast.
Looking forward to this.
When's this start in Australia?
They've been advertising it, but IDK when it begins :/
Jessica was also in Misfits for an episode, she's beautiful. Never seen this show but will try to watch it. Period-dramas are the best

i'm the only one that loves Hugh's beard?? XD
Starts @ 3:25
@karenofbethany Could it be 'The Buccaneers'?? Just an idea, but that does cover that sort of material.
I hate it when the highest rated comments focus on the looks of a girl.
Try to comment on the whole video come on.
@MariannaNYC09 ... Oh yes indeed Mr Pamuk, the Turkish Ambassador's son.. Yummy indeed.. shame he was only in it for one episode though... Role on Autumn, series 2 is coming to ITV in the UK... YIPPEE :0)x
i really did not think that JF had it in him.....what a pleasant surprise...
Lady Sybil, speak her mind, and stand for women right .. I think she so intersting ..
@seddiefan65176 Just out of curiousity, what's first?
Little did anyone know when they did these interviews what was about to happen ....
0:38 "A television series... you've got 8 hours or something to play with." - What the British call a series we'd call a mini-series.

Hugh Bonneville from the same area as Colin Firth? Same voice, manner of talking, word choice, facial expressions.
@marmas58ink The show costs a fortune... a million dollars an episode. None of the actors in this series get anything like the salaries actors would in a big american series. Laura Carmichael is so pretty, so different to her character Lady Edith
@emidore Hear, hear! Let's not shame any kind of women, no matter what they look like. There are plenty of fantastic actresses out there today of all sizes and shapes and there's no need to put down one just because we like another. Horrifying how many people "liked" that cruel comment up there.
Oh my God. How hot is Jessica Jane-Findlay!!
I can say they all are privately very nice people;-) Hard not to like them.
love lady Sybil character i kind hope that she end up with Matthew
They didn’t love each other. What!!!??
I want to date Brown-Findlay, blue dress 24/7.
A neutral background would have been far preferable to what was chosen.
I thought Lady Edith was the youngest of the three sisters
hugh bonneville looks like colin firth
OMG Hugh Bonneville with messy beard!!
Why ever I read Downton Video comments I read them in a British accent in my head... So wrong.
@kiwibeca Oh right, It is sooo ship captain and so not Lord of a house!!!!
Lady Edith Crawley = Jan Brady
@emidore Well some stars are way to thin, so yeah. Im thinish myself but not like actresses today. wow, with a beard he kind of resembles Mel Gibson
look at lord granthems beard!
hahahaha! I love that. He does look quite sexy in it.
What kind of sense does that make about her voice?
Let's hope the series itself is a bit more interesting.
I don't think it's going to be very successful.
Whoaaa Jessica Jane-Findlay is hot hot hot ;)
Authentic costumes, furniture, castle, but with such an abundance of 21st Century political correctness as to make it a smash it..... even if no viewer liked it.
It's foreboding that everyone does like it. .
Also people would've been far more religious
Cybil is the sexiest, Jessica brown my my
I know! VERY SEXY! WOOO!!! lol
why is it that all the good actors in dramas and films always grow a sodding beard as soon as production finishes?
It sounds like she went out the night before at some loud club. Not good.
lol sorry :|
Oh dear! Lord Grantham, I do not like you with a beard! The Dowager will have forty fits if she sees you so embellished, I dread to think of her cutting words!
Julian Fellowes looks like the least posh of them all, go figure.
Lose the beard Hugh, it doesn't suit you!!!!
