    I literally watched four other videos on this where it took them 15 minutes of talking and overly convoluted explanations to not even properly explain how to do this or what it was.
    This guy did it in literally a minute and a half. Thank you.

    In the first example, when you came back on the first string, the first note will be upstroke...so different from the beginning. So what´s economy picking is?

      Yep, happened to me too and a lot of other people. Synyster Gates also naturally developed economy picking and has said Alternate picking isn’t his strong suit, feels less natural. The “tone” difference isn’t as significant as people say it is and you can form your own music around it.

    I'm an old school metal guitarist and I know that the shred community are big on economy picking. But did economy picking even exist in the early days of rock & metal ? In other words, did 70's & 80's rock and metal guitarist such as Richie Blackmore, Glen Tipton, KK Downing, Randy Rhoads, Rudolf Schenker, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith use this technique ? I'm going to guess that the answer is a hard No. And when you consider the multitudes of epic solos that were played using alternate picking, then I have to question, if alternate picking was good enough for them then why isn't it good enough for the rest of us ?

    I am a natural economy picker, but my teacher is forcing me through some alternate picking exercise, I have tried very hard to alternate pick, but I mess up with the notes because I am focussing more on my right (picking) hand as I have to watch my fingers that they are picking alternately strictly , However I can do economy picking easily and my brain does not have to focus on the notes I am playing.. What should I do, I basically don't like alternate picking , It feels like one feels when someone plays guitar while singing, i.e focussing on two things at a same time, pls suggest

      Simple, do what easy for you. If you don't like alternate you won't progress despite hours of practice. Also depends on what style of music you gonna play. If you're into fusion (Gambale-style) or a die hard Yngwie fan, economy will make you a champion.

      Find a new teacher for one... he should be flexible with your play style and that’s what I love about guitar is everyone has there own way. So many different styles or picks people use, different shapes, sizes, and some only use there thumb and fingers in an unconventional way but it works for them. And I’m the same as you being a natural economy picker, feels right and makes more sense to me too

      @@jordanfender3085 Exactly. A guitar teacher should introduce the concept of "alternate picking" (what we're really talking about here is outside string shifts), but--forcing it on a student? No. I came here to try to find an answer as to why I should bother with outside string shifts. I find them highly unnatural and slow. So what I've determined is that they are harder to learn and simply sound a bit different, and ... well, that's about it.

    Also, if you watch say, Guthrie Govan, Tom Quayle or Eric Johnson's right hands very carefully, you can often see where they might lightly use the second and possibly third fingers to pluck some of the notes, using not too much force, so that it balances in attack and volume with the pick, therefore eliminating twang from those notes, and making them sound picked too. Not only that, but during those super-fast picked-note passages, there can be some well-balanced hammer-ons and pull-offs that are maintained in a way so that they come across as sounding 'picked', depending on how hard they are hammered or pulled. Pat Metheny does some stuff like that too. Fairly tricky, but in the long run, makes playing really fast, much easier!

    As a newbie with a pick, I should only do alternate picking... right? I've been playing for 17 years and play a lot of difficult fingerstyle songs... so not a newbie on guitar... but for about 6 months now have been only playing with a pick and it has definitely elevated the game. It's interesting how crisp the notes are.. and fun. Okay enough run-on sentences... alternate picking only in the beginning?

    I remember looking up videos on how to alternate pick back when i was more of a beginner and after the video i had found, i kinda just messed with it and was like “why do i have to alternate pick anything what if i did what sweep picking players do and kinda just “sweep” thru the notes” and i found it was easier for my brain and fingers. I didn’t find out till later that thats the whole basis of economy picking lol

    I am an "older" player that has picked things back up after 25 years of not playing, and I still need to get alternate picking down. To me, it seems more "automatic". I think you are saying to try to learn both at the same time, even though you personally did not "get" economy picking until years later. If you HAD to choose one to learn and get down first, would it be alternate or economy?

    • @MusoraOfficial
      @MusoraOfficial  5 лет назад

      Personally I think working on alternate first is a good way to go. Jumping into eco once you have the basics of alternate down is great though.

    Actually alt picking + legato can solve the picking awkwardness in most songs. On the other hand, Eco picking is just a mini 2 or 3 string arpeggio. It comes in especially handy when playing some fast non 3-note-per-string set of notes because unlike alt picking, the way you pick will be all the same no matter where you start to pick. For slow stuffs, alt picking all the way if you want good control of dynamics at every note you pick. If you play smooth stuffs like Jazz, probably eco picking is more suitable for that tone.

    I learned some very basic stuff with all the teachers I had but they always said I was doing something wrong and they always asked for strict alternate picking. Seems my head and hands somehow developed economy picking without me knowing what that was and I've been doing it this way ever since.
    Should I ditch alternate in favor of economy?

    • @MusoraOfficial
      @MusoraOfficial  5 лет назад +1

      That's pretty cool. That's how eco picking creeped its way into my playing. I tried learning it intentionally with no luck. One day it creeped into my blues licks and I've been intentionally working on it here and there ever since.

  • @sigiligus

    People in the 80’s started practising strict alternate picking because of Yngwie, who is an economy player. You don’t need to alternate pick for the tone. Even among legendary players, people find it difficult to tell the difference if you have good dynamic control. That being said, it is much easier to make alternate picking sound metronomic, although the basics of playing fast with it is harder.
