I've always had respect for Mike Rinder. As someone who lost their father to cancer, I have a great deal of sympathy for his family. He was blessed to have you two as friends
Thank you, Karen and Jon. Like Scrooge, Mike more than redeemed himself. He was a gentle man who never stopped criticizing the cult and helped so many people leave to live happier lives.
Mr Rinder offered advice I have never heard anyone else comment on that I always impart to others venturing into this unsafe world of criticising a cult. He will be missed but never forgotten. I also was fobbed off by Mr Mustard on 1 Dec 2023 when I requested the peer-reviewed studies he had claimed to exist that propped up his assertions of a cure. A vital principle for anyone in this domain: on the mere sniff of a smear-campaign look for bad intentions. Sorry for your loss Jon & Karen. RIP Mike
I was never involved in Scientology, but my curiosity about it was aroused when I saw the documentary Going Clear. That led me to Scientology and the Aftermath. That was when I first saw Mike Rinder.I watched the entire series, then listened to Mike and Leah’s podcast,Fair Game.As soon as Mike began to become more well known and respected by people like me,all these people started coming out of the woodwork like termites, saying horrible things about him.A short time after that,he announced that he was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.Very similar to the late Christopher Hitchens.I cried so much that day.And the attacks continued.I do not know what he did all those years when he was involved in that cult, but he tried to make up for any wrongdoings after he left.He passed away on my daughter’s birthday.I had to apologize to her for crying all day and turning her special day into a downer. My late Dad passed when I was only ten years old from kidney failure and mt Mom died from a massive brain bleed.I know what it is to see someone you love waste away to nothing.I had a burst brain aneurysm in 2011 and almost died myself. But I cannot express my gratitude to you,Jon and Karen, for a lovely and positive tribute to a man I grew to admire and respect more with each passing day.And to all the haters out there, one day it will be your turn to be on the receiving end of attacks and lies about you.RIP,dear Mr.Rinder.
My condolences to both of you. Thank you for this video honouring Mike. So sad that he could not have his adult children with him, disconnection is a terrible tragedy. Thank you Jon you are such an amazing man and thank you for exposing Scientology.❤
Thank you both for speaking about Mikes redemption and what a good man he was❤ He was the first to say what horrible things he was directed to do,did he have anymore chance to resist miscavage then anybody .How dare people stand in judgment without standing in his shoes 😢
Thanks Karen and Jon! Anybody who wants to hear Jeffrey Augustine (Karen's husband) interviewing Mike Rinder from years back, google "Surviving Scientology Radio". Mike Rinder is in Episodes 1, 18, 25, 27, and 38 from 2014 through 2016. Should be on most podcast platforms. I used Podbean to identify the episodes. Other episodes feature Marc Headley, Claire Headley, Mat Pesch, Chris Shelton, Gary 'Jackson' Morehead, Jefferson Hawkins, Chuck Beatty, Pete Griffiths, Mareka Brousseau, Mark Fisher, Jesse Prince, Bill Franks, Dan Koon, Ron Miscavige Sr., and of course both Jon Atack and Karen de la Carriere.
Rest in peace Mike. He made great effort to atone for his actions while I'm scientology for the rest of his life. To me that shows he was a good person at his core.
The background is interesting. I imagine the innocent ex-Scientologists who haven't fully shed their indoctrination may be manipulated by malign actors a little more easily than those who are fully recovered. Mike didn't deserve their attacks, and I hope they realize that some day.
He was a very brave soul. He was a formidable adversary and slave/servant to scientology, but he also became their formidable adversary as an escapee who triumphed through his own eventual freedom.
Mike Rinder gave himself a chance to be his true self, which was a kind, brave, loving man with a conscience. The means are the end; the end never justifies the means. Every action matters, not just the end result.
This is so true. Hubbard convinced us that the only way to save humanity was to follow his orders. Mike was an empath and Hubbard weaponised him as part of his paranoid scheme to control the world. Mike realized and rather than fading into the woodwork - as the hundreds of other harassment operatives did - he risked everything to bring the cult down and save his kids. And absolutely the means are the end - we have to walk the talk and keep our hearts clear of vengeful urges. Mike passed with a clean conscience. He was one of a kind and we'll miss him dreadfully.
Jamie Mustard - "running a behind the scenes OSA." Thank you Jon for bringing this information public. I knew Jamie was a bad dude. It was just a feeling I had when I first saw him. It's too bad that so many ex-scientologists fell for this.
Jamie had the most awful childhood - courtesy of Ron Hubbard. I don't think he's a bad man. I think he chose the wrong target because his parents abandoned him and he cannot understand how any parent can do that. In his situation, I'd probably feel the same way. He lived through horrors. Just like Mike, he can redeem himself - he's a talented man. I'm sure that Mirriam meant no harm, she was just swept away by a fog of supposition and circumstantial evidence.
A fantastic conversation and homage to Mike. Thanks for sharing important truths. It’s not fair that some younger “second gens” have such tunnel vision and lack of critical thinking when it comes to Mike, who himself was a “second gen” and indoctrinated from a very young age. Jon, you hit the nail in sharing Mike’s invitation that people with evidence of crimes should go to the police. If they are so sure Mike was so terrible, why haven’t they gone to the police with the receipts. If none exist, how can they be so sure that Mike did what they want to accuse him of. May God rest Mike’s soul and keep in close in eternal joy.
My deepest sympathies on the loss of your dear friend Mike Rinder. I loved watching Jon & Mike’s videos and I am saddened there will be no more of them!
Thank you for clearing up the allegations made by Miriam. Unfortunately Aaron when he was asked to leave the foundation made accusations against Mike and stirred up a hornets nest because people believed him. He was asked to leave because of continuous bad behavior. and just recently that behavior has come to light again. In spite of what Mike did when he was in Scientology I totally agree with you that he has more than redeemed himself
Yes, interesting hearing the background. Too often the abused in needing to get their understandable anger out, feel entitled to take it out on anyone they can find that’s more accessible or comfortable than those who caused their abuse. Had a counselor stress that that not only damages the abused. It unfortunately makes them abusive. They said a significant proportion of those in prison are there because of misplaced anger from being abused.
Condolence to Mike Rinder‘s family and friends. Very interesting dialogue- especially 3 points. 1. Mike Rinder‘s Life was obviously divided in several parts. His childhood and adolescence in Australia in Scientology. His formation in the Sea Org and OSA to one of the leading men of Scientology. He was a villain and a victim in Scientology at The same TIME! When he left he tried to make amendments for the evil things he did. This alone is a big effort and an exception. Of course he was not perfect - but this effort alone has all my respect. This journey to an humanitarian world view was not spotless - of course. Different from other victims it gave him money and made him a celebrity. Fair deal. I do not appreciate how he dealt with a co-founder of the Aftermath association. This was betrayal of a friend. His latest videos about this previous friend and than opponent were very strange to me. They gave me a cringe and artificial feeling. Nevertheless a great person - with all due respect he was an honorable man if you have a vision for his life as a whole. I respect him - he leaves a exceptional legacy. 2. Very interesting your remarks about Jamie Mustard. A victim - of course. But a man with an agenda. For me he was a little bit too enthusiastic about this „revolutionary treatment against PTSD“. Just a gut feeling - I did not trust him and this „wonder injection“. For me it is clear that an Association that wants to help victims has the right to ask questions about how funds should be spend in order to help. When a method is not yet evaluated properly and an evidence based medical standard it is cautious and just to be prudent. The role of Jamie Mustard as an ghostwriter for Mirriam was unknown to me. Very suspicious…… 3. I am glad that you Mr. Jon Attac are not participating in the witch-hunt between Aaron Smith Levin‘s dirty bed linens. I do not appreciate his conduct but as a woman of a certain age I say it takes two to tango. A woman has also a responsibility to judge whether a new sexual relationship makes sense or not. These are grownups and I am rather not interested what they are doing at night. Of course it leaves a taste of haut gout to try to convince a niece of D Miscavadge to start a relationship when you are still married and a public anti - Scientology person. At least if you do not have only honest intentions and want to pursue a very flexible sexual life. But the lady is over 40 and rumors about Mr. Smith Levin were easily found online. Bad taste is not criminal. I perceived a slight tension between You Mr. Jon Attac and Mr. Smith Levin about 2 years ago. You did not seem to be a fan of him. I appreciate that you did not participate in a meaningless discussion about bad tastes in sexual relationships today. Wonderfully British and European. As a German I do appreciate this very much! Thank you both for this interesting dialogue and food for thoughts on occasion of the remembrance of Mike Rinder’s life and legacy. Greetings from Hamburg 🛳🛳🛳
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I've never fallen out with Aaron. I was surprised in the only interview we recorded when he said that Scn has some good ideas in it, but needs to be reworded. I asked for an example and he said the ARC triangle. I deconstructed that (affinity doesn't always raise when communication does - as Hubbard said, 'bullets too are communication') and added a deconstruction of the bizarre idea that problems can be solved by giving one vote to each of the dynamics (one for you and only one for all of mankind - somewhat narcissistic!). Aaron was unmoved. When asked about recovery, he said he'd had no 'existential crisis' on leaving, but didn't seem to think that people need to recover. This would have been simply interesting, if he hadn't been on the board of a charity seeking to help people escape and recover from Scn. But I really liked him. He's quick, smart, witty and has a good grasp of information. I joined Aftermath to protect it from the cascade of crap that threatened to engulf it. I joined to make public my support for Mike. But I also joined to see if I could calm down the internecine war in the Scn-watching world. Aaron and I last spoke in June last year. As far as I know, we're on good terms. And Aaron expressed genuine concern about Mike during that call. I think Mike was right to unburden his view of the relationship and its demise. He and Claire had kept quiet about the real reasons for the rift. A board member on a charity should not live a life that conflicts with the aims of that charity. Aaron was deeply upset and made videos casting aspersions against Mike. Mike stayed quiet for a year before unburdening as an act of relief of the built up tensions he was suffering. He was profoundly upset by comments on the last video we did (in March last year) where I put Mirriam and Mustard's questions to him, in the hope that evidence would overcome 'feeling of knowing.' He was so upset that he cancelled the series of videos we were going to record about the operations he ran. He just couldn't take any more - coping with terminal cancer as he was, and the dreadful knowledge that his 12-year-old son would have to grow up without him. Thanks again for taking time to comment!
I guess we know why Marty Rathbun withdrew from his and his wife's promising law suit for the scientology harassment of his wife, who was never in scientology but who still was harassed merely for marrying Marty. Five million dollars is cheap for scientology to buy someone's silence. And then Marty avoided paying his lawyers, who had been working for free on his case.
I think the answer is in Louis Theroux's documentary toward the end where the Scn harassment team ask him if he is 'making his nut' from working with Theroux and then drops a comment about the child he and his wife had just adopted. I think it was soon afterward explained to him that if they made any complaint, the child would be taken away. He may well have received five million dollars as well. His wife was winning the case, as best I can tell.
How sensitive and empathic of you to inject your Shakespeare authorship antics into a heartfelt memorial. And btw - You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon. You muppet.
In every single video on any channel with Karen, her mic is constantly peaking. It really makes her hard to listen to no matter the subject matter. On topic, farewell Mike Rinder and thanks for all the fish.
I think it is years since Karen last 'audited' anyone. If you have evidence to the contrary, please share it. Most ex-members continue to believe and to practice. I knew David Mayo while he was still auditing back in the 80s. When I spoke to him in 2013, he explained his journey away from the 'Technology'. How he had come to believe that none of it is valid. Hana Whitfield was still auditing people when I met her, and continued to do so while steering the Freedom for All In Religion class action Indeed, my advice - which the lawyers loved - to use the offer of the state of clear as the common cause, was rejected because Hana and the other five on the steering committee did not want to 'denigrate' the state of clear. A couple of years later, Hana rejected Scn and became an intervention counsellor. It took Karen time to break away from decades of conditioning and trauma bonding.
Great conversation in honour of a man who's loss is felt by us all. Thank you, Jon and Karen!
Beautiful conversation. Loved the acknowledgements of all his great work! You both are great friends.
Thank you for revealing what really went on behind the scenes. It's so important that this information gets out to people. Mike was a beautiful soul.
