Pads Catchers seem to be a second too late on steals, its due to the set up motions from catcher of Padres trainers needing to school the catchers to have the throwing hand next to the mit of having contact before pitch gets in. I notice this of every catcher Padres uses and their throwing hands not set up next to mit before pitch which is all they have to do over laying their throwing hand off to side of only setting up the contact once pitch or the ball is within the plate. Carlos Hernandez a former Padre Catcher had this technique , as well as many catchers at any level. Not sure why the Coaches not informing their present Cathers now? Ask any Coach of having a great catcher who sets up this method of throwing out base stealers and they would agree.
Throwing hand usually be right behind the web of the mit when there is a potential base stealer on base. Its a split second AHEAD of Padres has been a split second too late on 99% of these moments.

I don't know who you are referring to but it sounds as if he is better than most of the the pitchers that the Pads have and this game/business is all about winning, as long as he isn't a cancer in the clubhouse, I'd say go get him.
