I understand the difference in body size and store size, now. Thank you. I wear a 6 or 8 in the stores but according to the body size measurements I am a 14 - I have always been a bit confused about that. I purchase patterns for my bust size and thankfully, most patterns come with multiple size fittings, which makes it so much easier to fit. Thank you for the video, I have sewed my own and my family's clothes for years, but never understood the differentials.
It depends on what you want to make. For a top, I would pick a size according to my bust as this is the hardest to fit & we want the shoulders to look great. For pants/skirt, go according to your hips. On our channel, we have tutes for altering patterns to increase/decrease waist, hip, bust so you can make the changes you need to the patterns. for a dress you can do size 12 in bodice & increase the waist. Pick size 20 for skirt portion & decrease waist to get the two pieces to fit together.
We have a separate tutorial for each element of altering the bust, waist and hip, 6 total tutorials. On our channel we have increase bust, decrease bust, increase waist, decrease waist, increase hip and decrease hip. We also have one for increase sleeve width and armhole of bodice for those that are increasing the bustline by more than 4". These are easy alterations so you can pick a size that fits your bustline but maybe need to increase (or decrease) hipline a little for the perfect fit.
Thank you for this. At 50 years old, I have just taken up sewing and I was totally freaked out to find out I was a size 14 for sewing, and not the normal size 10 I wear retail! I was sooo depressed, I have been crash dieting for a week! HA!! Thanks again...this was VERY helpful!!
Very helpful, you really deserve the name "professor". One question: where can I find a chart measurements like yours with inches, cm, French and English? thanks again :)
Wonderful guide. One of the best ones I have seen so far. I"m a beginner sewer and very much enjoying it. My issue is I don't fit the standard measurements.. My hips are wider than my chest, and my waist is higher up. I have a shorter torso. I wonder if there is any tweaking I can do with the measuring to get a better fit for me? I noticed when you measured the neck for the guy it looked like you where doing it for something like a business top where you have the button collar. If you where making sports wear would that measurement be valid?
It really depends on what you're making on which measurements are going to be the most valid. If you were making a business jacket, for example, then the most important measurement will be the chest circumference. Don't stress about fitting in standard measurements. That's usually the case for most people. The best advice I can give is to take accurate measurements, pick the most relevant measurements for choosing your size, dependent on the project, and then make a muslin. This means, buying cheap fabric, like muslin, basting together enough to be able to try the garment on, and then you'll be able to see where you need to take in/let out or make adjustments. So if you make a jacket and decide, it's too long, you'll be able to fold up the muslin, until you get the length that you want and then you shorten the actual pattern for when you make your garment with your nicer fabric.
Thank you. I have a plan of action. I have a Tee Shirt that more or less fits me, good enough to get some basic measurements from. This Tee Shirt it not great. For one its tight around the front of my neck. I believe one or the reasons for this is the back bodice was made too short, and maybe the depth of the front bodice neck line can be a tad deeper as well. Making a very basic sleeveless Mock top will really help me tune in a nice fit for me The only problem I see with this is. How will get get this mock on and off? As it will be made of non stretch material for more accurate measurements. Thank you greatly for your tips and suggestions.
Professor Pincushion hello professor, the one i'm having trouble with the most is finding the waist. i sew for myself and since i'm a guy, i don't need a fitted bodice or top so i don't need a dramatic curve at the waist. however, i sew and design for my mom and sisters and i'm having trouble with their waist. it seems every time i sew something like a knit dress or a woven dress, the location of the waist is very hard to find. i measure the height from the armpit seam (where the armhole meets the chest) to the waist, but whenever i sew something, it seems the waist line is always off. i hope you understand what i'm trying to say. because you didn't actually say it in this video. how do you measure the armpit to waist (where exactly?). hope you get to read this at least. :)
So wish I'd watched this before purchasing my first lot of sewing patterns for outfits :( Turns out even though US sizing is slightly different to UK sizing, I don't fit within the size chart for sewing clothes in the larger sizes, I just presumed I would be my store size or even one above. :( So frustrating, and not a good start.
Hello can you do a tutorial on how to find the back waist measurement by having the front waist measurement. I know you have to divide and do some fraction work, but can you do a tutorial please? Thank you.
I have a question: What are these sizes for? If I want to design and make my own clothing, do I have to start with pattern pieces that are already made? Because I see people who make clothing I see them cutting out templates. I just started learning how to sew and I started with drawing my own pieces to trace onto the fabric. Can someone teach me a little more about the basics? It would really be appreciated! Thanks!
Vania Jiang sizes are only if you want to work with commercial patterns. You can definitely make your own patterns but you usually have to take more involved measurements. In my experience, I find that it's good to at least start with some basic commercial patterns first before delving into pattern drafting. It's a good introduction into sewing and gets you familiar with what pieces look like. Then once you start getting into drafting things make sense a lot faster. We do have some full commercial pattern tutorials on our channel that takes you through the whole process that could be some good practice. On our website, we have a premium side, that includes tutorials on some basic pattern drafting. good luck!
You should first learn to sew you said you just started sewing you need to learn to crawl before you walk I would hate to see you trying to design something and it doesn't come out right and you become frustrated with it and then not want to sew anymore so my suggestion to you learn the basics of sewing like reading patterns what threads to use for what fabric the right needle for the job what the different types of materials and how to cut out patterns pinning them your markings there is a lot entailed I'm not trying to discourage you just trying to give you the heads-up . Start watching sewing videos join a sewing class online they have a lot of beginning tutorials so that you can kind of get an idea of what you want to do but I hope you get into it it's rewarding relaxing and most of all fun happy sewing
i always wondered why a pattern didnt fit in certain areas if they were bigger or smaller you explained that perfectly is there a video on makin the difference if your waist needs more then your inches in your waist and hip etc
yup, on our channel we have tutorials for adjusting patterns before you sew. we have bustline, waistline and hipline and show you how to increase or decrease.
wow so true we order princes dresses i use to look exactly what u sharing i am looking the biggest part of dress example if her body is around size 16 but the hips is bigger than 16 coz if i order 16she cant wear 16 so i choose 18,,some client telling me their 12 but actually if u take measurement exactly their size is 14 or 16,,,i told them u buy on store u can wear smaller coz u fit it specially stretch fabric but if u wear normal fabric u see ur real size
I have a large bust; however, the shoulders always comes out to large and the neckline is to large. How do I alter my pattern pieces? Also, how do I alter the facing pieces in order to coincide with the changes that I have made? Thank you for your excellent videos. I am learning so much.
Barbara Turner hello. Another person just asked this same question and this is what I suggest: I would choose a size according to your upper bust, so it's not your full bust but just above it. This should help with the shoulder area fitting better. On our channel, there's a tutorial for increasing the bustline using the pivot method. You can then use this to increase the bustline so it'll be the correct size but the shoulder area will remain the same. Hope this helps.
what if your waist size is not proportional to you hip size. My waste measurement is a size 10 but my hip size is 16. having a bigger butt makes it hard to follow patterns. Pants are always to large at the waist
We have tutorials on our channel for altering patterns. You can do decrease waist or increase hip. If you're making something like skirt or pants, I would do a size 16 to fit to your hips and then use our tutorial to decrease the waist size
Can you please address how to find your size on a pattern if you are large busted? When I've made a pattern according to my bust size it made everything else about 2 sizes too big :-(
Can you do a video showing us how to take a measurement of yourself and how to draw those measurements to draft that bodice and sloper. I still don't get it.
have you looked at our premium tutorials on our website? We have a tutorial showing how to draft a basic bodice and taking bodice measurements. They're pretty in-depth so this is just the front: www.professorpincushion.com/professorpincushion/full-bodice-block-pattern-front/ but we also have a tutorial for the back bodice. Thanks!
shiamyloveable are you still trying to determine your size after this tutorial? we have tutorials for cutting out your pattern: ruclips.net/video/F025v6FvGi4/видео.html and then how to arrange it on your fabric to cut it out: ruclips.net/video/lNjulZzkTL8/видео.html If you have specific questions that you get stuck on, you can use our ask a question forum on our website and upload an image of the step you're stuck at. I'll do my best to help you out.
yes, on our site as part of our premium membership, you can find a tutorial for the full bodice front and full bodice back. This is the link for the front. www.professorpincushion.com/professorpincushion/full-bodice-block-pattern-front/ Just realize you'll need to register on our site and upgrade the membership to premium to view the video.
im confused on the back of my pattern it says im a bunch of different sizes i have a 34'' bust a 28'' waist and a 34.5'' hip and it says my bust should be a size 12 my waist a 14 and my hip a 20 but i have no idea what number to go by and usually in shop sizes im a uk 6 - 8 it depends what do you think i am ?? thanks
I have a large bust and hips, but a small frame. It seems like when i make things to fit my bust measurement, they are way too big around my shoulders. How should I be choosing my size?
Nicole Mehelich I would choose a size according to your upper bust, so it's not your full bust but just above it. This should help with the shoulder area fitting better. On our channel, there's a tutorial for increasing the bustline using the pivot method. I am not sure what size to pick. My bust size is 32.5", waist is 33", hip is 34" back waist is 16". When i am using commercial pattern in size 10, the bust fits perfect, however the waist n hip dont fit me.
jackchang696 If you're making a dress, I would stick with the size 10 and alter the waist and hips. We have tutorials on our channel showing you how to increase/decrease waist and the same for hips. If you're doing pants or skirt, than choose a size based on the hips and alter the waist if need be. Most of us have to do some alteration. good luck!
Q. I have a son who is a large boy in regular clothes shirt size he is a 3x how would I find his size if it's not indicated in the chart pattern? I took his measurement but as I see in your video I did them wrong I took the neck and chest and stomach?and his chest and stomach were the same measurement. I would like to sew him some T-shirts,as a little boy I was sewing him summer outfits like shorts and tee-shirts. I did that for both of my son's the older one is petite he takes after me but my younger son takes after his dad who is a big guy, once they grew up I stopped sewing and now what to sew again for them and grandkids..... Please help Thanks
***** hmmm...what I would probably do is choose a pattern size based on his chest measurement and then alter the pattern to increase the waist area. we have a tutorial on our channel called Increase waist pattern alteration. You can try something similar and see if that fits better for him. Hope this helps
I have a question what if you're doing a jumpsuit and you fall in between sizes? And your bust is smaller and waist small but your hips are a bit bigger.. ? So for the jumpsuit which one should you look first for measurement? the bust or the hip?
+Sandrine kow how are the patterns set up? Is there a bodice and then a separate pants pattern that are eventually sewn together? If so, you can choose the bodice according to the bust and then the bottoms according to your hip. since your hip is for a larger size, you can use our decrease waist alteration to make the waistline smaller so that you'll be able to sew the two sections together easier
yeah they are two seperate! i wasn't sure if i was able to use 2 different sizes for it because i thought the attachment would be off or something. i didn't think tto alter the waistline! Thank you i'm going to try that!
Check out our tutorial on how to increase the bust in a commercial pattern. It's on our channel. Note, if you increase by more than 4" total, also check out the tutorial how to increase the sleeve width. Hope this helps. :)
thank you Professor :) . I have a little question.. I want to buy a dress from Aliexpress. It is said that *hipline = 88cm* on the information board.. My size is *L* and the other measurements fit me well ( Bust, Shoulder ) but my hipline is about 98cm :/ . is it possible that the dress whould fit me ?
Unfortunately they don't, The thing is that I've found other articles selling the same dress but on their information board, 88cm corresponds to waist, not to hipline ! :) It's ok , anyway, I will have just to look for an other ! :) Thank you very much for your time ^_^
how do you measure your abdomen area if you are a little over weight and have a ''muffin top''. i have a small waist, then a muffin top, then my hips are a little smaller. my clothes tends to always roll up because of this.
+Marilou Dery use the widest point below the waist as your hip measurement. In your case, it means that your "hip" measurement may be a little higher up. When making skirts or pants you can use that hip measurement to determine your size and then alter the waist for a smaller size. The distance then between your waist and hips may need to be shortened so it reflects your body. Definitely do a sample of the pattern in cheap fabric or muslin and just quickly baste the pieces together to check the fit and see if you need to make more changes.
+Professor Pincushion Thank you so much for your reply! Of all the instructions I've seen or read I've yet to have anyone tell me that crucial info. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you videos, you're a great teacher.

Glad it was helpful!
You can find them in the pattern lookbooks. If you go to a shop that sells patterns, they should have these lookbooks available to view.
Love your videos! Thanks for updating this one! :)
Thank you for your video.
you can buy lookbooks directly from the pattern companies on their website :)

I think the dressform was purchased on overstock.com
how do you measure your abdomen area if you are a little over weight and have a ''muffin top''. i have a small waist, then a muffin top, then my hips are a little smaller. my clothes tends to always roll up because of this.

Does this apply to plus size ? Let me know . Urgent
Naddy Maddox yes, taking your measurements would be the same. thanks! :)
Ok . Tqsm !
May I ask : Are you best to measure your bust size WITH or WITHOUT a bra on?
with a bra on. Whatever you plan on wearing under the finished garment, you should wear when taking your body measurements. :)
